Hello, Lovelies! Today I'm sharing the next episode in my Messy To Minimal series! And it's a goooood one. Come along with me (and my hubby!) as we tackle the biggest mess in this series- our GARAGE! I hope you enjoy this before and after!
Minimalism to our family means each item in our home has a purpose and gets used regularly. It's less about the number of items and more about the function of each item and how it contributes to our home. Let me know if you enjoyed this video! I can't wait to take you through the rest of the house as declutter, re-organize and minimalize!

Recently I’ve sort of been going down the rabbit hole of RU-vid decluttering videos, to the point that almost every video in my recommended section is a mom and her spiffy lookin closet (it’s great, I love it). All that to say, out of all the videos I’ve watched, your channel has got to be one of my absolute favorites!!! I’m not really the demographic for the mom vids (I’m 19), but the decluttering content has really filled a void that I did not know existed. I’ve so far Marie Kondo-ed my whole room and closet, and I finally convinced my mom to let me tackle the beast that is our attic!! Decluttering is making me super happy, and I just wanted to say thank you for all the fantastic content you put out. It’s super motivating and inspiring and brings me so much peace and joy ❤️

Somehow lost you for a while and then one day like 3 years ago I remembered you and looked you up and I’ve watched every video since! I love your family and it makes me excited to get married and have a godly family like yours one day ❤️ you are such an inspiration!

Wish I could declutter my garage, but my husband doesn't see the mess the same as I do. My husband is a pilot, so his Piper Cub is in the building, more than a regular garage. It also stores lumber that we've collected our the years. But the area I find claustrophobic is the area where our 2 cars are parked. You're fortunate to have your husband on board.🤟

I love these as someone who is trying too become a minimalist slowly but surly. I feel like no matter how much i get rid of it still looks a bit cluttered though 😂 but that’s probably because the house is soooo small we have 2 kids (plus one on the way with stuff already here) and two adults in a two bedroom) 😂 we are trying too move but it works for now unless all this is over enough we can house hunt

That basically describes my parents' garage - lived in the house 22 years and the only place you can walk when the big garage door is closed is from the house garage door to the big garage door - that's only a few feet, and we have to go sideways because the space is so narrow. They haven't been able to park any cars in there in over a decade (when we first moved in, we could park both cars in there really easily; now, when I'm there, we have to have a sedan, an SUV, a minivan, and a pickup all parked in the driveway). They're slowly working their way through decluttering their house, but I definitely led the charge there - I only have one box of mine left to finish going through at their house, which will happen the next time I visit them (ran out of time the last time I was there).

Ever since Ive been in quarantine, its made me realize that a lot of us live our lives to impress others with the materialist things we own, whether it be designer clothes, expensive jewelry, the biggest and most expensive things dont often bring joy, we often do it to show off/impress others, we want people to think that we have it all and that we have it all together, when really ITS OKAY to not have it all. Clutter also plays a big part in all of it as well, when there are less things, you will be less overwhelmed and more content.

I agree. Using a kindle has meant I don't keep many hard copy books except for those in my specific interest: Russian art, architecture, history, jewels, imperial fashions and imperial estates. These have lots of color photos and Kindle just doesn't "do it" for those types of books. The other thing I sort of collect is jewelry. I have two four tier jewelry boxes, one wood, the other bought in layers at BBBeyond. The jewelry is stuffed in them but it is NOWHERE else. I do not leave it out on display because that causes tarnish on the silver and it gets too dusty. I esp like Native American turquoise and Russian amber. Other than those two types of things, that's it. I have a yarn stash that gets constantly used and I have a large executive desk with my polymer clay studio on it. Other than that I do not decorate for seasons except Christmas so I don't have lots of decor in bins. I don't keep tons of drink cups for travel, don't have more than 12 pairs of shoes including winter boots (I live in FL but keep those for emergency trips north), few clothes except for tees that get hard use in FL for nine months of the year.....we don't have a ton of extra kitchen equipment that do redundant tasks.

Whenever I am done with a painting job I pour the paint into mayo, pickle or other jars and I label and store them. It's best to use a jar about the size of the paint so there is not a lot of air in there. Paint cans dry up and get rusty and when you need the touch up in a couple years it's no good. I live in a cold climate so I keep each jar in the closet of the room I used the paint or in my laundry room. If I have half gallons or so left I try to mix them and use it up painting closets or garages or I donate to Habitat. So I keep NO paint cans.

Your series has really inspired me to declutter my house. It’s tiny with practically zero closet space, so I didn’t think there’d be much. But omgosh there was a TON of junk crammed into the corners 🙈 Feeling so much better with everything cleaned out and reorganized. Having easy access to those “put away” places makes it so much easier to keep the house picked up! The biggest clutter source was definitely the infant equipment what with the swing and bouncy seat and bumbo and outgrown clothes all hogging storage and floor space. I’m having to wait until the state reopens to donate, but I’ve got my eye on a brand new crisis center in my area. Hopefully it’s open soon. I want my living room back 😂😂 thanks for the inspiration and practical approach!

As far as wrapping paper, I've started collecting the brown paper that comes in Amazon boxes then I get jute twine from dollar tree and it makes really cute very low waste (or zero waste if you don't use tape and reuse the string) alternative.
@virginiasoskin9082
@virginiasoskin9082 4 года назад
My Mom lived through the great Depression and saved rubber bands, string, twine, paper bags. She washed and reused plastic bags. I know of people who just get white tissue paper or a white roll of banquet table paper and use that for all gift wrap. A few holiday specific rubber stamps and a few ink pads can be used to decorate the paper, or have the kids draw on the boxes with markers. Cheap crinkle ribbon or colored twine. We have a bag of bows we use every Christmas and save them from year to year and reuse them. We don't buy new books as Christmas gifts unless we have to; our family pact that used books are fine; this keeps paper out of landfills and saves trees. We make Christmas gift tags from last years' Christmas cards using a round cookie cutter to trace around. You don't have to spend a ton of money on wrap. I ONLY ever buy gift wrap on sale after Christmas on deep discount.

The shed/garage is the worst space in the home any place that ends up being for storage seems to accumulate crap and because its storage specific space you tend to not care o revisit the space compared to others especially memory type things which you know youll probably never look at again. 😂😂😂 weve all been there and we'll all probably be there at least a couple more times in our lives. My goal is to declutter the storage at leaat once every 5 years that way it wont be decades between opening things.

If you have a thing for wrapping paper, perhaps this will be a fun idea: my in-laws' wrapping paper game! Every year, save two identical pieces from each new wrapping paper you get on gifts (or buy yourself, assuming you use it that year), glue them to index cards, and make a matching game! Add to it every year and it's a fun tradition that just keeps growing. I also like to mark who gave us that paper and what year on one of the cards. It's a fun trip down memory lane each year when we pull it out. My sister-in-law goes crazy and buys way too much wrapping paper because she loves the game, but I just can't use it up that fast, so I actively avoid the wrapping paper aisle so I'm not tempted (I failed this year), because we get plenty of variety each year already.

Good morning, QUESTION 😜 to the commenters. 🥰 Did anyone besides me giggle in the beginning when hubby is sweeping? There’s so much to do and that floor is going to become a disaster, it just hit my tickle bone when all I could hear was him sweeping behind her talking, so cute and adorable
@NatalieBennett
@NatalieBennett 4 года назад
Hahaha that’s funny! We stopped to sweep SO many times during this project because it’s so annoying to walk over crumbs and debris while trying to organize ! It was actually a part of this video that I didn’t include in the editing where I talked about this very thing!

Don’t feel too bad about your wrapping paper situation... I probably have way over 100 rolls in our basement. 🙈🤷🏻‍♀️ I can’t help myself, it’s just so fun to get each year (always on sale). And wrapping is my favorite part of gift-giving 🥰

We’ll do our garage next weekend, usually we declutter and clean it each year in May :) However we still have a 1000sqfoot basement to do with similar things: kids’ stuff, paints, equipment, big-big pantry and deep freezer, men’s cave, wine cellar... since I have my 2year-old I only get there for minutes (not safe place for a child). Hope we get to tackle it one day, I will need my hubby too...and some free hours. Great job, Natalie, as always 💪🏻🤗

I imagine they put the wrapping paper over the chest freezer so they could wrap presents using the top of the chest freezer as a table.

UtahTabby The previous owners didn’t have a chest freezer there. We brought it here when we moved 😊

🤘your declurtering videos is how I found your channel! I love how real you have been during this process. I have been a minimalist for 3 years now. We are a family of 3 living in a 500 sq ft home. Dept free! Its not easy I wish we had more room most days. But its so easy to clean up. I love watching your declurtering videos for motivation. Also an awesome tip I hear one time and it stuck was the 20 20 rule. If your stuck on an item can I replace it in 20min? And is it under $20. If yes get rid of it. I have used this so much and LOVE it. I have never had to repurchase anything!

Were the garage shelves already in place when you bought this house or did you install/build them yourselves? I really need something similar! :)

Love it! Finally someone who has "stuff" in their garage just like I do. You show the real life stuff-including kid mess. I was hoping I would get further along in my garage before hot weather settled in where I live-but the 90's have arrived. I love how you and your hubs work together. My hubs and I are like oil and water. We spend way more time arguing about how to get it done than actually getting it done! His version of organizing is 2 steps-toss everything or chuck it all together in a bin put the lid on it and don't ever go in it ever again (aka outta sight outta mind). I'm the over-thinker and perfectionist and want it super organized, labeled, etc. I take so much time planning and thinking I rarely get what I want done before I have to drop the project and go fix dinner, or do the laundry, or go run errands.

If you use the bulk grains slowly you should store them in the freezer to kill critters, with such temp fluctuations in garages it's best to keep them colder.

Yay! Someone else who is scared to do their garage. I've been tackling mine bit by bit. Really need to build a storage wall like you have for your tubs, that's the one big thing holding me back. Don't have the wood for it and don't want to leave till this whole ordeal is over. That and all my donations are piling up out there since I can't drop them off. Dump stuff however is easy to get rid of. Thank you so much for all the amazing videos and being real with it, showing your boys room had me rolling since I have 2 boys as well and it just amazes me how messy the room can get. I've still got to tackle that as well. Also don't know how to do emoji's on here but I've been watching from the beginning and loved it the whole way.

I totally feel your pain about the wrapping paper. I helped my mom go through her gift wrapping supplies around Christmas time and she has so much. There's even more we have in our basement that we haven't touched in years since we can't get to it and forgot it was even there

Just a suggestion maby you could remove one of the big bookshelf type things and maby have the wall for a display of westons tools but where he can still take them of the wall to use them

Imagine how much money we could save if we didn’t buy all this stuff. As well as Reduce, Reuse and Recycle we should first of all Refuse and Reconsider the purchase. It’s not until we do such a clean up that we realise how much money we waste on just STUFF. good work, keep it up. 🙏🏻

Do you park your vehicles in the garage? I think it is important that you do. Keeps you out of the weather, safety, security, and easier to load/unload your Kids and groceries. Also, if you will move all the groceries into the pantry, it simplifies knowing what you have.
@NatalieBennett
@NatalieBennett 4 года назад
There are definite perks to parking in the garage, but we have chosen to extend the square footage of our living space by having it serve primarily as our home gym. It’s more of a benefit in this capacity than if we were to park a few feet forward and take up all the space with our vehicles!
