We need to acknowledge Israel-Gaza situation outside of violence, says author

Nathan Thrall, an author of a number of books on the Middle East, says the world is "doomed" to continue seeing the "horrible bloodshed" such as that in the Israel-Hamas conflict unless "deep injustices" there are acknowledged.
He tells the Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge the situation between Israel and Gaza should not just be addressed when there is an "eruption of violence".
While the debate over a one or two-state solution continues, "there is an ongoing reality that we should not accept", says Mr Thrall: "An ongoing reality that is leading to the kind of horrible bloodshed that we see right now."

This is my solution and comment: THE WORLD HAS TO STEP UP AND STOP BEING PATHETIC We have to IMPOSE a solution. No more of this. No more "two state solution" where Palestine is broken up into bits. The Palestinians get the north of the country. The Israelis get the south. There is a 1 mile-wide DMZ between the two - 12 months to relocate - after that, NO travel. Jerusalem is an independent none religiously affiliated micro state under the government of the UN. This will NEVER stop whilst its in the interests of regional politicians to keep it going.

People in the UK complain about immigrants crossing the Channel and threatening our culture. How would they feel if those immigrants had a right to throw people out of their homes and start living in them? That was what happened to the Palestinian people in 1948, and has continued ever since, with the immigrants carrying guns, building new houses, and preventing the original inhabitants from leading normal lives. That is what created the current conflict. Another way of looking at it is to compare the British response to the French resistance during WW2 with Palestinian resistance since Israel occupied their land. According to the German occupiers, French resistance fighters were terrorists. Did the British side with the occupiers or the ‘terrorists’? Anyone who talks about a two state solution now is either ignorant, or is deliberately trying to mislead, because Israel ruled out any possibility of Palestinians having their own land more than 40 years ago with “facts on the ground’, i.e. thousands of illegal settler colonists who are heavily armed and will not be easily moved.

There is a good documentary on this on Vox "How Palestinians were expelled from their homes". Unfortunately on both sides there are people that don't coincide an inch, Hamas is committed to the destruction of Israel and there are Israelis that claim the west bank is part of their ancestral rights and why former president Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by Israelis because he was prepared to concede land. The only way to change is for public opinion to shift by educating the west on the plight of the Palestinians, which hopefully would lead to more equitable treatment of Palestinians.

He made a lot of sense! As for Sophy's intro. It's not really that complicated though, and it certainly isn't "sudden". One side has all the power and enjoys the political support from the West. We're talking about decades of oppression - the violence is sadly a predictable result of the injustice.

@luk356o4, I think the problem is that in Israel enough leaders and people with enough power who do not want peace because they want all the territory Palestinians are in to become part of Israel manage to keep a peaceful settlement from happening. At the same time, leaders within the Palestinians who do not want to give up the goal of destroying Israel for what Israel has done to them manage to keep in power and prevent any peaceful settlement from happening. Since 1948 how many years has it been, and the leaders of both groups have always had enough drive to truly not want peace that no peace has happened. After this attack by Hamas, that pattern is likely to continue for decades to come.

I think there should temporarily disarm Gaza and outlaw the military, ban Hamas as both a political and military arm. At the same time give Gazans contol of water and electrcity, take down the walls and don't block the coasts. Eventually, Gaza can become a state of Israel or the West Bank OR they can be their own state. Opinions?

I think that as part of the larger picture we also need to consider the aspect of the cultural underpinnings which make ISIS Islamist behavior acceptable in some of the involved societies, that there is a deeply rooted tendency to develop sub-human ethics in the underlying culture where killing, raping and mutilating the dead is an acceptable form of glory. This makes engineering a trajectory for a truthful solution much more difficult than in e.g. Northern Ireland, although it is more comfortable to look the other way than to consider the ramifications of this deeply rooted cultural setting.
