I had a burned hole in one of my vinyl windows from the previous owner, he had closed up the unit with the kitchen stove still being hot, I covered the hole with two vinyl decals, bought two identical decals and put one on the inside and one on the outside sandwiching the hole, now it just looks like I am patriotic.
I had a pop up tent trailer that periodically got mold spots on the tip outs. This is nearly impossible to avoid because you are bound to leave any campsite with some organic material on the canvas. Because your trailer is closed for travel and storage that organic material will begin to breakdown and cause mold. Canvas is very difficult to clean because it can be damaged by almost any cleaner except soap and water. That’s where the hydrogen peroxide comes in. Simply open up your trailer on a warm day or even at the campsite before you set up the beds etc. Mist straight hydrogen peroxide onto the canvas wherever you see dark mold. Don’t rub the canvas because you want to keep that material strong. Let the hydrogen peroxide dry and reapply as necessary until all those little mold spots are gone. This will not damage the fabric and will remove all the mold before you have a really big problem. I did this for over a decade on my tent trailer and never had a hole or weak fabric as a result. Just really white clean canvas. I hope this helps someone. I searched for years to find a safe product that works without damaging that canvas. Great video. Oh. I also use it straight on white baseball hats that get sweat stained. Does a great job.
Do you use regular like over the counter 3% thats on the the shelf at a pharmacy? I see theres also gallon size 12% for food service. Please let me know.
Thank you so much for all of these videos. I just bought my first pop up and I've been binge watching your channel to prepare myself to take good care of it and get it ready for camping season.
@@ItsPoppin it's a 1998 Rockwood! Everything is very solid and works, but since I bought it secondhand I learned from you that I need to go through everything before I take it out! I'm honestly so excited for the weather to break so I can pop it back open and get to work. I know it will be very time intensive but in the end it will pay off. My 5 year old son is so excited to get back to camping and everything we've done before this was in a tent. I've got a list of products that you've mentioned! The canvas on the outside is very dirty so this video has me hopeful that I can get most of the stains cleaned off. 🤗
We have a 15 year old pop up trailer. We have never found anything to clean the years of mold and mildew from the canvas ends. We watched your video a few weeks back and bought two bottles of the Starbrite cleaner. It is AMAZING! The canvas looks like new! Thanks so much for posting this video. Happy trails folks!
We had small rips in our screens. Previous owner used circles of sticky- backed screen-look tape, but they fell off. I took thicker, coated thread and sewed it in a weave pattern. In sunlight, the repair is hardly noticeable, whereas the taped repair had yellowed. Just a thought.
Followed your video and used the star bright product. I couldn’t believe how well it worked on the stubborn area, the pop up looks like new inside. Thanks for the excellent cleaning tips and great content..
For my home I used Copper Mesh for weep holes to keep insects/mice etc out, I used it for the PUP as well. That would be a great option other than a "plastic" mesh. Just purchased a 2006 Fleetwood Yuma(good condition) And your videos are helping BIG time with the little updates we are doing, THANKS
Your videos are all pretty good. Sadly I see so many campers that were never properly cared for or had mice get in them and destroy the canvass. I think a guy could get into flipping campers if he had the time and money needed to do this kind of work. I do not have the space. If I was still into upholstery, I would for sure get into restoring some of the higher end pop ups. I probably wouldn't get into some of the cheaper ones. I noticed the really small pop up campers sell really fast and fetch a good price. The other thing I noticed is no one really wants the bigger popups with all the extras. Things like showers, toilets, side pop outs and refrigerators don't seem to sell as well because at that point, you might as well buy a hard sided camper and many do.
Vinyl cleaner works pretty good but I prefer a plastic cleaner and conditioner on the windows. Ours were very stiff and crinkled as well as scratched and had friction marks from traveling. I used a very fine cut plastic polish and that removed the scratches and cleared up the haze. I got mine at a resale shop but you can pick it up at any automotive shop that sells paint. Its a 3M product and comes numbered 1-3. Its designed specifically for plastics. I ran across it years ago and swear by it now. If anyone is interested, I can send you a photo of the product. It works on tail lenses too!
Great job on the cleaning of the exterior of the camper. That was night and day with the three step process. Glad it turned out well. And those new lights on teh inside worked out well. That is definitely on our to do list as well to get. Thanks for sharing.
A new year. 2021, Came across your prep for another year of camping. We've had popups for 50 years, and our present coleman for 14 years. Took it on a trip west a few years ago, towing it 12000 miles, Time for minor repairs which I should have done last year. Keep those wheel bearing well greased, and air in the tires. So easy to ignore them. I Recommend an antisway bar even for a pop-up and radial tires, if possible. Finding the proper load rating can be a problem, but they wear much better than bias ply. The trailer will sway badly without the bar though. I bought mine years ago at Harbor Freight. Time for a new gasket for the roof also. Somehing else to consider is joining a camping club. We get to camp for 4 days at Newport (in the beach parking lot ). You can not get any closer to the ocean and the cost is less than $90. Happy camping!
I have rust stains on the inside of my vinyl bunk ends that cannot be removed with ANYTHING!!! I would love to see you do a review of fabric prints which can be used to redecorate(change colour) or to cover stains!!
Thank you for your channel! I just bought a 2008 popup and thankfully it doesn't need a lot of repair but your great advice is telling me exactly what all my questions are on repair and maintenance. Keep making your videos!
Thank you for your videos! I've used many of the products and suggestions you've given. My 2008 Rockwood has an electric wench which intimidated me to work on too much, however was able to temporarily repair with a zip tie this last weekend, so needless to say that is the one thing that "went to the shop". But I'm no longer intimidated to dig into that AC a little bit. So PLEASE keep showing how you open these amenities up and clean/repair them. Too bad about the awning pole. Mine had the same issue but luckily someone had installed a Carefree of Colorado awning at some point on the Rockwood and i was able to get just the leg replacement. Keep on and lets see some of you and your wifes travels as well!
For that sticky screen tape you can sprinkle some baby powder on the sticky side. That will keep the screen from sticking to the plastic window when storing. I was able to buy new telescoping awning poles online by themselves. They are a little pricey but it's nice that they telescope down in length and fit nicely in my rolled up awning along with the stakes and adjustable tension lines. what's really nice about them is if it's very rainy and windy you can lower them to around 2 feet off the ground which helps it deflect the wind and allows the rain water to come off the awning without puddling in the middle.
@@ItsPoppin On Ebay. Put in "telescoping poles" in the search and you'll see many. Mine were around $50 for two but there are other ones that are less money but not as robust as the ones I bought.
Simply awesome really works from the dollar store. You should re water proof ANY TIME you clean your canvas. It should be done every season anyways. I use soft scrub with bleach on a scotch guard pad after spraying the end panel caps with a deluted mix of simply awesome. Do not allow the mixture to run or it will streak. You do not need a ton of soft scrub but it will whiten the roof panels really well. Use a conditioner on the end caps It will keep them soft and supple as well as water proof them. I use automotive leather cleaner and conditioner from the dollar store.
You stated that you didn't use any mildew remover on the canvas. Isn't that what you used on the ceiling of the canvas over the bunk? If used on the inside do you not need to waterproof the canvas? I enjoy your videos so much! Thank you for doing all the hard work of filming to show others how to fo it! I just purchased an older Flagstaff on Monday.
Thanks! So we technically used it on the vinyl on the inside, which is what you saw in the video. The vinyl shouldn't need to be re-waterproofed. It's common to refer to the whole vinyl/canvas area as just the canvas even though theyre two different materials, which is where I think confusion can occur. The only true canvas we have are on the zip-down windows where we didn't use any mildew remover.
@@ItsPoppin Thank you for the info, I had no idea! But, I'm very new to the PUP world! I will keep watching and learning. My goal is for my son and I to make memories and travel together in out new to us PUP!
Just got back from our first outing in our 2002 Coleman Santa Fe. It's in pretty good condition but need to clean up the canvas. Will try out this method. This sounds much more cost effective then othersi have seen.
@@ItsPoppin hopefully the link doesn't get stripped out, but the pop up princess website has several blog posts on the topic, www.thepopupprincess.com/category/pop-up-camper-maintenance/. They have a bunch of different products they use and recommend, but they are all pretty pricey, and if you bought all of them it would be well over a hundred bucks. I bought an old pop up because I thought it was going to be economical.
I'm so appreciative of your channel and content. My canvas is a hot mess. I'm going to try to employ some of these steps to my 93 Jayco. There are so many rips and tears and the canvas itself is hard and stiff with dirt like no one ever cleaned it and cared for it. If I ever manage to get it clean, it will be a miracle. I did have one question, there are gaps in the canvas where it is not attached to the door frame anymore. Any tips on closing those gaps? I really don't want any critters gettin in. Going on our maiden voyage this weekend, so wish us luck!
do you have a video of cleaning the actual box. I have inherited a Palamino pop up and it looks a bit like yours. It is quite dirty inside and I am going to follow your instructions on how to make it nice again. I live in Canada so hope I can get the cleaning things I need
can you provide a list of all the materials and cleaning solutions you used in this video? that would be very helpful as I am cleaning up and repairing a rockwood popup I recently purchased for $800. Thanks your video are awesome.
Hola!! Desde Chile 🇨🇱. Puedes hacer una lista de los productos que usas para limpiar y proteger tu pop up para ver la posibilidad de conseguirlos en Chile o por Amazon.?? Saludos y muy buen canal.
Hey, thanks for the videos. We have owned two hard sided campers. We just bought a 2012 Rockwood freedom offroad. There was a leak at the fan. That caused some staining and of course mildew. I used you advice and really like the results. My question is what should our expectations be? Still have some stains. Much better than it was. Thanks again.
Our first camper, a 1999 Jayco Heritage Cascade, had some pretty bad staining of the canvas - especially on the roof part of the canvas. And by pretty bad, I mean it was bad. Fortunately and unfortunately, the mold and mildew remover removed a significant amount of the staining; however, it did leave a slight amount of staining. The remaining stain actually had a bit of a pink hue to it and we were never able to completely remove it. You might be experiencing the same thing.
I purchased these: www.amazon.com/dp/B07R15WZN2?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I do wish they were a little warmer, more in the 4000-5000k range, but they're plenty bright and a good price.
Brand new to pop up camping. Just bought a used fleetwood taos for the wife and me. Have you ever tried a small steamer to clean the canvas and interior surfaces?
@@ItsPoppin Wow! great response time! Really appreciate your videos. Just picked up the camper last week and can't wait for the snow to melt so I can get inside and putter around.
I have a Pop up and canvas don't leak but have mold so my question is where do I find protective cleaner and star bright also would like some gorilla tape
Really enjoy your videos. Thank you for putting in the time. I'm working my way through a refresh on a 2014 Starcraft Comet 3611HW. Question for you that is more realated to your Starcraft - did you re-waterproof the canvas on it with the Starbrite waterproofer? If so, did you use the product on the bunk end roofs? The Starbrite waterproofer says not to use it on laminated or backed material. Curious your thoughts? Thank you and happy camping!
Thanks! I'm pretty sure we re-waterproofed the bunk ends after we cleaned them. You really only need to re-waterproof the true canvas material and not the vinyl, which is what the top of bunks ends are - at least on our '08. Might not hurt to do a waterproof test at home before you head out.
Recently purchased a 2005 StarCraft. We want to clean the exterior canvas since we have redone the inside. Watching your videos have been such fun and very inspiring. With the exterior after cleaning is the protect all all one needs to waterprrof/repell water or should we use something additional ? Thanks Jennifer and Ginger
Yes, so the protect all is great for reconditioning the vinyl parts of the "canvas," and should be all that's needed as its inherently waterproof. However, if you cleaned any of the canvas parts of the "canvas," I would consider re-waterproofing those.
Hello, I’m struggling with identifying if my material is canvas or vinyl?? I’ve called Jayco and they can’t even tell me 😞 Jayco series 1007 2016 is what I have. Sigh. I thought it was vinyl because it feels plasticy. Not sure.
@@ItsPoppinawesome thanks. Gonna be a rainy day tomorrow so it'll be a good day to get all these cleaning supplies and caulk, etc. 🤗 Binging your videos definitely prepared me for so much. I'm so grateful.
