In this episode we motor the catamaran over to Salt Ponds Marina to pick up the rest of our stuff and make some final upgrades. This also gave us a chance to see what it'll be like out on the water when it's really cold and if there is anything else we think we may need. Salt Ponds Marina is 2 hours away in the direction we're headed so it'll be less time to cross The Chesapeake Bay when we take off tomorrow.

As a professional captain here is some advice. 1. You should have kept the cat on the hard(dry land) to work on it. 2. You need a stronger more reliable engine, like a 35-40hp. 3. You should have engine steering and throttle controlled by hydraulic not the pvc. 4. Your engine should propel directly forward while you steer the boat with its intended dual rudder system. 5. basic NAV lights red/green/white. 6 get an anchor with at least 100’ chain and another 50’ line for the inter-coastal. 7. Get a VHF radio. 8. You both should take a boating class. 9. You should research what states require any minimum boat operating licensing to operate in the waters. I live in Jupiter Florida and the Florida water police are going to have a field day with you. 10. Even the inter coastal can be dangerous because other people. 11. I really think you should put off the Florida trip 1-2 months so you can have your engine refreshed and you learn some more. Your last statement “watch as we go to Florida with only 5 days experience” is actually very uncool. You could put other people at risk and your lives are worth more than a RU-vid video. And your boat looks like a train wreck, many people head south in winter on boats in your condition and towns don’t want them so the water police and coast guard are going to give you a very hard time. If they feel your boat isn’t seaworthy or you aren’t aware of navigation rules they can dock you permanently. Honestly you should have kept the boat on the hard and kept working on it, you are jumping way to far ahead.

Glad you have posted this update addressing points people made regarding masts and radios. I've only just realised just how far your mammoth journey is! Each to there own madness but I wouldn't brave a mile with that little engine let alone a thousand - if for no other reason than the noise. Hope you stumble upon something bigger and more reliable but keep the little one is just a backup. Good luck on your journey, I think your crazy - in both senses.

@@MegaDirtyberty It's the responsibility of all boaters to do so in a safe and responsible manner. If you don't have the funds available for basic safety equipment then you can't afford the boat. That simple. Boating without nav lights or a horn makes you a hazard. Heading out without a bilge pump or life jackets risks the life of the crew, the vessel and anyone who might be roped into trying to rescue them if the worst happens. Not having an anchor means you're at the whim of wind and current if your motor fails, again putting others at risk. People calling them out on this stuff is not moaning. They're on the water with a dodgy boat, no safety equipment and seemingly no basic seamanship knowledge (e.g. channel markers). That makes them a serious risk to themselves and others.
@jbradin6312
@jbradin6312 4 года назад
You need to install or fix rudders. This way you can setup a simple pulley system against the cabin bulkhead. Now you can see where you are going and you will have more control of the boat. Also please setup an anchor. Good luck. If you get by Southport, NC and need help let me know.

Ya will feel more homey when paint done. Moooooood lighting nice. Say in ths future you could add some plywood and fiberglass if in if you dont like the trampoline would give you a spot for some lawn chairs or so. Hay I'm no expert. Love you guys keep up awesome job you doing
@bubbafudpucker397

If the trampoline was replaced with a solid deck, the boat could flip super easy in big wind and waves.

If you used cheap paracord for the trampoline, please note that it is probably not all that stable to UV light. When I have some in the back of my truck, it lasts less than a year.

I like watching your videos and I think that you are doing well, also you do need a little bigger motor to power the boat. Bye the way were are the two of what state
@bhabigbig2391
@bhabigbig2391 4 года назад
That's crazy, I'd have hydraulic steering and a wheel in the cabin w/electric throttle controls for forward and reverse, remember when docking a boat steers from the rear, when sitting at the dock if you turn into the dock and goose it a little in forward the stern will kick out away from the dock allowing you to then back away from the dock.
@9to5less
@9to5less 4 года назад
Thanks for the tip! Reverse is pretty tough with this setup and transom. The motor just wants to fly off lol
@bhabigbig2391
@bhabigbig2391 4 года назад
@@9to5less Make sure you have a safety chain on it so if it jumps off it won't go to Davy Jones locker.
@9to5less
@9to5less 4 года назад
We have a cable lock on it going through the transom and yesterday I found the safety kill switch cord so I’ll put that on too so it’ll cut the motor off before it cuts through one of the hulls or something. Thanks for the tip!!!

Love your videos and your attitude. I’m a bit scared for you all with the little 15 hp. I can a 16 ft inflatable and it had a 25hp on it. I wish I had kept it. I would have given it to you all. Please be safe out there. The water/ocean is no place to play around. Things turn very quickly. Safe travels and get yourself a personal eperb if you can. Check West Marine, Bass pro Shop or Boat Owner’s warehouse, it’s about $250-270. Also get a cheap inflatable boat and keep it inflated and ready to go. Sorry, that all I have is suggestion.

Have you considered remote controls for the outboard? Keeps you reaching overboard and thus making life easier?

I understand limited funds, but I recommend a shopping list and a written plan for repairs and upgrades. First thing is go get some bubble wrap to insulate your windows with. Should have bought a camp heater that does not give off carbon monoxide for your heater - that heater can kill you. You need a reliable GPS, compass, and a few charts. A marine radio would be nice. Gonna need a few 5 gallon gas cans since all you have is an outboard now. A Coleman stove will come in handy even if you are just cooking dry food (Ramen noodles, etc), tea or coffee. Set up a place outside to cook. The heat from the stove is nice inside, but propane gives off carbon monoxide and water vapor. The water vapor will cause mold and mildew. They make adapters to refill the little stove bottle from your big propane tank saving you money on buying the little bottles. Looking forward to seeing the trip... A heater won't be a big deal in Florida, so just use what you have for now but keep in mind the carbon monoxide problem... Bon Voyage. :)

Great suggestions from everyone. Your not taking the Catamaran? Are you towing it with the house boat? I was wondering about Navigation lights? I know you probably plan on traveling by light of day only. But you never know what may happen on a long trip.. Good luck please be safe.

Should have rigged up a steering wheel, nearly every speed boat of that size has one. Also a decent bilge pump and new battery seeing as the hull patch started lifting.
