We are between the cellos and the violins. We know how you sound, how you play. We often were once you, before we chose our paths. We live in the liminal spaces, supporting you, driving you forward as the cellos do for us. We thicken your sound and make your chords complex. We blend your character with the lower strings, make your high mix with their low, and we take our jobs seriously. But most of all, we are the cushion you stab with pins and needles to make yourselves feel better when you fail. We are the scorned, the hated, the shamed. We are the butt of your jokes, the ones you disparage and mock. We exist in your shadows. We live on your leftovers. We watch. We wait. We know you, how you think and how you play, but do you know us?
I love how there were multiple times throughout the video Eddy thought he was being so clever, when in fact he was just exposing every violin-specific quirk he could on speedrun
@@eleanortan4816 I'm not the best violist so I wanted others to speak up first but: bow not weighty enough (what gave Brett away too) so the tone sounds wispy rather than layered and chonky, note attack for same reason, vibrato speed, which strings and notes are getting emphasized (violins whale on their top strings in higher positions, violas lean in heavy on our bottom strings), how shifts are attacked, how free you are / aren't with the melody, etc. I actually love Prelude 1 on viola (judge away) but Eddy's style was something only a violinist would come up with and I just went "No. NO" aloud in like the first second bwahaha
@@eleanortan4816 Violas aren't built "acoustically perfectly" like violins, so violins ring out naturally a lot more. Violas have to dig in and work the tone differently. It gives a delicious, intricate sound, but you do different things to bring it out.
@@eleanortan4816 I don't even play these instruments but at 2:02-2:04 and 2:24-2:27 the register is REALLY high while everyone else playing that same part didn't even sound anywhere as high as they did
9:51 it definitely sounds like a violinist playing the viola since the sound sounds a bit ‘shallow’ and not focused enough, and also the vibrato is too narrow and quick for a violist.
I was finally able to afford a violin today after 16 years of wanting to play, watching your content for the past few years, and in a way, living through you. I am looking forward to starting to play so much!
Han Oh is my school’s string orchestra conductor! Thank you TSV for bringing him into your video! Thank you Mr Oh for the 3rd place we got in SCL Vienna!!!
I have 2 kids, oldest plays the viola, youngest plays the violin. Oldest didn’t like the sound of the violin when choosing her instrument and youngest didn’t want to play the same instrument as the oldest.
I love twosetviolin videos. Can't get enough. After hearing a lot of viola jokes, i get to hear how viola really sounds. Love this video cos it showcases how violas can sound beautiful in pieces meant for them and when violists take pride in playing their instrument well. Love this game as brett and esp eddy try to act like violists. Great acting. Hope viola gang will be more positive about brett and eddy. Jokes about viola existed since history. Don't hold it against them. Dads just enjoys making us laugh with jokes.
@@LISZT- Indeed, but because the viola was not proportionately correct as violins and cellos so violas aren’t as projecting well as they do, and being convenient to play. Therefore, people make fun of it
Day 3 of asking for TwoSet collab with Ballet Reign If you have not heard or Ballet Reign, I highly recommend checking out their channel, especially if you’re into ballet or ballet music. They’ve got a video reacting to twoset’s ballet video.
Let’s take a second to appreciate all of the violist’s amazing tone quality!!! Everyone here had really nice sound production, projection, and bow portioning
Yo i've been watching 2set and just watch their suffering with Prodigy Chloe, and suddenly see this newly released! Feel good to catch up once in a while lol.
As overplayed as the piece was Eddy played, I'll admit it's my favorite piece to play on viola. I'm not surprised at the other violist's reactions, though, especially with how Eddy played it.
I’m impressed they were reading in the alto clef which is different from the treble clef that violin music is written in. And the spaces between the notes are bigger on the viola neck.
This reminds me of my very brief stint in my secondary school orchestra as a very bad violist, and one of my classmates was a violinist forcibly turned violist. The orchestra teacher said there were too many violinists so she just gave him one of those school violas and told her to figure it out.
I Learnt Violin for 1 year then knew for sure I would suck in it. So I decided to go all in for Piano (been playing for ~15 years now). Now look at my channel's name. What a life to lead lol.
