I remember someone using the first Hellboy as an example of the trope of solidifying a morally ambiguous character's "goodness" by having them save a cat. I found this hilarious because Hellboy saving the box of kittens stuck out to me as a particularly dehumanizing moment because he clearly has more respect for the lives of the kittens then many of the human characters.

@Dexter Morgan Nothing makeup, stunts and special effects can't solve. Most of Del Toro's Hellboy action scenes were that way, but nowadays it could look much better as back then technology was a bit limited and now it looks dated.

Dexter Morgan if Ron thinks he can still do it, he can. He looks no different now than he did 10 years ago. And as always he would also be supported by stand ins, stunt doubles and heavy make up. But it doesn't matter now. Hellboy is officially dead thanks to the new terrible movie. Fuck Hollywood.

I love Myers specially because he’s human. I always saw him as the connection of Hellboy with the outside, someone who hasn’t been in the organization too long and could show him how to interact with people who weren’t just focused on killing other monsters. He’s clumsy but empathetic, the only character that kept Hellboy in contact with his “human” side. I missed him in the sequel. Guillermo’s works will always be my favorite. From Cronos to Pan’s Labyrinth, he managed to give every movie something that’s only his.

Thank you so much for covering these!! I grew up on these movies, as a half-Mexican kid with gothic leanings and a fascination with the macabre, I immediately connected to them and Del Toro's voice. The sheer style in them and absolute heart that he put in opened the door for me to the rest of his movies and got me more into less mainstream comics like Hellboy and really helped me to find other stuff in the horror genre like cosmic and romantic horror that stood out above the schlock. My dad and I were pretty alienated from a lot of Latinx culture because of where we moved to but this was something we could cling to and bond over and these movies hold such a special place in my heart to this day. He's 5 years passed now and every year on his birthday, I watch Golden Army again and still can't help but grinning at that "Can't Smile Without You" scene, albeit with a few bittersweet tears now. Both Hellboy films are still a great watch for me and it's what got me into reading the comics. The dark mythology elements really sold me when I first watched the first film on the big screen back in 2004. I even got to meet Mike Mignola about 5 or 6 years ago at a local comic con after getting my copy of Seed of Destruction signed and he was a genuinely amazing guy to talk to. For favorite Guillermo Del Torro film, it's really a hard pick because I am a sucker for his production value and creature designs, but...The Shape of Water happens to be my favorite due to my love of human/monster realtionships (and REAL monsters, not just the usual vampires and werewolves) and how he made that unbelievable relationship so REAL. It holds sentimental value to me too because of it being connected to experiencing it with one my best friends. He won preview screening tickets for me as a late birthday/Christmas present and when he went to last year's local comic con when I was terribly ill, he met Doug Jones (same character actor for Abe Sapien and The Creature) in person and got the film's artbook signed for me as a get well present!

I loved The golden army, The world building really drew me in and left me really wanting to explore more of it. It really is sad that I will never get to see any of it ever again. The creatures were fantastic (literally), Ron Perlman really is Hellboy and the interactions between human and "monster" felt believable, the monsters displaying more humanity than the humans ever do, I guess that was pretty on the nose but still, I enjoyed it. First one is OK too.

I Absolutely loved the Del Toro Hellboy movies and wish that they had been able to continue on from there. The characters were enchanting and beautifully portrayed, some of the story left me theorizing about backstories that were never blatantly stated, and thinking about the depth to the world we had only glimpsed a part of. I own them both on DVD and they are still a regularly watched pair in my home.

Guillermo & his team really nailed the style and visuals. Everything about the comics' imagery is ludicrous to realise in live action (just look at him!), but the mix of off proportions and bold colours in the character design really works. Everything, from the dialogue to the movement, is ever so slightly over born and exaggerated, but still grounded in some kind of believable reality with a cohesive design connecting all the environments and characters. It's stunning that he & the team managed to make it work together so well. The story was so so, but it is such a beautiful film.

Heartful, imaginative and fun. I didn't realise it until much later, but the Del Toro Hellboy films really shaped a lot of my modern day tastes.

I really enjoyed the Del Toro take on Hellboy. Admittedly I’ve never read any of the comic books and knew nothing about the mythology, I was still able to really get into it.

Hellboy is definitely one of my favorite memories from my childhood. I used to watch these movies all the time. The movies also got me into the comics of Hellboy, which I might have never discovered otherwise. I will always remember these movies fondly.

Couldn't think of a much better director than Del Toro for a movie adaption such as Hellboy. What a perfect setting for him to splash around that deranged aesthetic in a relatively light-hearted way. I'm a sucker for macabre beauty and no one encapsulates it on film quite the way he does.

Honestly, I just love that balance between humor, horror, and fantasy that Hellboy has and Del Toro is perfect with doing this. These two movies are one of my favorites.

One of the reasons I love movies like Hellboy and Pacific Rim is that even when they’re not particularly cerebral they still feel like they’re crafted with love and care like works of art. I love the way he uses color in storytelling.

Hellboy for me is the panultimate 2000s superhero franchise. It's the secret society of monster hunters thing that was popular in that era. Men in black, blade, X men, league of extraordinary gentlemen, van helsing, the matrix ECT. It feels so 2000s which is why I love it it's like a time capsule.

I really enjoyed both HellBoy movies. Had never heard of him when the first one came out, but I liked. I watched it because Selma Blair is the most beautiful woman that's ever walked our Earth, and I've watched everything she's ever done. Including HellBoys' 1 and 2. Fun movies.

Thanks to del Toro, I was slowly introduced into horror and now, I'm a hard core fan. I started with "Hellboy," then saw "Hellboy II," and then moved onto seeing "Pan's Labyrinth" (I *still* can't watch the scene with the rabbit hunters and the bottle Dx ) and the "Blade" movies (even though he only worked on II). My plans are to see "The Devil's Backbone," "The Orphanage," and "Crimson Peak" at some point, as I want to see more of his horror works and see how they look. Also, he was a part of a great movie, that has Ron Perlman voice acting, called, "The Book of Life." It's such a gorgeous film and has a unique style, so even though it's a 'family friendly' movie, I highly suggest that it's watched at least one time. : )

I have no desire to sit through another superhero movie for the rest of my life, and I would have paid double the price of admission to see del Toro's intended third film in theaters. Who the hell thought the 2019 film was a better idea?

I love the two hellboy films of Guillermo del toro! I love Guillermo del toro, he’s one of my favorite directors! I still haven’t seen the reboot but I heard it’s bad and also the movie theaters already took it down. I still wish Guillermo del toro made his final hellboy film. Also I just subscribed to your channel and gave a like, great video and will watch more of your videos bro.

Del Toro's Hellboy films are some of my favorites of all time and I wish it got more recognition and the proper conclusion it was leading up to. As for the new film, I can't say I'm that exited for it because of the trailer released a couple months ago, but I still want to like it because Hellboy

I think the biggest glaring difference between Del Toro's adaptation and the 2019 mess, is that the first film's heart and soul is the connections between the characters. They know and care about each other, while still having conflict. No one knows each other in the new film, and we are shown no loving connections- and it clumsily tries to super-impose emotions over a loveless dynamic. Plus- I did such a face-palm when the 2019 film exposits Hellboy's origins....to Hellboy....halfway through the film......Did he think he came from a Stork until he was 70? How would he not know this shit.

Hellboy 2 was literally the first time I’d ever seen Northern Ireland in a big blockbuster movie, and it was SO localised- the Giant’s Causeway is 2 minutes from where I grew up; when I 10 years old that was the coolest shit ever
