I was in high school when this song was popular, and it was one of my favs from this era. From my older siblings, I also had a good introduction of music from the 70s and was also introduced to the Beatles. I was surprised to learn just in the last few years that this was actually a remake. Surprised, I never knew this wasn't the original.

That's exactly what makes the 80's so excited in music. Bands sounds different even all were rock bands. The music had so many different variations: soft rock, hard rock, metal, heavy metal, trash, pop, punk, power ballads, R & B, New wave. 80's was the decade when bands were creating music all the time. So many bands born in this decade. It was a privelege for me to be a college young man and experienced all i mentioned. It was so much fun. There concerts everywhere. My favorite were all those covers' bands at summer festivals at the Beach. Awesome!!!!

Originally done as a demo by Dionne Warwick in 1963, this song first chanted by Lou Johnson in the summer of 1964, Sandi Shaw's version reached No. 1 in the UK in November 1964 and was the first version of the song I heard. It charted in other countries too but only reached No. 52 in the US. (Johnson's reached No. 49). R.B. Greaves recorded the song in 1970 and it reached No 27 on the music charts. It was 20 years after the song was composed that Naked Eyes did their version, which made the top 10 in the US!

Dionne Warwick covered the song in the 60's after several artist's recorded the song. Love her version too. Warwick took 15 Bacharach/David songs into the Top 40. "Walk On By" and "I Say a Little Prayer," "Anyone Who Had a Heart" "What The World Needs Now Is Love" "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" & so many others. They were not bells but chimes that they were playing which when I was in band in High School in the 80’s was part of the percussion in our band. We had bells and chimes in our percussion but those are the chimes you are hearing being played in this song that sound like church bells ringing. I always loved to hear them being played in our band during different songs. They use a mallet to strike the chimes and they make such beautiful sounds! Love this song because of the chimes being played in it. ❤

New Wave Brits were heavily influenced by 60s Soul. Sandie Shaw sung a popular version of this song in '65. Soft Cell did covers of "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?", and "What?" Bow Wow Wow covered "I Want Candy" The English Beat covered "The Tears of a Clown" Billy Idol covered "Mony Mony" Etc. ...

When you mix a 60s pop song with British synth-pop, it's hard to go wrong. A lot of 80s UK artists found hits by digging into the catalogs of US artists from previous decades.

This was definitely on the alternative label in those days. WHFS in Baltimore was the alternative music station and they played all of these great songs. Naked Eyes, The Fixx....so many talented bands.

most unusual sounds are from a synthesizer, why this is called the "synth sound" of many bands during this time

Please tell me y'all know that this is a cover of Dionne Warwick. Some of their other songs "Flying Solo", "Low Life", and "Fortune And Fame". And, yes, this is New Wave.

Yeah this would have been included in New Wave and even Post Punk - It is also VERY British- it also has a Ska/Reggae backbeat not found in the original Bacharach version.

There's an absolute must-see documentary called "808," which explains the revolution of synth sounds and their impact on pop music, especially in the early-mid 80s. I think it's available on Prime, not sure, but find it. You'll be completely mind blown, and it will enhance your appreciation of the songs you react to. Hearts & love!!

I remember this video playing so much on MTV. Another that came out a little earlier (1982) is "What About Me?" by Moving Pictures. One hit wonder, I think, but so poignant and thought provoking...

This groups falls under the "Techno" style. Techno is worthy of your exploration. Psychedelic Furs, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (OMD), Echo and the Bunnymen, ABC and the Pet Shop Boys are all worthy of listening to. You guys have another 30 plus reactions lying in this style of music alone. Keep up the good work and continue enjoying yourselves!

According to my research, the "bell" sounds was a modified factory patch named Phased Gong on a Synclavier II sampling keyboard. Those "bell" sounds were big in the 1980s because the Yamaha DX7 FM digital synthesizer was introduced in 1983 and has a phenomenal bell based patch. I still have my DX7 because it is so phenomenal.

Ya know what’s cool about this reaction? This was one of my favorite songs when this came out and I just learned that this was actually written in the 60s. I really enjoy this reaction channel and the info I’m learning even on songs I thought I knew.
