Have to say i'm really impressed with how the eyeball shot turned out. I thought the first cut of it looked a little rough, something about the eye model was twigging my brain, not sure exactly what. But the combination of the blood obscuring the eye a little and the camera focus adjustment really helped sell the scene. That final arm break shot was also so bloody smooth. So kudos to the directors for giving you guys the feedback to take your great first drafts and turn them into something amazing. Mad props to you both for these shots, and congratulations on landing the gig to do them in the first place.

@MrRezRising

Hi! Anatomy nerd here. The eye shot: I would have liked to see the optic nerve represented alongside the occular muscles. It's the little things, ya know. The arm shot: Loved the fingers wiggling, but all those muscles attact on the large bone above the elbow, and if you hyperextended to that degree, those little piggies simply wouldn't wiggle. It looked weird to me (brilliantly done and VERY visceral, highly entertaining). Hitchcock got mail from opthamologists after Psycho released bc Janet Leigh was clearly - to them - still alive in the tub death closeup; her pupils weren't dialated. So they used drops of belladonna in future films.
@Penguin-1966
@Penguin-1966 Год назад
the fingers not being able to move makes sense, though they probably would still make them move since it gives more realism to the idea that the whole arm section isnt a dummy and is actually his arm
@MrRezRising

@@Penguin-1966 Absolutely.
@cobalticsea5037

Something else that looked off about the arm shot. When a joint hyperextends, your reaction is usually to bend toward it in order to relieve this stress but in the shot with the clown, it bends away. There’s also no way the actor would have the leverage to break the arm with both hands on the wrist/forearm. I think if they showed one arm on the upper bicep and the other on the wrist it would be much more believable and explain why the clown moves the way it does
@markburke1396
@markburke1396 Год назад
I can't help but think that in the arm bend, there could've been some evidence of a bone breaking the skin, like something poking the cloths to really add to it. The way the arm bends just doesn't convince me enough. but super cool to have 2 shots in a movie though! congrats.
@helenl3193
@helenl3193 Год назад
Yeah, if I'm looking for niggling detail that would be it for me. It looks like a prop arm, if you look at the break-point, not the hand or the actors faces. But I think in the moment, as part of the scene/film, that's not going to be your main focus so we (or at least I) wouldn't notice it because my attention would be pulled to the hand moving and the faces. As Niko said, that sells it as not your standard arm breaking trick.
@ThePandaSupreme
@ThePandaSupreme Год назад
Ya I don’t want to sound like I’m hating but it just looks like a fake arm to me but the effect of transition is super nice
@Sequalsgoon
@Sequalsgoon Год назад
Agreed, it looks like a floppy tube of foam. I know Niko was attempting full realism without CGI, but... I think a rubber prop arm with a couple wooden dowels run through the middle of it would have given it substance, resistance for the actor and an actual 'crack' in terms of sound and movement that was noticeable in camera. Even through a jacket, this would have incredibly made it look like... An arm instead of a foam noodle.
@Yoarashi
@Yoarashi Год назад
I think the clown costume looks just puffy enough to hide an obvious bone poke. Plus from the clown's reaction it's clearly meant to be a bit of a comedic beat, which I think adds further leeway

Great job on the shots. It does jump out at me that the clown shot breaks physics. Without anything pinning him against the wall, his body would rotate around the corner, like Matt's does at 2:00. While you edited that out to make the shot work, I think it lost some impact because it looks like his arm was never even connected to his body.

Hmm while it's absolutely cool that you guys got to do an actual VFX shot for a movie, goes to show how far you've come I do think the "elbow break" was a bit... weak? It just felt like that Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets kinda jelly like arm, just bending around the pole instead of an actual break. Not sure what the rating on the movie was so I can understand why it would be less visceral but idk, that's my "critique", if you can even call it that. Still proud of y'all for making it this far.

@@QuincyKane The right sound effect will go a long way to make this much more gruesome. Correct. And if you're using the same trick for a horror movie you'll of course add some blood and maybe the end of a bone sticking out to the broken arm. :D The idea itself is totally legit and can be built upon.
@gambello1195

The effect was spot on, the clothes contain the broken bone so it looks as wobbly as it should. The sound effect on the other hand couldve been a more poppy one. And maybe removing one frame from the moment of it breaking.

The fingers wiggling kind of blow it. I mean, maybe one stretch of the hand, or some twitching. But the finger wiggling seems obvious. If you snap the elbow at 90 degrees and hold it like that, I'm not sure how you have the control to move your fingers like that. Muscles, nerves, ligaments, they're all now tight against the bone at 90 degree angle. Still though, the shot itself is pretty sweet. I bet for a long time people who don't know any better will still just say "oh it's just a CGI arm."

I've handled pig eyes before, they are pretty tough and rubbery. And it takes quite a bit of force to rip an eye out of the socket. Personally I would have made the eye bulge out, then have the skewer come through with a gush of blood. But to each their own.
@yiklongtay6029
@yiklongtay6029 Год назад
Unfortunately, everyobody has a different expectation of how an eye is supposed to look like. I think the blood spray hides some of the finer details and perfectly nullifies any sort of jarring impressions we would have. Iy made us all go at the very least "meh, it's kind of good".
@garethhughes7430

That was a strange choice. But then again an eye probably wouldn't behave like that since it isn't just floating freely inside the eye socket like this makes it seem. I don't think it was a problem with the effect itself. It was the choice made by the directors to have this happen in the first place. Frankly I thought the blood coming out was both unrealistic while also not going far enough. The way it kind of sputtered out like a blocked up garden hose was an odd choice. If you're going to do it either go big or go home.
@Covenant-R

I feel the movement of the clown during the arm break doesn't quite match. Before the snap, he's fairly perpendicular to the pillar and after the snap, his back is flat against the pillar and there was nothing holding him back to create enough force on the arm to snap it. The clown would just rotate around the corner because there's nothing stopping him.

I see everyone is praising the arm-breaking shot, and I do like the general idea, but... am I the only one seeing the huge problem with how it was executed in both the CC and movie shot? The shot just doesn't make sense in terms of physics. Specifically, the person having their arm broken should not have any reason to be "stuck" onto the wall/beam like that, considering the various forces working against them. In the movie, for example, Scott's character is whacking the arm multiple times on that corner, with his entire focus on that arm. But after the wipe, the victim's whole body looks as if something just pushed them hard with their back against the wall - when nothing really did. It just doesn't make sense. To me it looks like a cut even though it's just a wipe. I think it would've been far better, for example, to have the MC somehow pin the victim on the wall (let's say, with his right hand), and do the breaking motion with just the left hand. This way, it would make sense why the victim is pushed against the wall like that.

Not only it's great to see you involved as sort of specialists/experts in professional cinema stuff, but also amazing to be able to observe the behind the scenes of this process! (like - the studio isn't ashamed of working with 'some RU-vidrs' ;))
@uosdwiSrdewoH
@uosdwiSrdewoH Год назад
I don't know how big the studio actually is. It's a direct to digital movie with most likely a very small budget. The directors themselves have their own RU-vid channel. Before this they were working at places like ILM. They're just VFX guys, same as Corridor.

Would have been an amazing Halloween special where we follow a camera through the Corridor Crew building and every member we meet dies horrifically in an accident to end with with Scott Adkins on the couch laughing and reminding us to watch Accident Man.

My one thing with the eye skewer shot is the skewer and the eye are in much higher detail and focus than the rest of the shot, making it quite noticable, i find the jiggly physics you chose weird but different than most other things so it works kinda well

My only criticism of the final effect is that in the final shot, the clown slams back into the wall with nothing pushing him into it, while his arm is pulled in the other direction. He should jerk forward not back. But that's not on corridor's effect, so much as the directing/acting. The clown either needed to have been already further back against the wall so he had some room to move forward, or have something else push him back against the wall simultaneously to the arm break.

The eye shot looks good 👍 but the hand break looks terrible. It seems like the clown is helping him break his hand by hitting himself against the wall (not a normal move). The hand looks like it is being extended bented instead of breaking (dimension don't add up no sharp edges at breaking point). Sorry

How does the financing of something like this work? Does the studio time for making the shot get paid for by the movie. How do you negotiate the payment? Is paying for the shot expected by the movie producers?
