The animation in sonic cd cutscenes is just ... BREATHTAKING... and the animation in the ova despite its limitations is still good... as you said sonic games whether the good or the bad have some charm to them (minus sonic 06 and sonic boom. Those games can go burn in hell for all I care). P.S: one of my favorite sonic games has to be sonic heroes... yeah it is very mixed in quality but when it's good it is really good

I had this on VHS and DVD. Still have the DVD. I remember the US Boxart was different for some reason with some promo art of Sonic imposed over a movie still that featured Tails and Knuckles with the tagline "scrape your knuckles, catch some Tails"

Thanks for doing this video, it's nice to see people give love to Sonic OVA and break it down from its music and art style you don't see a lot of people go into that much detail without people mocking him or something like that. OVA always had a special place in my heart as it captures how cool Sonic is and that what makes him he's cool and fun, most people have forgotten about that of what him special, to begin with.

It really hurts my heart that this movie may not be rereleased in any shape or form. This is the kind of thing that needs to be preserved in order to prevent it from being lost media. hopefully Sega comes around to it someday or someone with enough clout who's a fan of it can convince them.

Not enough people are a fan of the OVA design, I freakin’ love it with my all heart. Classic was fine how he was, a bit on the short side, but he had that signature attitude in all regions. Modern sonic had an great idea, what if we made sonic, but taller? My issue is that the quills look like they would make sonic fall backwards each time he would look up. But the OVA, the OVA took the personality of classic and the age of modern, and combined it.

I remember seeing the VHS when it first came out in a store called Coconuts. Not sure if I still have it, but it was such a shame it never became a full fledged show. I wish they would go back to this and give it a series.

My first memory of this OVA is asking for it when I was recovering from an eye operation, and my brother kindly got it for me. It was great! Sadly I don’t have the VHS anymore

Just FYI, Discotek Media has pretty much bought all the rights to all the most well known anime films and shows from the 80's and 90's that were released in America by those small independent companies. They have rights to titles from Streamline Pictures, Geneon (aka Pioneer Entertainment), ADV Films, Media Blasters, Central Park Media, and some others that I can't remember well. Shoot, earlier today I watched Twilight of the Cockroaches on Amazon Prime! I never got to see that film because I was always weirded out by the vhs rental box from my local Blockbuster Video when I was a kid renting Anime in the 90's and seeing them on the Scify Channel on the weekends.

My dad gave me a bootleg rip of the ADV release back in the early 2000s as a gift. Watched it so many times as a kid. If anyone should bring this back and renew the license for a rerelease it should be Discotek Media.

I'd agree this movie is like a Time Capsule for the 90's, an era I'm quite fond of. Aside from that, this kind of video format was really entertaining, sort of like something you would find on a radio program.

Oh man I watched this for the first time at a friend’s birthday party, and loved it. Glad you touched on the music - someone here on RU-vid recreated the songs from the movie that aren’t available, but it really is a shame they never released the tracks on a CD.

Hell yeah it's good. Great, even. I've always wished that the Sonic OVA was the only Sonic media in existence; an obscure anime with a cult following. Sonic's English voice is honestly amazing, and I wish that we got to see more adventures in the OVA universe with that voice actor.

I really wish that the sonic ova was a proper ongoing series, it honestly was really good even if it is silly and stupid at times. Also this OVA is not worth watching unless you watch the dub, because I don't think Sonic really works as a character without of hefty dose of campiness.

I was always sad that the OVA never tied back into the games or launched its own series, when I was a kid I thought that this was some precursor to a series too :/ - I'll always be sad that Sega never ran with this. I think it could have been a pretty popular series if it was tweaked a little.

my main issue with this "movie" is that it doesn't look like the Toei animation cutscene from sonic cd. Every time he runs he turn into these blue lines and dbz teleportation effects.

Damn, I didn't know Pierrot pioneered OVAs. Treasure Hunter Knuckles is way cooler than Gem Protector Knuckles. Why does he fly though!? 11:05 Sara looks like that one character from Digimon Adventure.

7:40 This is why I love the Sonic the Comic depiction of the character, he's like my head-canon Sonic. This new idea that Sonic is like, power of friendship + dad jokes is just so lame in comparison. Sonic needs to be a little rough around the edges, with the good being buried under attitude and a bit of 90's nihilism.

Love me the SONIC OVA! Honestly I’m a huge fan of sonic, but i just dont like modern sonic games. Besides the lack luster gameplay, the story and personification of modern sonic games are just.... plain bad. Sonic and the black knight was the last good sonic game.

Sonic CD's cinematics, as well as those for Sonic Mania, are *part of* the Sonic OVA storyline. Just sayin'... EDIT - include the Sonic Jam animations, too...

- I think Knuckles being an explorer is interesting but I think his contrast with Sonic is what makes him a fun character. Like his song in Adventure "Don't approve of him but got to trust him", he sees Sonic as someone who is irresponsible. I think Knuckles lives dutifully while Sonic lives just to do what he wants. - I think Adventures of Sonic is easily the most faithful of the American cartoons. Its this looney tunes thing but Sonic was made with the aesthetics of those characters and Mickey Mouse so I don't see it as a stretch. I think the version of Robotnik there is pretty accurate and I love the character designers idea behind the design: make him look like all those gross awful teachers you had growing up when drawing him". Also he is like the "epitome of self love" so despite being so repugnant he wants his face on everything because thats just the best possible result for everyone involved. - I think Diskotek or something could possibly rescue it? They did recently get Sonic X and planned to release it both subbed and dubbed seperate. I like to hope the OVA might get picked up one day. I would love it if we could eventually see something from behind the scenes, I imagine its all been thrown out by now though....

I honestly don't like this OVA it was a let down for me but I will say the Action/Fight Scenes are actually really cool, the designs and the animation are pretty good the problem I have with this OVA is the English Dub it's so bad and cringe worthy I just couldn't stand these voices especially Tails and Sara especially SARA! the voice actors did a poor job voicing these characters. The dialog is bad the things these characters say are just painful and corny for me and the story I didn't care for it at all it was forgettable. And there are characters new characters which I don't really care at all. And now the only thing I HATE about this OVA is Sara I HATE Sara she's probably the Worst Sonic Character Ever even worse than Princess Elise at least her voice isn't annoying despite terrible character development but Sara is so fucking annoying and spoiled she pissed me off a lot her voice is really annoying I just wanted to see Robotnik to kill Sara that's how much I despised her I like her design but her character is so terrible and painfully annoying she pisses me off. I wanted to like this OVA I like the idea of a Sonic OVA but this had a poorly execution to me this OVA was Bad just Bad it's a Disappointing Mess this is why I prefer Sonic Movie (2020) it was so great I loved it I was really surprised with that movie with its awesome action scenes, great CGI, really good story, great characters, great character development and awesome performances that didn't made me cringe unlike this crappy film this is just my opinion
