Interesting. Recently in my tests, I also find that the camera has A LOT of issue to AF especially when you have flowers or leaves around the subject, which can sometime be problematic. For those kind of shots, I just disable the subject detection all together to work around... but yeah, they really need to improve this. Get some engineers from other companies and get your AF system at the same level, that should not be such a big deal Fuji...

I really do hate when the fanboys say, “ you just don’t know how to set up the AF, you have the wrong settings “. Why do I need to dive deep into the menu and spend hours tweaking and experimenting on each setting? On my Canon, I put it in the mode I want and it works like 90% + of the time. I’ve never tweaked any AF setting on my canon r6

Well said. When I was using the fuji, I've to constantly put myself on high alert mode when shooting important events such as wedding and baptism. Because in the past, my fuji lost focus on important moments. It was very easy on a6000 made me felt like I was cheating (after switching from dslr) before I switched to fuji and it is also very easy on the R6 and R6II that I'm using now. Never the need to deep dive into menu to change AF settings for different scenario. They just work.

Totally agree with this. I've recently come back to photography and trialed a few systems before ultimately going with an X-H2. I like the camera, I like their colour science, and I just preferred it over the others I trialled. However, the Sony A7iv straight out the packet pretty much had telepathic AF. I did nothing other than stick it in eye tracking. It dared me to try and unstick it. It just wouldn't let go. The Fuji on the other hand has two issues: 1. As expertly demonstrated here, even though the box says it's locked on the face/eye, when you review the shot it's actually focused somewhere/something totally different. 2. Sometimes halfway through tracking, and with no reason, it drops the face and the box moves to (try) and focus on something that is definitely not a face, eye, or anything vaguely similar! Sort it out Fuji. I way prefer your cameras to Sony, but your AF game definitely needs improving!

I have had xh2s since release and it’s always been totally shit for photos. Images are always super soft from missing critical focus. I only use Fuji for video now as the original xh2s firmware seemed to be ok for video but now they are just expensive paper weights. Was contemplating a gfx100ii/xt5 combo for weddings but not now. Also under the same heat conditions my xt3s will record allgood but the xh2s will overheat.

I've felt the same way since I bought the XT5. I shoot a lot of weddings and couple sessions, and I realized that when objects move quickly, the result is a lot out of focus. I thought it was just a firmware issue, but after I updated it, it looks the same, no change I feel. I was surprised because the green box seemed to work fine on my camera's lcd. But the results after I checked on the computer were out of focus. Even when I took a picture where the object was not moving, it was still out of focus! Even though the green box looked in focus! I have noticed a similiar problem with my XH2S. AF feels spotty where I get the green box on the head or eyes. Instead of them being in focus, I get something completely different. Even for a brief moment during filming, the focus will jump to the background instead of the subject. Its a valid criticism. I don't expect Fuji to have Sony's or Canon's AF but it should be expected to do better than a 50% hit rate. If not firmware updates, then their next processor needs to vastly improve upon AF.

Glad this is finally getting some more attention. I bought the X-H2 early last year, and sold it after 3 months because the AF is nearly unusable if you want to capture any action. I respectfully disagree with this. You can refer to Edvard's video comparing the AF between a 10 years old Sony a6000 against Fuji XH2s. Even thought a6000 wasn't perfect in every situation, it performed significantly better than the XH2s that has much newer and advanced processor. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K0ub7poyQPA.html With Fuji, it was never the hardware, it was always the AF algorithmn, or to be more precised, their coder.
@blubravery
@blubravery 4 месяца назад
@apamacam4838 this is where you are incorrect. If it was software, it would have been corrected. Nikon had a more recent processor and it still didn't compare. The processor sucked. Nikon went back to the drawing board and created a whole new processor and whoever the engineers were, there were better engineers wren they created the next processor. Fuji just has bad engineers.

This was one of the issues why I switched from Fuji to the Nikon ZF. Yes I'm losing compactness and the aperture ring on the lenses but the Nikon's AF and Low Light performances perform way over Fuji. I've avoided the tracking mode since getting into Fuji because of all of that's been said on RU-vid. Therefore, I've never really tested it haha, but I can understand why it would be annoying, particularly if you need the eye tracking to work reliably. I shoot mostly sports/action photography and videography since getting the X-T4 a year ago. I always use single point or zone in continuous mode for photos and the hit rate has been great. For video, i use multi mostly because for surfing using F8 or higher means the depth of field ensures i never really have a problem with the autofocus. If the subjects are closer it's probably 50/50 between area and multi, depending on the aperture and light and it's been fine for me. Overall, I think you're good if you use single point or zone with the relevant AF mode (at least with my camera anyway). It would be nice if Fuji's tracking could be reliable (especially if the other brands are continuing to improve fast), but when it comes to sports photography, most RU-vid videos I've seen still recommend using the single point continuous anyway, even with a mirrorless Canon for example. Therefore, for my needs I'm really happy with it.

I don’t use the tracking often so maybe that’s why I don’t have these problems too often. I’m usually in AF-S/C using single point or zone. I think those work pretty well. I don’t wanna throw the whole AF under the bus, but it does need work. I don’t know the full specs of what the new generation processor is supposed to handle and can handle, but I do wish the updates came faster. Maybe they need to update the lens firmwares too when they’re rolling out new af algorithms.

It's sad that a video like this just gets someone like you removed from the pre-release testing program at Fuji. They don't know how to take constructive criticism or they just don't care. It seems the problem is that the R&D department at Fuji doesn't pay attention to what the community says if it's not about film simulations. They listen to the "we want Reala Ace!!!" whining rather than creating reliable autofocus. In the end, the film simulations only look like film to someone who has never seen the film stocks that they claim to "reproduce" and the autofocus should be the main feature of a camera. After all we can get our simulations in LR or C1 with presets and styles. The sad reality is that my manual focus hit rate is better than the tracking hit rate on the xt5. I did the same test with the XH2S and found that the results were only marginally better...40/65. I have an old Sony a73.... 55/65, that just hurts especially when you realize that the Sony is a FF sensor so the DOF is another complication for the AF. I am fortunate enough (or dumb enough, depends how you look at it) to own cameras from a bunch of different brands from Leica to Sony to Fuji and Olympus. I've made a good living with them all. It isn't until you use other brands that you realize how bad Fuji autofocus actually is. It's the lenses that keep that system in my cabinet. Amazing illustration of the problem though. They need someone like you on staff to vet the testing process or they'll get buried.

I am realistic and love almost every other thing except what the X-H2S hung it's hat on, AF. The Fuji apologists will attack you if you dare say anything to indicate that they aren't the best at anything. Quite ridiculous really. I try an R6MII with a crappy lens, no AF setup at all, and in the first few minutes everything was in perfect focus for moving targets. Fuji promises but continues to underdeliver. I am not brand loyal to anything at all and really did not want to leave Fuji, but they wouldn't fix what I wanted from a camera.

I absolutely love so much about Fuji cameras: their glass, the tactile feel, the colors including the log video, but I don't want to be a beta tester for their terrible firmware, and their video image stabilization is the worst in the industry and so is their autofocus. Still subjects? Great, no problems. But it's not feasible to use for sports, wildlife, pets, even pictures of your kids. And vlogging or FPV video? Need a gimbal. I very sadly left them for Lumix/Canon and was re-evaluating now a few years later, but nothing has changed. Now Lumix has Real Time LUTs, Canon has custom picture profiles that are basically LUTs, and even Sony has Picture Profiles which are much less user-friendly and a bit less flexible, but all three can get a certain "Film Sim" look SOOC. I actually have a custom Classic Neg look for JPEGs on both my Canon and Lumix cameras and it's awesome when I just want something nice and easy SOOC. And I get great image stabilization, autofocus, modern user interface, etc.

The canon r6ii is alien technology compares to the fuji autofocus system. One thing I like about fuji is that their camera and lens value does not go down much in value and selling is so easy. My xt3 with the 33 1.4 is actually a lot better and more accurate than the xh2. Slower af tracking, yes but the the accuracy is actually there and i am talking about af-c. Those fuji fanboys that say “just use af-s”, i might as well use my old 5dii. I paid a premium, i expect a premium experience. Fuji colors are freakin great but damn full frame cameras even at way lower megapixels resolve a lot better. Fuji with their crop is already at a disadvantage, add they crap af, oh boy. So sold off my Leica SL2 and 4 SL lenses. Will keep the Fuji but going Canon R5ii and the R1 when it drops. Sorry I left the 5DM4 yrs ago.

Waiting for Fuji fanboys to fly out now from their nests to sting us with the truth ! I did the same tests comparing X-S20 to Canon R8 and its worlds apart. Fuji can miss focus even if my kid is standing still. With Fuji I basically always revert to AF-C zone focus and do bursts to make sure at least one photo is in perfect focus. With Canon I don't need to do anything and it's hard to find a photo that is out of focus. That being said I added X-E4 with 27mm prime as it's where Fuji shines. Their small bodies and primes shine for fun street shooting.

the question i have people is why buy a fuji film, when you know sony and canon have better autofocus. This is not even something new, i know this, i have used sony and came back to Fuji because i have no issues if i miss a few shots, but the whole process and the colours straight out of camera from a GFX and even the XT is far superior to a Sony. The Sony might have better hit rate but they also miss. Sports photographers and fashion photographers in the early 90's amd early 2000's did fine with DSLR's which had no AI or advanced autofocus. So my question is do you want a computer or a camera. Understand you want Fuji to deliver a better autofocus system, but i dont see anyone giving sony grief about how boring their camera is and how bad their files are straight out of camera and how they render skin tones. I am not a fuji fan boy, but just get annoyed that people only focus on autofocus in photography. there is more to it than in photography, might be worthwhile looking at some real photographers work and the masters work, they captured images and told stories, not so worries on the capturing the right or left eye everytime.

I have x-t3 with 100-400 which was a big spend years ago and I got lots of great shots of birds of prey mostly not moving. Wanted more read so bought 150-600 this year but now I want birds in flight. Hesitantly trusted fuji with the x-t5 with bird subject detection, I already have the lenses. I was excited to see green box on birds eye flying around ... omg I can't wait to get home. Get home and it is all shit!!!!! Over and over technique, settings watching other reviews, back out and then same garbage. The 40 mega pixel sensor I find noisy when it gets even a little dusk like in wildlife, I'm not happy with the sensor or is it the focus...fffff I don't know anymore. Completely agreed with you. From all Fuji defenders you will hear that you have to change settings, you are using wrong lens, you have to switch this and change that... NO, we all have to admit that their AF is completely messed up... I have 3 FUJI camera bodies but I am not using them professionally fortunately. X-S10 AF is a shit, xt3 is ok for photos, X-s20 better but we have 2024 and those new cameras should have no issues, especially after last upades... but I am scared to update my X-S20 because of last fuji update which cempletely destroyed AFC and tracking in X-h2s and X-H2. It is just crazy because they did not even say anything about fixing it on last summit. It seems like fuji doesn't even care about camera users who already bought their products... just releasing tons of new cameras with shitty AF... for what? For who? Fuji should stop releasing and start fixing...

OK this channel got good points with the s9 but is now turning another drama so let papa faige lay it out to you and everyone who just complains. 1. Fujifilm, sony, panasonic, nikon all knows their issues but they will not address their shortcomings. They will fix and sell it in another camera as a feature so all these whining is pointless and just adds discourse. 2. If you want braindead AF just go with the Sony, S5ii or nikon. Fuji's AF is so bad try shooting it below your face and its AF will focus on the nose despite the box being on the eyes. 3. Know your darn camera, just because the AF is bad doesnt mean you cant do magic with it. These opinion hitpieces is honestly TRASH because you are focusing on what does not work instead of trying to find out HOW to make it work. Thats the GOLD content, when you can tell folks oh hey you know camera sucks at this but I can drive this baby see? All these brand manufacturer knows! Note that the X-H2S has better AF performance than all the 40MP cameras of the same generation, because of the faster sensor readout speed. The X-H2S calculates the focus more times per second than the X-H2 (and probably the X-T5).

It seems gets into balancing internal camera resources which they can only fix. I almost think it’s something like the resources/footprint of running that great looking back display is leeching resources from the AF. Probably something where Fujifilm would have to decide to take a different PR hit drop the resolution the back display or elsewhere to allocate adequate resources/memory to the AF. It just seems like the cameras that are good at AF have less than stellar back displays, but it’s just a guess on my part.

The fact that Panasonic, who just woke up and tarted using phase detect in their most recent models, but can do it better it's obvious, Fujifilm is milking this cash cow and not investing in decent software engineers. The Fujifilm "in focus" green box just lies. I spent most of a year trying to make Fuji work for wildlife photography. Despite having excellent Animal Subject Detection and Animal Eye detection (i.e. the system can display that it's tracking the right subject and the right part of the subject), in focus hit rates were so abysmal. I ended up selling my whole setup (X-H2S, X-T5, 150-600, and all the new model lenses) to move to Canon. I would move back to Fujifilm in a heartbeat if I thought the platform were workable. I just couldn't take waiting for literal hours to get a clean shot of bird and then have the focus system tell me I had an "in focus" shot, only to get back to LR and find that it isn't true :(

Very interesting video, thanks for all the tests and sharing. I’ve been a Fuji user since X-T2, and currently use X-T5 as my go to photography gear. Mostly like to do street and environmental portraits for hobby, but also use it for taking shots of my toddlers. I really love the tactile aspect of Fuji cameras, it feels much more engaging than when I was using other brands back in the days. I personally haven’t had much issue with hit rates (even with my kids running around), but I’m also not doing that long of a continuous auto focus shots. I just go for the eye detect with short bursts if they are stationary, or AFC with lower Aperture (say F2.8 vs. 1.4) with face detect if they are running around. But yes, I don’t rely on it if AF accuracy and dependability is a priority, which is what I desire when shooting video. For that, I’ve been using the Sony ZV-E1, and it’s been a great addition. I also use Leica M6 and MP for shooting film when I really want to slow things down and also long for that genuine film look. I think at the end of the day, it’s a function of what your use case is, and finding the most suitable gear for it.

First of all, I get a hit rate for you of 51.1% - still crappy. Second of all, the consistent results tell me that the AF-C mode is irrelevant when subject detection is doing its thing. I think the way Fuji explains it in the manual is that, when and if the subject cannot be identified, it defaults back to whatever the AF-C setting was (single-point, multi, wide-area, and whatever mode). It one sense, you prove that it works - it kept seeing your wife and trying to track her. In another sense, you proved why we shouldn't rely on it - it only nails it 50% of the time. Other websites like RTings show that XT5/XH2S for example are actually pretty close to cameras like the new Nikon Zf or Canon R6ii. Whether or not you agree with their methodology, it is at least a repeatable test. They do not test, however, subject detection modes, from what I can tell - just AF-C tracking or center point. Wide tracking is basically subject detection, however, and I wish Fuji gave us more control over it - the ability to set the focus box size or shape for example. Anyway I am not defending Fuji - as the prices go up, the performance needs to match the price. But sorry - you are out to lunch if you think the bodies or lenses don't matter. Of course they do. My 16-55 face detection sucks - it is accurate, but it does not turn on much. The 23 LM WR finds faces and tracks them way better. Just still worse than Sony, apparently, lol.

if another brand starts making non-pasm cameras a better modeless flexible system like Fuji I will switch. Ever since destroying the X-H1 form factor witht he X-H2S, they been only giving dial users leftover scraps form their PASM cameras that are inferior to other brands anyways. I'm thinking of possibly switching to the sony FX3 because if has a similar "Flexible exposure mode" which lets you do things smartly and directly instead of the subpar pasm workflow. Another company should be innovating in the workflow space right now to steal Fuji's customers. Because even though Fuji's direct auto/manual dial adjustments are superior, they don't make then fast and ergonomic like they could be. If they wanted more markwet share, just competing with autofocus alone would have kept them strong financially.

Those who are hard core fuji fans and of course naturally they will ignore and bypass this issue and 2nd those who really didn`t try any other camera system so they don` t know the AF benchmark for most companies. there is also those who don`t need much AF so they will be forgiving. At the end of the day, I bet if all fuji shooters will try canon or sony and see what AF should be like, many will probably leave Fuji. Its really a shame. I have refused to buy into the hype about improvements in this respect since the X-T3 (I still use the X-T1 and X-T2) and have been waiting - and waiting - and waiting - for Fuji to get its shit together in the AF-C department! The problem has persisted for so long now that I honestly feel that it must be related to an attitudinal or competence issue with the person responsible for this aspect of their camera development. There is zero room for any other explanation given that all other brands have reached superior performance levels here. Unless....it is possibly something as fundamental as being related in some way to the sensor design itself? Weird to even contemplate that I know, but remember, no other popular brand utilises a non-Bayer sensor. Just saying..... For me, I have lost confidence in Fuji's ability to rectify this situation without doing something radical and so, several years ago, I went down the Sony route for anything more demanding (my passion is shooting aircraft and I practice by shooting BIF :) )

I've got a crazy setting for focusing on people on my X-H2 that works for me. 1. I always leave Subject Detection OFF, as if it didn't exist! 2. Focus mode: AF-C 3. Sutter AF > AF-C: OFF -> This disables focus when the shutter button is pressed halfway. 4. AF Mode: Spot, the biggest If the subject doesn't move much, or moves parallel to the camera, I use BBF (Back Button Focus) by pressing once with my thumb, releasing, recompose and shoot. It's like shooting AF-S in AF-C mode. But here is the trick. If the subject suddenly moves closer or further away from the camera, I aim the focus point at the person's face and keep the 'AF ON' button pressed for continuous AF while taking a shots. If the subject is moving very quickly, I do the same as above but change the AF mode to Zone (the big square). If a person is zigzagging towards the camera, which doesn't happen very often, I move the camera to keep the person in the centre of the frame! Often I can anticipate where in the frame I want to place the person, so I move the focus point to that area using the D-pad. With this setup, if a photo is out of focus, it's my fault, not the camera's.

I can confirm that with previous f/w iterations and favourable glass, an average hit rate of around 70-75% for z axis targets on the XH2S. Your findings here cement further evidence that the most recent f/w release from Fujifilm has SIGNIFICANTLY broken the AF reliability under a plethora of situations (regardless of lens used). XH2S at 6.00, XH2 at 4.0 and XT5 at 3.01 are all suffering consistent reported AF failings. It's one thing for Fuji to balls up momentarily, it's quite another to stay quiet on the matter, allow more users to 'upgrade' their cameras and further nuke their tech. FUJIFILM, PULL DOWN THIS F/W, PATCH IMMEDIATELY. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
