One last step and we can bury the water pipes: this week we worked on opening the waterwell and checking whether the pump still works. I can't believe we will have such a cool water source on our farm! Episode #77.

Good work, there is still time to bury an extra "sleeve pipe" in that trench to use for power cable or low voltage wire in the future out to the street for doorbell, lights, electric drip system, or whatever. It's just too cheap not to run an extra 1" or preferably 2" sleeve of pvc after all that work digging and backfilling.

Bless your hearts! That plumbing maze to trace. All those valves, hoses, shutoffs and the digging, digging, digging! A man of many talents and strengths with the woman and supervisor (Annike) to help and keep the spirits up on what can only seem a never ending task.! Its going to be so beautiful!! And still, so many mysteries to be discovered there!🕊

The walls of your well are pretty, but you probably do NOT want sunlight getting down there, unless you want stuff to start growing in your well. However, if you're worried about having access to the well in future, I can suggest a method that's a lot less dusty than having to cut in every time: a two part lid. My parents' house has a cistern, the edge of which sticks up maybe 10-15 cm above ground level, and the lid is made in two parts. The first one is a cement cap that fits over the whole opening of the cistern, with a rim that keeps it from any kind of lateral motion if someone bumps into it with a car or something. However, set into the middle of that cap is a small PVC pipe with a screw cap, which can be opened for running a dipstick to test the depth or pouring a little water treatment in. For serious maintenance the heavy cover can still be lifted off, but most of the time all that's needed is to just open the small pipe. The whole thing sits close enough to ground level so it's not an eyesore, it pretty much just hides in the taller grass.

@ingridvandewege1547
@ingridvandewege1547 2 года назад

You show how much work has to be done just to make an old building structurally sound. Things that will never be seen but are the most important aspects of renovating. Would cost thousands of Euro's if you employed people to do the work ( llabour hours plus materials ). I admire you for taking on the work, even the cost of the required supplies would be expensive . Have watched you from the beginning and look forward to seeing you making your farm house a home. Also developing your courtyard and land into a garden.

I'm not that sure - if it's anything like my parents' well the cover would just have lifted off in two halves. Lifting it off completely would have required several people and straps I think but we managed to slide ours to the side quite easily. You can see the gap between the two halves in the video.

At least now you can find out the depth of the well, the amount of "flow" it has, the cleanliness of the water, replace the piping, and maybe add a pump in the well if it (the water quality) is good enough. Perhaps adding filtration will purify it enough for your needs. Good luck.

You can get a Masonary blade for a Circular saw and cut through that concrete quickly and cleanly... it is dusty and noisy...lol a Wet saw is a better tool..but in this instance..a simple tool can be used...i cut a shallow first cut..then drop deeper each cut till it cuts through....you might hit metal rebar as you cut..use a grinder to cut through those and continue till done..

Wow...an actual hand-dug, old-timey well. I'm not sure what I was expecting. I guess I was expecting this, but to actually see it, is crazy. Here in the US, most wells are no longer those old type, but wells drilled sown into the aquafer, with steel pipe casing and a submersible pump at the bottom of the casing, attached to a smaller plastic (or the like) water pipe. The pump is wired up through the casing. I think, typically, the pump feeds a pressurized tank on the surface (often in a basement), which maintains enough pressure to provide the water to the service points. The pump kicks on when a certain amount of water is used and/or the pressure drops too low in the tank. This is beneficial in that it reduces the constant cycling of the pump, extending the pump's lifespan. When pumps do go bad, the wellhead (which is typically under a cover, not buried under, is opened, the old pump pulled up and replaced back down the well. At least that's how I seemed to remember the arrangement when I lived in the country. What I don't remember is that we had any filter, as the water from the aquafer has already filtered down through the earth and was, in our case, surprisingly clean, pure water. I can see where open well water like yours would likely need some sort of filter, at the very least.
@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 2 года назад
Dug wells were common for a surprisingly long time in Europe, at least in areas with a relatively high water table. I think in the 50s they started using pre-cast concrete rings instead of brick, much faster to build and probably safer too (you add rings as you dig and they act as shoring). A few years ago I watched a Czech video of a family hand-digging a well in the RU-vid era! Dug wells are considered a bit old-fashioned these days though. Absolutely agree on the pressure tank, that's a necessity! DIY stores sell pumps with small built-in pressure tanks for watering gardens, for a whole house they're usually separate components.
@NickGreyden
@NickGreyden 2 года назад
You have the basics of wells drilled in the modern era. They can test the purity of the water and what contaminates are found in the wells relatively cheaply and quickly. This can let you know if you need a filter and if you need any cleaning agents. Filters are cheap, cleaning can be done as often as once a year to as little as once every ten years and costs anywhere from $250-$500 USD. I do know that now they are suggesting to get your water tested for wells once every 4-5 years in case the aquafer ecology changes, especially if there is any drilling, construction, or major landscape/ecology changes nearby.
