Don't forget Mercy, the dog in the first episode knew Nana Adler was infected. The difference with Ellie is that while she is infected, she's still 100% human.

It could also just be a time limit on how long the fungus stays active in her system before it dies out. She first failed the scan just a few weeks after getting bit. Her last bite/infection was so many months ago, that there isnt anything for the dog to detect. Similar to covid how you can be detected late on tests or extended for a few weeks before you are "clear"

@@SubzeroBlack68 oh absolutely, but I also think we were meant to remember Mercy's reaction to Nana Adler because we're supposed to wonder if the dog is an actual way of detecting infection. So yes, Ellie's infection may be dormant but the important part is that the dog knows she's fully human.

@@sarcasmxkate That's not true though. She still has cordicepts inside her. She just doesn't have symptoms that the dog would pick up on. Such as twitching.

@@jmoon6909 it is true. Ellie, while having cordyceps in her, is still human. Mercy wasn't looking at Nana when she was twitching. She was staring at her sitting perfectly still. Ellie's always had the cordyceps in her, but she's fully and completely human. I think that's what they're saying with the animals. We know animals can sense danger and are pretty good judges of character. Mercy knew something was wrong with Nana. This doggo knew Ellie wasn't a threat.

@@sarcasmxkate no you missed something. We didn't see the dog staring at Nana until after we saw Nana twitching in the out of focus background earlier in the scene. Anyway I do understand what you mean by human. Everyone infected is still human if you don't count the cordicepts and Ellie has a variant of cordicepts living inside her. The only difference is it's not a parasitic relationship. They formed a symbiosis.

The closer Joel grows to Ellie the more his trauma from his daughter dying is surfacing. He is starting to care about her. The last little girl he cared about, in his mind, he failed. He couldn’t protect his daughter. On this trip he just keeps getting reminded of his inability to protect Sarah. The fact that he is getting slower and older. His hearing is a liability to him and Ellie. He has been in multiple situations where he was helpless to protect Ellie who is no longer cargo to him but is growing into being family. Because of this Joel is now suffering from panic attacks because when he gets hit of the wave of realization that he may not be fit to protect Ellie he also gets hit with the trauma of his daughter dying again. Also because in this location where Tommy was is probably triggering to Joel cause it’s so much like the world before the virus destroyed everything. Like the world before Joel lost Sarah. After his argument with Ellie we see him flash back to decorating a Christmas tree with Sarah. Probably their last Christmas together. In one of the shots we can see a big Christmas tree in town. This could be trigger cause while his growing connection with Ellie is being up his fears and trauma of his daughter dying being in a normal like setting if also probably making him relived post Sarah death memories of her.

I've watched plenty of reactors where I felt they were fake crying just for the views so I stopped watching them. I watched others where I felt they were sincere so I kept watching them. I keep watching you guys because I feel like you are sincere. Sadness does not always equate to crying. People deal with their emotions differently which is exactly what the Last of Us is portraying. It's okay to be yourself and not express yourselves the way other people want you too. Also, I haven't looked at the stats of how accurate dogs sniffing cancer is, but how I found out my husky had cancer was my corgi started sniffing her mouth out of the blue. Took my husky to the vet because of other health issues she was having and turned out she had lung cancer. Then several years later, my border collie started sniffing my corgi out of the blue and when I took my corgi to the vet, he also had cancer. And I don't mean normal sniffing. This was sniffing in a specific area where they had never focused on before like my husky's mouth. I have a friend who's son is diabetic and they have a dog that has been trained to smell out when his blood sugar levels drop or rise too drastically and it has saved that son's life on multiple occasions.

That's a really good point about how the show handles mood and atmosphere. If you remember episode 4 Joel and Ellie camp for the night and they make it all dramatic playing up the threat they'd be found, so Joel doesn't sleep and we are almost expecting something to happen. Then it doesn't. But later Ellie and Joel are bonding and laughing about diahria and it's this wholesome moment but that's when they get caught by Henry and Sam. Obviously that was not a dangerous situation but at the time you don't know that. Then think of episode 5 where they talk about the infected being in the tunnels and Henry says they're not. They go down there and it's dramatic and tense but nothing happens. Then later they're just having a conversation and out of nowhere get shot at by the sniper. They're doing these things so keep you guessing and unsure of when you are safe to relax. Like Jaws or Halloween, it's really done well here.

Saw someone say it somewhere else but it’s prob true. FEDRA’s scanners most likely scan for antibodies that form after infections. The dog,however, can most likely smell the fungus itself. Ellie would have the antibodies but not the fungus.

I mean Joel’s lost a child. Ellie never knew her parents so she doesn’t know the loss. Just last episode Joel was talking about how kids are tougher because they grew up in the shit, while the adults have to adapt to it.

This is the most vulnerable we’ve seen from both Joel and Ellie yet. We know watching from Joel the desperation to close himself off to preserve whatever humanity he doesn’t want to lose yet and him breaking down in front of Tommy is indicative of how much he’s barely keeping it together, how this dam he built up for himself is breaking apart the more he gets closer to his new surrogate daughter. Ellie, on the other hand, is a whole different kettle of fish. This is where her abandonment issues begin to boil over the more she loses her innocence; between being orphaned by her parents, being pawned off by Marlene, losing Riley, Tess, Henry and Sam, now she has to watch her father figure pawn her off and abandon her too? This girl can’t catch a damn break; it breaks my heart when she repeatedly tells him “Don’t leave me alone”.

1:07 I feel you. I have similar reaction to some sad/horrible events both in fiction and in real life. I believe this is some kind of condition, when a person had to bottle up their emotions at some point in life (usually - in childhood/youth) and then either can't express them when needed or smile/laugh instead. That being said - your reactions are genuine and that's what matters. I'll take nervous laughter over some forced "emotional" reaction anytime.

Very good episode! They contrast the difference between the two brothers! One has been living a somewhat normal life while Joel has been going through hell and back! Joel was trying to break from Ellie because he thinks about his daughter that suffered and how he could not save her! Joel doesn't want to go through that type of pain again but I think he has no choice. Joel has a new child/daughter in his life!

Trained dogs are pretty accurate, my guy. Dogs trained to sniff out coronavirus had a 97% accuracy rate. Dogs trained to detect pancreatic cancer in urine have a 98% accuracy rate. Dogs are very good at sniffing out a person's emotions, which is probably why they comfort animals. 24:29 Why would Tommy "snitch" on Joel? You don't recall what Joel said about his brother on their way to Kansas, about Tommy being a "joiner," a person who dreams of saving the world? Joel knew what he was doing when he told Tommy that Ellie was immune, he knew that that would be enough to get Tommy to finish the job. Joel manipulated his brother into finishing his job, but in the end he decided to do it himself. Still, it was a dick move. 27:52 Joel was worried about getting Ellie killed. Joel is attached to Ellie, he has something to lose. His job was easier in the past because the man was dead inside. But then Ellie came along. Ellie is 14 years old, the same age Sarah was when she died. Ellie is smart and Witty like Sarah was too, and it doesn't help that Ellie has in interest knives like Sarah--we saw Sarah playing with Joel's knife when she took money out of his wallet in the first episode. Joel has been trying to keep his distance from Ellie, but she's a magnet that loves to talk, and the more she talks the more she reminds Joel of Sarah. For more than 3 months, Ellie's been chipping away at that wall around his heart, and she's found a way in; hence, the panic attacks. Ellie didn't know about Sarah until this episode, so Joel knows she's genuine. And he's likely starting to see Ellie as a second chance at fatherhood with a child that reminds him so much of the one he lost.

Thanks for time stamps. 11:31. I personally believe in the dogs cuz i know they can detect illnesses in real life. There is a point where I won’t debate my partner’s especially while the show is running. But yeah. I also know now in ep 1 the dog noticed granny was infected. 24:29. I forgot Tommy was about saving the world. Thanks for reminding me. I was waiting for things to go wrong badly at the settlement so I thought it was gonna bite Joel in the butt telling Tommy…but it was wholesome 27:52. We understand. I suffered panic attacks for the 1st time the same week and went to the hospital lol. So I definitely understand although the opinion of a heart attack was present and we cleared that up in the ending. Thanks for time stamps. Made it really easy to digest and follow along and see where we forgot something or how to clear up things on our end with you. Really good comment

I think it's just Maria's background as a lawyer that really makes her dislike him. What's more concerning is her lack of ability to hold Tommy accountable for his actions when even Tommy holds himself accountable.

You better put some respects on dogs noses lol. Their nose is thousands of times more sensitive than ours. The Police K9 that I worked with or seen have been accurate 99% of the time on their alerts. The other 1% is explained as the drugs were once stored there but isnt now but the odor remains. Dogs can be trained to sniff out almost anything. Great reaction otherwise lol.

Yeah in the game they actually used dogs to test. Not really a training just a natural thing. People even say animals know people’s true nature. If a dog doesn’t like you I surely ain’t messing with you either.

I haven't cried either RockD. I'm loving this series so far, the acting is phenomenal, I do feel for the characters but I just haven't felt like crying. y'know, if you need to "cry for business" you could always do what some actors do and use eye drops 😂 I'M PLAYIN!!! DO NOT use eye drops to make it look like you're crying!! The last thing you need is piss those angry that you didn't cry even more by mocking them, DO NOT POKE THE BEAR 😂😂😂

Unlike the game, you don't get infected by breathing spores, you HAVE to be bit. If the dog says you're infected, you can show otherwise by stripping to show no bite wounds.
