We're Ginger & Greg. Full-time digital nomads, currently working on our dream DIY Expedition Vehicle Build! Too often, RU-vidrs glamorize VanLife and the process of a DIY expedition vehicle build or van build. In this video, we hit a rough patch and open up about some of the setbacks we've suffered during our DIY off grid camper build.

Well the final version came out fantastic and I like how the texture offsets it from the ambulance proper.

I appreciate your reality approach. I am in the process of resto-modding an old truck camper. It's not fun, sometimes...its def not pretty, sometimes. You guys rock!! Keep moving forward.❤

Glue works great on wood floors, while vinyl sheeting bubbles and cracks .....see VanCity VanLife old vinyl flooring results.

If you're gonna paint and you want it to be smooth go with spray paint. Apply a coat let it dry then get a piece of fine grit sand paper, spray the surface with water and lightly sand it smooth. After 2 or 3 coats and sanding then spray on your clear coat. Then sand again. Should come out looking like vehicle paint.

Its way too late but the gaps in the floor are from unstable climate control, if the temp drops below installation temp the flooring makes gaps, if it rises above installation temperature it buckles.

A late comment but as a flooring professional it looks to me like a installation related problem. I'm guessing it's a drop lock on that vinyl plank flooring with some kind of friction fit. If the planks are too close together when the next plank is dropped down the edge will crack like that. Having said that, of course this is a diagnosis from afar, and I think a single piece floor covering is probably better in this application anyways

Wouldn't it have been possible to glue planks together so they wouldn't separate?

Oh wow, one thing after another! I admire your tenacity. My heart was hurting for you two. The end results look great.

Is it vinyl laminate? Or wood? I’ve watched a lot of build channels like this , and every time when the builder uses a lot of wood and home looking materials , it never seems to hold up. I believe you don’t want an interlocking floor . You need one piece vinyl floor Edit - after I post it apparently you recieved this advice. Apply the concept of why a one piece flexible floor is needed to everything you build , ask “will this rattle apart?” Cabinets and walls need to be bolted. Not screwed or nailed , and they need to be made of flexible materials. It may seem flimsy even but it’s ability to flex is what will make it hold up. Wood with screws or nails will fall apart very fast.

Solid move on the flooring, I installed the same Lowe's floor material in my trailer build and its easy to clean and feels good under foot. The textured finish looks really good on the back as well. I really enjoy watching your videos, I also want to do a 4x4 ambulance build in the next year or so, they're hard to find.

Yes, the 4x4's are very rare. We found ours on expeditionportal.com

Loving your build. I know it’s yours and so I appreciate you worrying about the paint. But the final coat looked like magic and I’d love it if mine looked like that.

Hang in there, we feel your pain. We redid so much on our van and we are in the process of more changes right now. Are you planning and going back to LB? We will be going down just not sure yet of when. I played in my first pickleball tournament and it went as well as your paint job 😟

OMG a tournament?!?! That's so much fun! We haven't played since March 😭. I don't think we're going back to LB but honestly anything is possible! Would love to see you guys again.

I gotta disagree with you. Naturally it’s your build but I LOVE the textured look. I am not a fan of gloss so bravo on the matte finish. It came out phenomenal looking. I know it wasn’t what you envisioned though and for that I’m truly sorry for you both. But from my perspectives to beautiful!

Better look out. My wife is pressuring about spending. We make a good amount of money a month. I am thinking of divorcing her ass over $2000. So you better talk cuz it can get nasty.
