About us:
We're Jack & Megan, and in late 2020 we sold our belongings and packed our lives into our 2005 Toyota Troop Carrier to travel Australia. Our original plan was to complete a full lap of Australia and return home to Perth to resume our 'normal' lives. We decided we wanted to document our lap for the future and began sharing weekly travel vlogs of our life on the road and fell in love vlogging, filmmaking and sharing our lives with you. We completed our first lap and couldn't imagine living any other way so we decided to continue travelling and calling the Troopy home. We have gone on some crazy adventures since then and it is all thanks to you tuning in to join us every week.

Jack your right about the Toyota’s comfortable driving, my 100 series was still to this day the most comfortable vehicle I’ve owned or driven. I’ve owned BMW’s, Mercedes, and a Rolls at one time and the 100 series cruiser was by far the most comfortable imho. I believe the weight and capable suspension is the reason. The build is looking fantastic, can’t wait to see it finished……no pressure!

I always look forward to your weekly posts on this build. I have a formula for calculating the gas strut you need for lifting your bed (we recently upgraded our gas strut because of a new heavier mattress). It is weight (bed base, mattress, doona, sheets etc) x 5.5 x length of bed (from hinge to edge of bed frame) / distance of gas strut anchor point to hinge. Divide answer by 2 to get how many Newtons (N) each gas strut should be. For example our bed was 90kg x 5.5 x 1560mm long / 540mm ( from hinge to anchor point on bed frame) = 1430. Divide by 2 we needed 700 N gas struts. The closer you mount your gas strut to the hinge the stronger your gas strut needs to be. The further out you mount it the weaker it needs to be. Your anchor point of the gas strut to the bed frame is the only thing you can vary now to get it right (given your bed frame is now made and mattress purchased).

Hi guys, I’ve been camping one way or another for over 40 years and I’ve only had two instances where we’ve moved because of a bad vibe about a place and I’ve never had any trouble with people. Maybe being a bus driver for 30 years made me better at communicating with strangers. Always go with your gut, both of you. If just one person is uncomfortable with an area then take it as a warning and move. It’s actually nice to know you bicker a bit because you don’t show it on camera (which is a good thing) and also my wife and I do too but what’s important is that at the end of the day you’re still best friends. I’m so happy you love the new to you Cruiser, it certainly has everything you guys need and all the extras would have been a fraction of the cost if you had purchased them yourself. We have a 2020 Sahara and it’s like driving an armchair. We’re in Canberra so if you do come over to see the high country it would be nice to meet you both and if you visit Canberra we could help you do the grand tour. Cheers, Stuart & Leanne. Ps, congrats on 50k + subscribers.

I’m only 4mins in but I got excited because I saw that beautiful lounge again. I think it s stunning and adds such a vibe. Oh and Jack I agree, it doesn’t get much more Aussie than that. 😂 I love the beautiful scenic videos you make when you travel & the chatty relaxed videos so I say do whatever is comfortable and easiest for you guys
@realfamilyman
@realfamilyman 4 месяца назад
Different folks for different strokes lol. I lived in a Viscount for a year and that lounge was awful. First the seat is too low making your knees splay apart (I'm 5'7" so it's even worse for taller people) which soon makes your hips ache. It's ok for 20 minutes sitting upright to eat a meal, but any longer - ugh - and that was when I was only 21. (Older people would feel it more.) Second, with the vinyl at least, it sticks to you making standing up a pain because it "holds you down", makes you sweat, and just feels "yuck" against your skin anytime except peak of winter. No matter how clean you know it is, it feels dirty/sweaty/sticky/slimy like a vinyl seat in a diner that never gets any soap - just wiped with a wet chux and some cleaning product that's been wiping food and oil off every table for the last 3 months. Third the seat cushions squash completely flat so is like sitting on a flat board or a metal train station bench. Four, the back is perfectly upright/straight with little padding which = uncomfortable and soon makes your back ache. You want to arch your back so your shoulders are further back than your tailbone but never can. I had 3 pillows behind me to try and get a comfortable back arch and I was always fighting to keep them in the right spot. (Two down low, one on top of those first two.) It's also natural to want to tilt your head back when watching TV, but the back of your head wants to rest on the flat hard wall behind you. It's irritating, so you wind up sitting upright all the time, which kind of makes your head further forward than your shoulders like a "z" turkey neck. Everything about it is uncomfortable unless it's for 20 minutes, sitting upright, and leaning forward like when eating a meal - but it makes for a terrible lounge. I loved living in the caravan (two newlyweds, always bumping into each other) but detested that lounge, lol. This is all from memory so I'm sure I've missed more that I hated about it, but the final thing I remember is the front slope below your knees isn't angled back/in enough. So the back of your heels hits the lower face, which means your feet sit more forward than feels natural/comfortable. (Same thing with all the caravan furniture really, today the still make it straight into the floor at 90 degrees, with no toe space like a house has below the kitchen sink and cupboards. It makes you stand further back from the sink/oven/bench so whatever you're doing you feel like you're extending your arms unnaturally or falling forward. Personally I think caravans and motorhomes waste so much space by having the bed permanently down. I would raise the bed into the roof using 4x electric actuators or just a winch operated by a cordless drill or motor, or just by hand - and have a nice comfortable lounge underneath that better sculpts to your back so your hips are more forward, shoulders back, and padding behind the head. (So when the bed is down it barely touches the top of the lounge cushions.) The bed mattress would be just forward of the back of the lounge, so when the bed is down the back of the lounge becomes the padded bedhead AND a back rest when sitting up in bed. During the day the bed is raised to the roof, and when sitting on the lounge underneath you don't need the full headroom of the caravan anyway. You have to duck a bit to sit on the lounge, but once seated there is ample headroom and you're on nice comfortable lounge seats you can sit on for hours. Fit a removable table as well and you've now combined 3 areas (lounge, bed, dining) into one saving heaps of room compared to the layout of most caravans and motorhomes. The table could also be made to drop down from underneath the bed. Just forward of the bed/lounge make a couple more seats to do away with the original 2+1 or 3+1 orange vinyl one (no-one except toddlers can sit in the corner space) in case someone wants to lie on the bed during the day. That way a second person or two still have seats when the bed is down covering the lounge. Which also gives more seats that the original orange one when the bed is up. Getting rid of the orange thing (I think 75% were orange and 25% were dark green lol) also frees up more room to have a larger bathroom space, or longer kitchen bench, a wardrobe, etc.

Happy Easter guys. Van is coming along beautifully. Hey make sure that door to van is secured well facing in the forward direction, learn from my mistake…. Old van doors and keys & latches can come open… caravan becomes a parachute on highway… I went through a tank of fuel in about 50 kms when I first purchased my old van before I worked out what the hell was going on!! Maybe it had gold bars stashed under the bed 🤣 Every time I stopped the door closed, so it took awhile to figure it out! Funny, but not funny when stranded in outback!!

I'm not sure about your choice of flooring. It won't give any insulation from cold and it means sweeping and washing. I did my old Jayco with rubber backed water proof matting from bunnings. gives insulation from floor cold, can be washed or use a battery operated vacuum cleaner. But it's personal choice what you use.

Probably not a great idea having a door that opens to the front of the van. If it comes open while towing at highway speeds for any reason - likely the wind will tear it off its hinges and you will lose it completely if you don’t notice as it happens. If you hinge to the front and it comes open, the wind pressure will keep it closed & you don’t lose your door.
