Peanuts aren't nuts(they're legumes, the same family as peas), but are often packaged in factories that handle actual nuts. The warning is there because that's the law. They're not listing nuts on the ingredients but run a risk of being contaminated so they must include the warning to ensure people are aware of the risk if they have a nut allergy(but aren't allergic to peanuts).

The difference is A) we have societies to protect and elevate us, B) values change with technology (and therefore every generation will have a different value system) and C) with technology being so infused into our daily lives...social media specifically...we are hyper aware of everything happening that probably already has happened but wasn't put on blast.
