This movie was great from the very beginning. It starts off with some background and then goes right into the laughs about five minutes in. The characters are memorable, even the Swiss guard who helps pull off a brilliant yet simple scheme. Nanni Moretti does an excellent job directing, acting, and even writing. His character, the psychoanalyst, when not directly the cause of humor or interesting conversation is at least involved in quite a bit of those special moments that make the movie a joy. On the other end of the spectrum is Michel Piccoli’s depiction of a newly chosen, reluctant, and depressed Pope. Melville, the Pope, although delivering quite a few laughs himself is the main character who brings some drama into an otherwise light comedy. The middle of the film sees him discovering himself and start to grasp what’s truly wrong with him emotionally and why he feels like he shouldn’t be the Pope. The rest of the cast plays off the two characters quite beautifully making for a great ensemble of players that round out a nice story. The only two complaints I can make don’t necessarily ruin the movie at all, one of them is just a direction choice that many movie viewers aren’t used to. First is that the scenes in the middle, ones with the Pope, felt at times like they were dragging on. To go from humorous or surreal one moment to serious the next can be a bit jarring. However, the Pope’s moments do give the overall movie some breathing room between the scenes with the cardinals and Moretti’s character, so it’s not too bad, it’s just the tonal shift made the heavier scenes seem longer then they probably were. Second would be the ending. Being raised on Hollywood, which is the major source of movies for a lot of the world, people tend to expect a formulaic story, so when a movie deviates from the formula it can cause a bit of discomfort for the viewer. The ending definitely breaks away from tradition for this type of movie. I wouldn’t call it a happy or sad ending, it’s just unexpected and can feel like there’s a lack of resolution which may bother a number of the audience. So outside of a second act that may seem long and an atypical ending (which for some may be a good thing) this is an overall enjoyable movie, well worth the time to watch.
I've seen and is much better than "The King's Speech." But I doubt that Americans can enjoy a movie like this. It has a setting very special addition to catch him in full you must be familiar with the entire filmography of Moretti and the speech she has pursued for over thirty years.
Movie plot: "We need someone to lead us against GOD!" 'Whoever shall we get?' "Someone whom imposters good but is evil to falsify righteous!!!" "Someone whom will punish the righteous!" Producers: We have a waste of time and people's money!
@eatclamsbitch was not my intention to offend the Americans, I mean that it is a film style typically "European" atmosphere and away from the Dan Brown or Ron Howard. Moreover, the work of Moretti in the U.S. is not well known, why the film could not be adequately understood by those unfamiliar with poetry and style of this director
Peter Tran Sorrentino (one of the best movie director out there right now) is making an awesome tv-series, watch that. Obviously I don’t know yet weather this movie is worth it not the money (could be), however I aspect high things from my country’s directors, and this seems to be one more uneeded film.
The Holy Bible verses are true friends, remember the last day is here don't allow anyone to deceive you read the book of life and compare to what is happening today thanks
That thing is just a tail chaser (as I call them) where it says a bunch of shit that never goes anywhere and if you try to explain it you go "shit... what the fuck did I just read?"
The real selection to be a pope is totally difrrent ....lord will choose...and really2 hard proses to choose the pope ..to present st peter in this world
Well in our time the Heaveanly Father is mocked by some animated US commedian's in comparing to that mocking a st.Peter's Seat is nothing.Deterioration of faith going like this for what u need pope, for what Mary,Saints, take only Bible then o well that Bible is fishy be agnostic,atheist...and then finally when temptation limit man in materialistic sense, then that poor soul is ready to lose every hope or to hope in relativistic, materialistic world...
The findings - which include very high levels of phthalates in shoes and formaldehyde in a baby girl's dress - prove, according to Greenpeace Germany, SHEIN's careless attitude towards environmental and human health risks associated with the use of hazardous chemicals, in pursuit of profit.Nov 23, 2022
this movie doesn't fit to the catholic's out there ! and what in this world does the director thinking what will happen next , or what is the reaction people in the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH .
1) The Vatican City has a bank (Istituto Opere Religiose), one of the worst because it is not transparent and had lots of scandals in Italy for money laundering: Pope Francis doesn't like that bank, let's see what will happen. 2) Italian taxpayers pay indirectly billions of euros to the Roman Church, in different forms: the Italian State unfortunately is not willing to cut that privileges.
Do you know that Rome and all central Italy were part of the Papal State, and that the newly formed Italy invaded Rome in 1870 and seized their territories?
Car Po was that suppose to be an argument? This the thing with people, they believe they JUST discovered America! They don’t try to understand History or why... heed American Gobbo comment and stop being an ignorant.
