I sat through every episode in the 1980’s and loved this series. Searched for years and when finally found it unfortunately it had been cut and edited into a completely different story. I thank you for uploading. The original had something like 27 or 28 episodes? It was a terrific series. Let us hope!
Very accurate portrayal of society's attitudes towards male violence against women. Interesting that the scriptwriters did the stereotypical thing first (blaming the young woman for any sexual indiscretion, portraying her as a liar who cared only about herself and willing to sacrifice the well being of the whole community; making the young man completely innocent). But then they justified it all with a really genuine character: the hostile, bigoted, bullying, abusive, suspicious father, always expecting conspiracies and collusion, always eager to assume the worst. Excellent portrayal of the complexities of reality, especially then, but still alive and well now, in 2014!
Why do the Americans swear and curse almost non-stop? For one thing, no American officer would have cursed like that at a social gathering in front of women. I'm no fan of Americans but even I know what it was like back in 1943 and they were more polite than that. And in 2016, they still wouldn't.
Socialism, entitlement and the hippy generation of free this and free that! My country has gone to hell in a hand basket. I have visited other countries & they seem to be catching up a bit.
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view!" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
Really enjoy the series. Just too bad the directors/producers didn't use their heads and paint the 1 real B-17 used throughout the series in the time correct paint scheme. It just makes no sense that they didn't. Sloppy work on someone's part.
@@stevenrobson9480 I come from Ipswich & I can tell you, compared to the Suffolk accents, the American ones knocked spots off them & in all fairness, quite a few of the GI actors, were from Cananda, or the US. :)
The English make better Americans than Americans Play the English. Like those Roman "Swords and Saddles" pictures, the English make better Romans than Romans! Who wants an Italian playing Julius Caesar in the movies?
Not true. The portrayal of Americans here by Brits, is atrocious (so much so that's it induces frequent cringing--though the acting on an emotional level makes up for it in most cases), as is almost always the case in British productions. Even though American films of recent years, are of lower quality overall--the Brits in them play Americans the most convincingly it's ever been done on film. I'm specifically referring to the Brit actors who've sadly ruined themselves for fame, and have transitioned into Hollywood careers. Great actors whose careers in their home country were phenomenal--and the work they produced of great value, throw it all away for fame and fortune. They decide to go to Hollywood and do very well. But, because of the trash that that hellhole insists on producing (as it's a socio-political brainwashing factory, and has nothing to do with art)--they cease to make anything of real worth ever again (unless they do a project back at home. And often, their chops have been dulled by the time they do--so what they offer that piece is not what one would've expected from them). Anyhoo, the only thing they do improve upon, is the ability to play an American in a natural, unaffected, and well-researched enough way, to come across as plausible. They don't seem like some frighteningly awkward caricature, as they do in this piece--some odd fantasy conjured up by people who've read about America, have spent a week vacationing here--but no time immersing themselves in and figuring out the mores and customs of even one of our innumerable, incredibly individual, micro-regions.
The writing, on a human level is still great--and that carries it, making it a wonderful treat. But, there are major flaws in terms of culture and custom, not just accent and attitude, in this piece. E.g. the cultural identities are a pastiche of a pastiche, they don't have the subtlety or even clarity of a real place. And yes, there would've been cultural differences between the nations. But American culture still had a GREAT deal more honor, respect, and regard for the welfare of others, expressed in every part of every day life, even decades later. These officers might have been mischievous at times, and certainly would've wooed the girls--but they'd never have been as uncouth, aggressive (sexually and otherwise), combative, and downright rude. American culture at that time was more innocent, and people as a whole, were conservative in their values. BUT, who doesn't ADORE Tony Wharmby?! Still, this would've perhaps been a more accurate portrayal--if he'd done this project after his stints on JAG and NCIS ;)
Please tell me that you are joking. The Americans portrayed here by Brits are simply awful. Awful. They drift in and out of American accents. And yes, English actors had better be good at American accents, because the biggest movie stage in the world is the US. There simply isn't enough work in England to support them so they go where the work and fame is. No shame in doing that.
While much of what you say is correct, it's silly to portray all of Hollywood as bad and English work as some shining example of wonder. So much movie and TV that comes out of England is horrific and some of the finest films from history are from Hollywood. In fact, many of the greatest "British" movies are in fact, Hollywood products. Both produce great movies and both produce trash-we just do more because our industry is much larger.
