I got called to tow a BLM fire service pickup off the Camp Creek Fire after it had electrical troubles and died at base camp. So I took the rollback out and headed into the Ochoco Mountains towards the fire. After getting there and getting the truck loaded up I learned that this is a very special truck named Natalie, so when making up the invoice and put "Natalie" in the vehicle description to see if it would clear the payables department!
Be sure to check out our Patreon project where we use whatever it brings in in a month as our budget to help someone the following month! I was never a fan of the Patreon idea until I realized that I can use it to help others instead of myself, so I created the Patreon Project where we can all combine our efforts to make a real difference in people's lives and make the world a better place! For as little as a dollar a month you can join the group of awesome people already on board and be vote to help steer the ship along the way!

Take a 3 axel truck on a tow that could have been done with a regular tow car ? Maybe you get to charge US the public more for that truck? Oregon what else could you expect.
@CaseyLaDelle
@CaseyLaDelle 2 месяца назад
You mean the three axle truck that unloaded the pickup and went straight back out to tow a 25k pound type four fire engine without having to bill for the two hour trip back to the yard to switch trucks, therefore making the bill CHEAPER than if I brought my light duty truck out first?? But all of that is irrelevant since it is now weeks later and none of the invoices for the many BLM and Forest Service tows/recoveries have been paid, and likely won't be for quite a few months. So yeah, can you tell me again how I'm screwing over the government??

So he should have driven out there with a rig that might have been able to do the job, based on the info he had, instead of taking the rig he knew could do the job? Is that what you would do? You’d be the one tow operator that wouldn’t send the roll-back?

For how much Oregon taxes its people and businesses, I am cool with an average business owner charging a little more to get their tax dollars back. Also before you yap about Government contracts and procurement of needs you should take a class on guess what, Government Procurement. The government has to be "equitable" and stuff like that. They may hire a company to do a contract strictly because its woman owned, veteran owned or minority owned. The quality could be complete crap but as long as its equitable.... great example is this HVAC filter that is used in certain places in the military. We would pay anywhere from 250-300 dollars a FILTER (something like an 8 by12") . I could go down to Home Depot and buy a larger generic filter for 25 bucks and make 3 filters.......

All 4WD pickups have recovery hooks from the factory. Even some 2WD pickups have them depending on models. I had 2006 Chevy 2WD that had recovery hooks. That truck has an aftermarket bumper, so they were removed.

Thanks for explaining the fire control tactics used in your area. I used to fight wildfire in the Missouri Ozarks - different conditions, different terrain, therefore different tactics. Most of the time the fire was in the deep ground litter and brush in fairly dense, mostly oak forest. We could usually stop it using three person ground crews. First a guy with a backpack blower created an initial line. Two guys walking with the blower used spring rakes to dress up and widen that line and start backfires on the inside (toward the main fire) of that line. When the main fire reached the area, the available fuel was already burned, so the fire was stopped. On larger jobs, the state agency sent in a 'tractor plow' which was a small dozer on tracks with a stout plow mounted to the rear. Those could plow a line much faster than we could walk. Our ground teams would follow with spring rakes dressing up that line and starting backfires.

God Bless you for your contribution to helping with the fires 🔥. Moving broken equipment for repair is critical to keeping all fire fighting resources available and engaged. The “pinned comment” has no idea how things work with wildlands fire fighting and equipment and how a professional like yourself brings the right tools to the job - in this case towing a 4 wheel drive diesel truck is best done on the rollback vs using your small tow truck and having to pull the drive line - a much quicker load for quicker turn around and safer for the equipment being towed!!!!

The PNW is on fire (again) this year - prayers to all the people involved on every level. No matter how small someone may feel their contribution is, it does, and it's appreciated, and without people like you going and doing what you do, their jobs would be harder. The lessons on fire breaks are always good to know - people need to better understand just how hard these crews are working.

Different road but I read that and immediatlely thought of Camp Creek Road in CA. That's where the deadliest wildfire in CA history started, the Camp Fire back in 18. It started at the top of Camp Creek Rd under some power lines. It then blew down the Feather River Canyon with the Diablo winds and right into Paradise which had 1 way in and 1 way out. Killed 85 people and was in the town before they could evac. It also mowed through Concow and several other towns and interestingly enough is literally a few miles from where the Park Fire is currently burning. That road name is jinxed.

Great video, Casey. Gives viewers a look of how forest fires are from the staging area and the logistics of how crews need backup. Met a man once. I’m always interested in the firefighting videos. A few years ago while our son was attending WOU, he was employed by Miller Timber Services in Philomath and spent his summers wild land firefighting. Hard, dirty work which he enjoyed very much. He was sent to California, Montana, Washington, Alaska, Tennessee and Nebraska. The year they went to Nebraska it was contained by the time they arrived so the crew headed back to Oregon. I have much respect for the work these crews do.

No different that the service guys on the Hwy. history will provide the most common failures and parts to carry on the truck. No to mention, a quick hack might get the truck operational again. When I was much younger I had a job that included wildland fire fighting during the summer, in true northern California. Boy, do I have some stories. It wasn't full time, like the professionals. It was part of my job, but we'd get called up to help out, or would be first on the scene if there was a fire near us, then would switch to being helpers when the pros arrived. Spent a lot of time mopping up, which was tedious. The fire fighting was the exciting stuff. My crews job was to cut line. Proud to say we were pretty good and never had a fire jump our line. Got into some scary situations though. Had some bad things happen to other crews and was glad that we were spared. Our crew got caught in the path of one of those retardant dumps once. Luckily it was not a full hit, but even a little bit of that stuff is not something you want to have on you.

Hey Casey, any chance you could do a video just on your experiences doing fire lines & water trucks? I'd love to here about your experiences and what it is like doing that kind of work. I've seen/watched plenty of videos on what it's like as the "Hot Shots" and the fire fighters, but I've never heard from the side of the guys/gals on the dozers, I think it would be cool to learn/hear that side of it.

I have pretty much zero photos or video from back then, so it would basically just be me talking shit for 30 minutes about what a joke calfire is and how they have no interest in actually putting out large fires.

@CaseyLaDelle I mean, I'd watch that video, but I could also see that it might not be everyone else's type of video. Maybe the next time you have to go rescue/tow another firetruck/wildfire truck, you could talk a little more about what it's like cutting dirt lines for fires or running the water trucks.

It's funny Casey you showed getting a snow cat and talking about all the controlled burn, well they just showed on the news where's the Pacific tree asson don't hold to the name but there start on California like Mount Shasta doing this mower machine then coming back and do a burn to clean up some of this. We have neglected our Forrest for the last 40 years and now it a tender box. The Indians did a great job on the early years keeping it controlled..
