We Made it to Canada on our Own Boat 🇨🇦! (And toured BOLDT CASTLE along the way)

We have been thrilled about exploring Canada since first learning about the Loop a year ago, and today it's time to see if our preparation holds up! Before leaving the U.S. we have one more site to check out, Boldt Castle. Boldt Castle has a heartbreaking story. Originally it was architected and designed on Heart Island as a homage to Bold's wife, but unfortunately, she passed away during construction and all progress was halted, and the island was abandoned.
After touring Boldt Castle we cruise to Rockport to check in!
Thanks for watching!
Cheers from the Loop,
Jennifer and Elliot

ABOUT US
Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.
Thank you for following us along our journey!

I worked in Belleville, ON from 1983 through 1986 and, having married a woman from Trenton, I go back often- mostly to Kingston now. I used to frequently charter sailboats out of Olympic Harbor and spend magical weekends in the Thousand Islands. More often than not, we would spend the nights tied to a buoy in the Admiralty islands. Beau Rivage was one of our favorites. Fond memories in this video!

We have been on the water on the Canadian side many times in a rented 16 footer out of Gananoque. As such, and as we are not the best mariners we avoid the main channel and keep to the small bays and passages between the islands - they are magical. One passage near Smugglers Cove is between two islands, one of which is called whirlpool island. You can see the small pools and eddies. If you can , make sure you see Half Moon bay, the big boat will not navigate it but the tender will. I also suggest you visit Muskie Jake’s lounge in the Gananoque Inn. Also Kingston has some great Brew Pubs. You will remember this trip for years, the 1000 Islands is a true wonder. But the River can get very unfriendly when the wind gets nasty. Watch your charts too, many shoals.

Thanks so much for the suggestions, will have to add them to the list next time! It really is a wonderful area to cruise

Another great video ! Sorry to see you missed docking at ABay. You actually should have gone to the larger municipal dock on the other side of town, exactly opposite from the smaller municipal dock you were at, where there is a huge floating dock with plenty of water for large craft. 50’ and 60’ footers have enough to water to dock or fuel up on that side. The TI Club was a good alternative. You could have also hopped over to the River Edge private dock and they allow some day usage. Also minor correction, The St Lawrence River is all fresh water and not tidal water. You correctly noted there is a current that runs from west (Great Lakes) to east (Gulf of St Lawrence) that can very from 1 to 3 mph depending on season and how much outflow they allow at the Iroquois Gates and Robert Moses Dam and power station in Massena. Thankfully Canada got rid of ArriveCan app for land and water arrivals. Keep up the great videos !
@SchoandJo
@SchoandJo Год назад
Thanks Chris! We were trying to go for "free option" for the budget which is why we didn't go to the private or marina options. Maybe they would have allowed us to dock for the day! Regardless, ABay is on our list for next time because we missed exploring the town this time. Cheers!

what's that on your anchor? Ho yea welcome to Canada the land of weeds. Sometimes the vegation is so tichk our Danforth just glides on top, so we have two anchors, our Danforth and a plow otherwise you go for a midnight ride. The st Lawrence is no where near as bad as the Rideau Canal.

@MeltingFire68
@MeltingFire68 Год назад
The flag of the visiting country should never be flown higher than the US flag. That is a standard practice.
@SchoandJo
@SchoandJo Год назад
In nautical terms, I don't think you are correct. You can check Chapmans Piloting, that's where we got our information! For a power boat, the visiting country goes on the starboard spreader, it'd be impossible for that to be lower than the US flag off our stern.
@MeltingFire68
@MeltingFire68 Год назад
@@SchoandJo You are correct if you are flying the Visiting flag on the starboard spreader. If you fly both on the same pole on the stern the US flag should always be flown higher then the visiting country. Sorry, I just enough information in me to be dangerous as the say. Love your videos!

What better American or Canadian great loop
@SchoandJo

Their is no "better" Loop, but the Canadian portion is the more traditional route and the most scenic and historical. The United States only portion of the American Great Loop is not as popular, but still many choose that route every year!
