I feel like I should mention that Neville can hardly be blamed for his actions. It isn't just that he wasn't willing to consider the idea of the vampires being civilized themselves, up until the ending, he had never even seen any rational vampire. The only ones he had ever encountered were either asleep or part of the horde that pestered him from outside his house every night. These ones, while still intelligent enough to speak and attempt strategies like seduction, were so aggressive that they would never have formed a society.

The Will Smith movie completely turns the message of the book on its head. Every new movie became less accurate and meaningful than the last because Hollywood prefers that its audience does not think about profound issues such as the line between good and evil. Thats why Marvel movies are so successful now because they provide a black and white picture of good and evil. (Also probably why so many SW fans hated TLJ).

I don’t even *need* to say that the old ending is better than the official one, and that the test audiences who ended up getting it ultimately changed were just.....wrong for the 2007 adaptation.
@dajosh42069
@dajosh42069 4 года назад
The original ending DOES speak to the underlying tones, and message that the book/earlier adaptations of the movie(s) are intended to convey. At the point/In the scene where he exits the locked room with the female "dark-seeker", taking with him no discernible means of defense or escape available.. the viewer is made immediately to feel the very *real* sense of danger he's opted to put himself into in order to make, what he feels is, the correct moral choice. We *IMMEDIATELY* get the sense that he's mere moments from death. Especially after the female dark-seeker is returned to her -boyfriend- significant other+, the assumed implication is simply that they (dark-seekers) will no longer be held back, and will attack and kill him. We're even shown a glimpse of his "Failure to Cure" wall, and the countless photos taken of the failed test subjects.. Yet ANOTHER reason for the dark-seekers to want to tear him apart.... But.. they don't. They essentially are happy to follow the lead of the alpha.. Implying that it is in fact the creatures are perhaps more human then the actual human himself.

@@purplehaze2358 some of my favorite films are niche films. Like Bladerunner 2049. I like slow paced films that are character driven. I dont like when characters have to tell me things, I want them to *show* me. I appreciate subtlety. A lot of people dont have the patience to sit and watch a 3 and a half hr movie, especially if it's slow paced. And they will say it's bad if there isnt action or sex for a whole hour. That's honestly the majority of people. Of course not in this comment section because people that watch film critic type reviews usually have a deeper appreciation for writing/film. But yeah TLDR what's good for everyone/majority usually isnt the best written cause most moviegoers are casual.

I rewatched this movie so much as a kid. I really never picked up on the whole “Man is the real Monster” thing. I just really loved the survival aspect of it all. It was kind of a budding survivalist fantasy. Scavenging a deserted and eerily quiet cityscape. Avoiding the dark and only moving during the day. Fortifying your home and rigging all sorts of traps and defense systems. So many zombie shows and movies focus on the human character drama and push that other people are the real enemy, not the zombies (I.e. The Walking Dead). But I actually really liked how the conflict in this movie was actually between one man and the mutant vampire zombies around him. The only other humans in the plot are actually friendly, and there is barely any dialogue. Mostly action and visual storytelling. It was a really cool movie in my eyes.

While the movies projected large scale global social issues of their time, I think the book was more of an intimate statement about the pressure to conform to conservative 1950's standards, a time when something as simple as Elvis' gyrating hips was seen as provocative. I'd argue that in the book Neville is still the good guy, right through until the end. A relate-able character struggling with stress, depression, anxiety, and the pressure to simply give in to the horde that surrounds his house nightly. Rather than seeing him as the villain for seeking out vampire nests during the day, and testing out experimental cures on unwilling subjects, I'd argue that it's an example of stoicism - staying the course despite the consequences. I've always viewed the books ending as the ultimate rejection of conforming to social norms, an ending that would have been equally suited to A Clockwork Orange if Alex were given the opportunity.
@theMoporter
@theMoporter 2 года назад
See, that's why I'd argue the opposite point: his viewpoint is inherently conservative. He wants to return things to how they used to be and impose it on everyone. He doesn't believe they should have that choice because their thoughts and feelings aren't worthy of consideration. He will murder and torture them if he thinks it will make them "normal" (like some kind of therapy, to convert them) . That's not how hippies ever acted. That's how extremist conservatives act. The premise under this reading is that the hippies won, and this is the self-aggrandising narrative the old guard tells himself to excuse his behaviours. Think about it - who imprisoned people they deemed a lower type of person, tortured them, experimented on them, murdered them for daring to care about their crimes? It wasn't radical progressives. It was the institutions. Neville is what happens when you refuse to reexamine your worldview, when it's clear to everyone else that your "superior" race that you claim is the sole civilised people is disproven.

I really enjoyed the loneliness aspect of the Will Smith movie. His dog is the only thing keeping him sane in a completely dead city, minus the infected that roam the streets at night. After the dog dies what little sanity he had left died with it. I really think a video game based on the Will Smith movie would be really interesting. I've always wanted to explore a dead city like that, going into what was once people's homes and seeing their lives based on their belongings.

I am legend is an amazing book. I have a copy back home. again, it's amazing. Neville is a hard character to root against, we see him try very hard to just survive and how much willpower it takes from him. How his past haunts him, how he has to deal with several of them at his door teasing him every night... the dog chapter is specially heartbreaking, because of how much effort he puts into making the dog trust him, but in the end it was too late and the only company he had, after being alone for a long time, is gone in the turn of a page. this is one thing that was handled really well in the Will Smith movie imo. Him singing to his dog while she's turning and he can't do anything to stop really brings out the onion cutting ninjas you know? Never watched the other 2 adaptations, so I can't comment on them.

I actually liked the theatrical ending of 'I Am Legend' better than the directors cut version. I thought him killing himself was more fitting for the depression slide he was going on, since he had found the cure but lost everything he loved, there was no point in living any more. I understand the second ending is deeper, but I find it very out of place when the film (in my eyes) was about Robert as a person going through the loss of being immune and alone, just trying his best because no one else could. Plus he felt he had to give back to the world for letting things get as bad as they did, so him sacrificing himself is a bitter sweet ending.

This is SUCH a great video!!! These cinematic analyzations are my favorite thing ever By the way,,, that directors cut was so beautiful, I remember being amazing by the tragic beauty of this film as an 8/9 y/o when it came out in 2008, but it would’ve so much much more of a film if “Hollywood” whoever they are would’ve just let the director do his job.
