We need more SD on Blu-ray (hold the pitchforks for the end)

Standard definition on a high definition disc format sounds counter intuitive, but it’s something we should honestly utilize more. Reality is there is tons of shows that will never see the light of day in high definition so Blu-ray Disc can offer some of the best quality and user experience out of the standard definition.

Myself i don't have any Problems with this, in case of prices it's actually a great opportunity, too! In my collection there is "Batman - the animated series" and "murder she wrote" as SD in BR... Especially "murder she wrote" was great in this way for me to get! I missed the DVDs who where also splitted in two boxes of every season over here. Now i have could paid 20€ (23$) for every of this 24 boxes on a secondary market, but got a 12-BR-box for 50€ (55$)... And now it's one of my gems!!! Great Video, thank you!!!

Intriguing topic. I did even know this was being done. Larger disc capacity means better quality, if mastered correctly of course. I’m in.

I would love every TV show that wasn't shot on film or digital HD to be released as SD on BD so that we don't have to swap so many discs.

If you don't like swapping your disc's consider ripping your content to a hard drive.

You are correct here. With SD on HD episodes don't have to be so compressed and the ability to have higher quality audio tracks.

I bought a couple SD on BD shows, like Robocop, the TV series, and Sliders in a German digibook. But I still prefer separate season packaging, and especially those beautiful digipacks, like Buffy. I wouldn't want it all be stuffed in one thin box. A long important TV series must take up an appropriate amount of shelf space and look awesome on it! I even transfer BDs into DVD season packaging, when possible, like with Battlestar Galactica, which all was released initially in digipacks, and Charmed, which had a nice large Book for the whole series.

@@LennyNero2019 Part of me agrees and my shelves don’t haha. I have hundreds of shows on DVD and they take up sooooo much room…especially the older shows and releases. Me a couple years ago always wanted all the separate bulky seasons, but me now would appreciate some smaller packaging so I can fit more shows. The tv collection is kinda large at this point. I do have tons of large great sets I’d never get rid of though.

@@timtalkstalkies Oh I know, I've ran out of space like 12 years ago, but I just gave up, decidingit will not stop or limit me. 😁 I currently need 27 large Billy bookcases, but only have 12, so half is in boxes... plan to free up a whole another room for them, 'cause I'm starting to forget what I even have. Remember those ADV releases of Farscape, 11 volumes for just the first season! Or initial Stargate SG-1, ten seasons of that take up two whole shelves by themselves. I also collect anime, and they were practically all released like that - 6-7 amarays each. 😵

I am game for releasing tv shows on Blu Ray in SD. As I mentioned below in another comment, I own the Region 2 Blu Ray pressing of The Real Ghostbusters from Turbine Media of Germany and I really enjoy watching it. Really hope America come around to this trend, since in many countries in the Western portion of Europe having SD on Blu Ray has proven to be quite popular with consumers.

@@timtalkstalkies the blu-ray release is great. You get the complete series on five Blu-ray discs, a lot of special features including making ofs, outtakes, interviews, commentaries on select episodes and more. You also have two viewing options; 16:9 and 4:3.

At this point, we're still lucky to have DVD. 📀 Flexibility is the key now. 📀 Being able to play DVD 📀 in laptops, DVD players, and tablets that play DVD 📀 is our last hope. 📀
@timtalkstalkies
@timtalkstalkies 2 месяца назад
That’s definitely a point for older equipment, but gotta be honest there isn’t a whole lot of DVD only equipment sold these days. Most laptops that even have disc drives are Blu-ray drives. I think the key is tons of people don’t realize they have Blu-ray capabilities in their house. Hundreds of millions of house have Blu-ray between game consoles, laptops, desktops, standalone devices, etc… DVD is still a great format, but it sells significantly more due to price and comfort level. Tons of people that CAN play Blu-ray still just pick DVD.

Totally agree. I like music stuff too. You have a concert and/or videos that were shot on video and can't really up cost effectively be 4K but the SOUND can be uncompressed. The Rolling Stones have done this with all of the concerts they have put out.
@timtalkstalkies

Concerts are a PERFECT use for this! It’s kinda crazy even newer concerts in HD how little we get on disc. It’s definitely a segment of the market that is neglected.

I was of the mindset years ago that I wanted everything on bluray and then everything on 4K I have transitioned my mindset to accept tv shows may not get a bluray edition so dvd would be acceptable. Having it on a BR disc would be better bc we would see less compression. Personally, I feel every successful tv show or movie should have a bluray, but the issue is if studios think they could make money on it I would be fine with SD copy on a BR disc if we aren't gonna get it in HD

Don't hate your idea. Remember liking Street Sharks and didn't know it had that SD on Blu-Ray release. Not a fan of the price thought at almost $40 if it's standard definition. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Hopefully they do some more like you mentioned. I remember really liking the Godzilla animated show too. Jackie Chan Chronicles would be cool too.

I think Street Sharks is that price more because it’s a tiny label releasing it. If the Warners and Sonys did it with older shows I think cost would be significantly lower.

I think there is an important point you missed. The issue with some of these shows is that HD masters literally do not exist. This was very common for animated shows in the 80s and 90s. Once they were put onto SD video for broadcast all the original elements were tossed. I don't know which shows specifically, but if that is not made clear people are still going to be confused about why there is no HD option. Now if you want to talk about something that is possible. AI could be used to clean them up and make them look HD. This is absolutely possible.
@LennyNero2019
@LennyNero2019 2 месяца назад
No, not AI, maybe some simple animation shows, but definitely not live action - everything upscaled I've seen up to now looks horrible, wax museum alive, and everyone upscaling stuff AND liking it is a moron - I don't mind saying.

Yeah I know tons of shows don’t have any originals to even work off…Lots of shows will never have HD for one reason or another. Some do have HD masters even and they’ll still never see life in HD outside digital and streaming.

I always want any movie or tv show in the best format I can get it in. I will settle for dvd if that is the best I can do, hell I have a dvd coming from amazon today. I just want it to look as good as reasonably possible. I wonder if production costs would maybe even out a little bit since it would take fewer discs for collections. I'm all for it if it means I can get a slightly better looking copy of The Brain That Wouldn't Die or whatever.

I have no problem with releasing some of these TV shows that are only available in SD on BluRay-just as long as it’s not Mill Creek doing it. They really cheap out on the number of discs and packaging leaving the buyer with a really poor quality product. If these shows were released on a fair number of discs “so they have room to breathe,” as you have stated Tim, I would definitely buy it. But thus far, I have seen no indication that Mill Creek will do this. One just has to look at their recent releases to see that they’ll jam as many episodes onto a disc as they can to save on the cost of one of two more BluRay discs. It’s as if using a couple more discs will bankrupt them…😢

@@timtalkstalkies it’s a great idea for us but I reckon the non-collector types won’t go for it and/or get confused. We’re in a strange limbo period at the moment. The growth in physical media is strong but the streaming platforms are still strong for the general audience. I think maybe if the collectors market continues to strengthen. But it may just be an added complication to the current market. But I’m sure these people listen to people like yourselves so there is hope.

I have tv series on Blu-rays that have been remastered on HD 2K or 4K. Like Battlestar Galactica or Lost In Space. But those are live action. I have Fist Of The North Star tv series on Blu-ray but the package states it's in standard definition not HD. I'm not sure but I think not even Japan has it on HD. Heck I think not even Mazinger-Z is on HD. Do the original elements of these cartoons still exist? I have all the Dragon Ball tv shows on Blu-ray and it says remastered. But is it in HD? I think a perfect example of why some shows are not remastered in HD is Star Trek:The Next Generation. Trekkies were clamoring for it on Blu-ray on HD so a years in the making set was produced. Remastered, special f/x had to be redone, extras, etc. a masterpiece boxed set. But when it came out Trekkies didn't buy it they didn't back it up!🤑 I heard this from a producer interviewed on you tube. And he said that producers and distributors learned a valuable lesson from this. That's why a lot of tv shows are still only on DVD. Interesting topic and cool video Tim!👉🙂👈
