After 25 years as a motor mechanic I would suggest that you revert back to the original mechanical fuel pump, it's there for reason. The electric pump appears to be over fuelling the carburettor due to the lack of a return pipe. The carburettor will have an automatic choke for cold starting, and you only have to dip the throttle pedal once to activate it. Before you start playing about with the carburettor may I suggest that you get a can of carb cleaner,, then remove the fuel line from the carb, not forgetting to clamp if off, otherwise you'll have fuel everywhere. Run the engine until the float chamber is empty, then refill the float chamber with carb cleaner by spraying it into the chamber via the fuel inlet that you removed the fuel line from. Start the engine again and let it run until it stops, refit the fuel line and after a few cranks the engine will start. The carb cleaner does just that, it cleans all of the internal fuel passages and jets of wax build up, without the need to dismantle the carb. I've used this method many times, and it's always worked. Hope this helps. All the best from the UK.

Mayberry Mini trucks, Sparta NC. AFAIK, They sell and service all brands of Mini Trucks. May be a source no just for running parts, but for a tailgate and a hitch bumper. If not, you have a welder!, Just saying. If you were close, I could make you one. If you can't get what you need to make it 4WD, you could put tracks just on the rear of it ~~maybe~~. Vapor-lock happens when the fuel or fuel line gets hot, easy to find just look to see if your fuel supply is anywhere near a heat source. Remember it smoking, that very well could be the excess fuel. Without that return, it could be building too much fuel pressure, and over filling the carb. If it is over filling, it could have fuel in the oil, over filling the carb will also cause it to wash the cylinder walls, causing it to not build enough compression, and make the cylinders not be able to fire. You can get an inline filter, that will have an In side and two out sides. The extra out side, will return excess fuel (fuel pressure) back to the tank. Not sure if you can get a Haynes manual, or a Chiltons, but my guess is it needs a low PSI pump. For reference, a VW Bug in stock form only wants like 3.5 PSI of fuel, This machine is roughly half the size of the VW, So it also being carbed, I am thinking it doesn't need a lot of PSI. The plugs probably had a lot of soot, which would be an indicator of too much fuel. Check the oil , see if it's over full, smell the dipstick, and see if it smells like fuel. These Mini's have a big following, several facebook groups, you might be able t get some good info there.

I would suggest you spend a bit of time trying to determine exactly what the problem is before simply throwing lots of un-necessary parts at it. I would drop the tank to inspect and possibly get it cleaned and sealed. Same with the carb. Removed and inspect it to see if sediment and/or any other type of buildup is an issue. Rebuild the original fuel pump system and correct any other visible issues you find. New filters on old fuel systems are always money well spent. So, best advise is "stop guessing" and patiently investigate until you find issues to correct.

as a 50+ year retired mechanic with a LOT of foreign experience, I am betting the hot restart has something to do with the choke or the choke pull-off so it's flooding on the restart. (too much choke) The choke pull-off has a diaphragm that dries out and no longer does its job when vacuum is applied. That return line on the fuel system is for preventing vapor lock because hidden engine gets hot when you shut it down and the air flow stops. (called after-boil) Vapor lock / after boil takes about 5-10 minutes after shutdown and maybe 30+ minutes to go away. (cooling period) I would also bet the electric pump was added because the truck sat for a week or more between uses (off season?) so needed a lot of cranking to get fuel up each time. You can either return to the OEM style pump or rig up a proper return line by adding a restrictor in a hose to allow some fuel back to the tank. I used a piece of brake line with the end soldered over, then drilled a 1/16" hole in the solder. Force that into the rubber hose and presto... you have just enough bleed-back to solve that problem and can maintain the electric pump for faster starting in the off season.
@Esteban_Herrera
@Esteban_Herrera 14 дней назад
If the pressure was too great to get past the carburetor's needle and seat the bowl will over fill and leak fuel out of the carb's vent. The electric fuel pump should shut off after the set pressure has been achieved. With the engine off and the ignition on, the electric fuel pump will shut off.
@rupe53
@rupe53 13 дней назад
@@Esteban_Herrera that would be a safety feature with a factory installed electric pump. Most likely this one runs all the time. (key on) Who knows what pump they used or what the pressure is. That would usually be beyond the average DIY type.
@Esteban_Herrera
@Esteban_Herrera 13 дней назад
@@rupe53 Yes this runs all the time. It's not building pressure to turn it off. Yes factory installed pumps have a safety so the pump will turn off under 5psi of oil pressure. If the car rolls sideways or upside down the car will stall. The float can't work in these positions and will continue pumping fuel. This fuel will leave the carburetor through the bowls vent and spue all over a hot engine and onto the ground. The fumes will soon catch fire with a huge fire ball. Crash and burn. Holley sells this oil pressure switch. So Yes, Who knows who or how this pump was installed.

I’ll give you a suggestion for learning standard: start the vehicle and put it in first, ease out the clutch as you add gas and get the truck moving , then depress the clutch and stop. Do the same with reverse. Those are your two sensitive gears because the vehicle is usually stopped. When you’re comfortable you can move onto shifting to second and on up and down. ( also before you drive or even start the vehicle, depress the clutch and go through the shift pattern a few times. That will give you a feel for where the gears are ). Hope this helps. Hal

Gina, in 1970, I didn't know how to drive a standard. My car was parked in the "L" of our "L" shaped driveway and my dad's truck was parked straight in and my car wouldn't fit around it. It was Friday night and I had things to do! I knew the general workings of the pedals and gear shift, my parents were out of town and no one to help. Oh, and our driveway was downhill, as was the street. Once I got the truck started, I put it in reverse, got it backed up & out of the driveway and started up the street hill. I decided to drive the dang truck until I could figure it all out for myself and shift well. That night I was a girl on a mission and the boys thought I was cool for driving my Dad's truck around town. I have never looked back and even learned how to drive a semi - 10 gears in a pinch (at summer job)!! Be brave and just get in and drive around until clutching and shifting feels comfortable. Then it will be just like riding a bike ... you'll never forget how to do it!!! ❤❤❤

With the low mileage I would think replacing the original fuel pump would be your best starting point. The lobe on the cam that moves the pump arm cannot have failed in 4k miles. An original style fuel pump will have the correct pressure and if the pressure gets too high it will pump excess fuel back to the tank. Electric fuel pumps come in all pressure levels. So as you indicated in the episode it could be too much fuel on a hot start. I would watch a bunch of videos on your truck before moving on to modifications. You will learn a lot of little details and short cuts to help you maintain and repair your truck. Install all your new parts, monitor that clear/opaque fuel filter and keep a log of everything you have done. And clean out that rodent mess. Your wife should not be subjected to anything like that.

Al, I know this is petty, but it will reuce frustration. When rolling up a hose that is attached to something at one end, start at the end that is attached. That way all the natural twists that you create while rolling it up will move out to the unattached end. Otherwise you will fight all those twists as was evidenced when you rolled up that air hose from the compressor. It makes it so much easier to keep it rolled neatly.
@4Classie
@4Classie 14 дней назад
No, start 1/3 in middle, make circles on ground ( stacked circles ) and when a twist appears, flip under, to again keep going, by making circles on ground, that way the hose, line or rope never tangles when needed again next time, easy roll-up easy unrolling, nothing to even think about, when one ends done, just grab and go wrapping the other, we would tie hoses twice and forklift, so flipping over still unravels without issue ! From Oilfield (Casing Tongs ) experience, it would take 4 guys struggling for about 15 minutes, what I would do myself in 5 minutes, never tangles, a pair of stiff long, high volume hydrologic hoses, ( done Thousands of times ) learned by rolling-up 300' Fire Hoses THUMBS Islands Long Beach, CA !

Al, check the carb for a tag number, sometimes called a List number, it may be stamped into the carb body itself, take that number to the dealer and/or the auto parts store & find the rebuild kit for it. I want to emphasize the importance of thourougly cleaning the varnish out of the carb, check that the float isn't saturated, carefully inspect the needle & seat & that it functions properly with a good float. The cleaning aspect is the most important aspect when rebuilding carburetors... The old mechanical fuel pumps are fine, but they too wear out in time... I'm in no way an expert, but in Italy we all learn how to drive with gears and not with automatic, and my dad always told me not to play much with the gas pedal when starting otherwise it would likely stall the engine and it would cause issues in the long run. I don't know if I explained it well enough, but I'm really sure that you doing maintenance on all the fuel related parts (and not only) will surely help out a lot! As my grandpa would say "you need to put some SeaFoam in it and smoke it out!" That was his answer to anything that ran on gas back in the day. Since you have a backup carb, I would suggest pulling the existing one and giving it a good cleaning to get any varnish out. With luck your parts may still be good and you can reinstall after cleaning and then tweak the fuel settings.

My guess is that your Hijet has three problems: 1. It's got the wrong fuel pump (that's feeding the carb at too high a pressure). 2. It's got a sticky or defective float valve inside your carb (it's probably all varnished up). 3. The carb needle valves are probably way out of adjustment (when the float started sticking, someone probably fiddled with the carb to try to "fix" it, and then tried replacing the mechanical fuel pump). If the carb float failed first, someone might have wrongly assumed the mechanical fuel pump was the problem and replaced it with the electric fuel pump. Before you replace the mechanical fuel pump, you should clean and rebuild the carb and then try it with the old mechanical fuel pump to test whether the pump is actually bad.

Don't think 4 wheel drive or lift kit, just better tires, better shocks and duct tape, cause it has No place to mount Tow Hitch, So' instead of Al taking-over Gina's Truck, it's back to being Gina's Truck, because nothing can be towed behind, Now' it's for carrying Cows Milk to Harvest House and for Secret Garden hauling !

DO NOT put bedliner on it! Bedliner, either roll on or spray on has abrasives in it so your load will not slide around (or you). That would be OK if it wasn't a dump and was a regular bed. But the bedliners are going to prevent any load you put in there from sliding out. What we did with ours was use por15 and then some cheap rattle can. It gives it some abrasion resistance while keeping the rust from setting in and is easy to touch up as your loads scrape up the bed. As far as your tailgate goes, contact Mayberry mini trucks out of North Carolina. If he doesn't have a tailgate or know where to find one, then they don't exist anymore. Mayberry is online and he has a RU-vid channel as well.

I am amazed a man that is so mechanically and that knows how the weld and use tools has not completed his workshop yet, the minute that workshop would have went up and I had that back wall done. I would have had a big shadow board going along that wall with workbenches toolboxes, a car lift. That would be the heart of my operations right there, but to each his own your farm your rules I do think everything that you have done is so beautiful, that homestead is so awesome

To Al Animals are first priority, consider the 3 are eating 2 Chickens weekly, that's 100 a year, it's time to grow and butcher variety ! And that is why Barn build took priority over Shop being equipped, No Big Greenhouse yet and Barn needs animal water supply before winter, the Shop just keeps getting pushed to back corner, because farm animals come first and no complaints will change !

AL, as a retired mechanic old enough to have worked on cars before fuel injection came along, I would first get the mechanical fuel pump and hook it back up as that is how they designed it to handle excess fuel from the pump. I suspect that there is only be one fuel line going to the carb and no return line back to the tank. This means the carb's needle and seat along with its float are the only thing stopping excess fuel pressure. By design most mechanical fuel pumps run at around 4-5psi and when the float inside the carb raises in the float bowl it closes the needle valve and then excess fuel is diverted through the mechanical pumps return line back to the tank. The electric pump most likely was put on if they could not find an original mechanical replacement one, That being said they normally can run in the 30-50psi range and without a return line the carb float and needle and seat must hold back any excess fuel and pressure without a return line to divert it back to the tank. On older vehicles with Carbs the float may or may be metal or they can be a another buoyant material and they can become saturated over time and when they do they are too heavy and can no longer fully close the needle and seat to stop the excess fuel which will cause flooding or running way too rich. Also check the distributor cap inside for signs of excess moisture or carbon tracking (may look like pencil lines from center electrode to any of the spark plug electrodes, this will cause misfires and/or hard starts) replace the cap & rotor and if the distributor has Points and Condenser, either replace them too or at a minimum clean the points with a emery board and re gap them. I Hope you find this useful and this helps.......

You can try running a bottle of fuel system cleaner in it first but, i think there is something like a clogged jet or 2 in the carburetor and the needle in the float bowl is not sealing. drop the float bowl unpin the float and the needle and make sure the needle is clean and it the seat is clean as well then reinstall it. It will be easier if you remove the carb and you can run some cleaner through the carb before reinstalling it.

I would assume it has an automatic choke, I think it may be sticking on, it is a very common problem with auto chokes, if it is stuck on or partially on it will make it smoke and run lumpy, it would cause it to cough and backfire when you shut it off, it would also make it very hard to start when the engine has warmed up, when it did start does it take time to come back to idle (tickover)? thats also very indicative of the choke stuck on. The electric fuel pump shouldn't be an issue, it sounds fine, if it is flooding the carb it would be an issue with the float or float needle in the carb. You changed the plugs, leads and distributor cap, did you change the rotor arm? ( I didn't see a rotor arm in the video), cap and rotor should always be changed as a set, is it electronic ignition or has it got the old style points and condensor under the distributor cap? if its points type you could try cleaning the elecrical contacts and re-gaping the points and check the insulation on the cable going to the condensor or just replace them. This is one of my area's of speciality, in 2020 I passed a masters degree in motorcycle engineering with a speciality in engines. Great video, Thank you.

Al, I am Not a mechanic, but having lived in Brazil for 49 years, and the problems with carburaters, many times when they would change the fuel, they would WASH OUT THE FUEL TANKS to get any residential crud left in the tank, not to be picked up by the filter or carb. Just my thoughts. have a great day and week-end.

You honestly don't need a manual to take the old carb off, clean it & put back on again. I did two recently without manuals or issues. If has rubber gaskets you can use the same ones if not damaged. If paper ones, you'll need new replacements, but you can make your own using original as a template. Carbs, I think are one of the simple things to do... Trust me, I'm no mechanic.
