There's a lot of hate for this character on the internet, and it's always really confused me. Especially considering that she is one of the most complex and well-developed characters of the main cast. I loved watching her journey from the rather selfish person who focused more on what was wrong with America than what was wrong with her own life to the fully, well-rounded, responsible person who cared deeply about those around her, and chose happiness for herself.
I think that, yes, partially this hate is fueled by sexism, but there are other factors about Diane that contribute to this. There are other female characters like her that get similar flack, because they are opinionated and confident. I think it's a mistake to dismiss these characters just for having these traits, and to not listen to what they have to say becase of that. I mean, not listening is Mr. Peanutbutter's ENTIRE problem. So don't repeat that, okay?
Thanks for watching, though. Seriously! Every view, like, and subscriber goes a long way to growing this channel into a community to discuss what they love about TV! So we appreciate it all- truly.

no you're so right. i actually had a really tough problem with understanding other peoples actions until this show. i sort of thought there was only one response to trauma, and only a few ways to be traumatized but you see issues covered in so many ways. for example, fertility. bojacks mother was a harsh one, because femininity was forced upon her before she was ready and couldn't handle the selfless act of parenting by herself. princess carolyn craves a child, only because it will make her feel whole. shes a great mom, but she did everything else first because her mother tried to force the "easy, womanly life" on her as well and in fact reduced her value to her wombs capabilities. diane simply doesn't want kids, in fact aborted when she got pregnant in the show and worried about her possibility of another if needed when she moved to houston because her family was disconnected from her and she was a black sheep, so she doesn't value that blood relationship. thats three separate women, from different generations, experiencing the same issue, and reacting in different ways. sarah lynns addiction vs. bojacks, todds relationship with his mother vs. bojack and his, so many similar issues with insanely different outcomes. it helped me realize that just because i dont react like others, or others don't react like me doesn't make any of us less of a human. i have a strong distrust of men because of my past. i can't blame a man in the same shoes, or how he reacts. only hope and try and help get better, if i so choose. it made the world more palatable, grey instead of black and white and i appreciate it a lot.

I like Diane, I was really surprised people hated her. She sucks sometimes, yeah, but very few people in the show don’t. I found her obsession with being a “good person”/right being at odds with her own wellbeing/effectiveness of said ideas to be relatable. She’s got that Chidi Good Place problem where she spends so much energy on the idea of a perfect way to be that she leaves the people in her life behind. Her childish moments of lashing out and not owning up to her own mistakes felt realistic. And even if she is aggressive and pedantic at points she tends to be right, she just doesn’t go about it in the right way or acknowledge she’s part of the problem. Also Mr Peanut Butters specific issue of ignoring problems and toxic positivity I think might be hard for people to pick up on. The effects of his actions tend to be more complex or come across as mature when it’s really about running from conflict. A big issue with their relationship was he wouldn’t make enough room for conflict. So he both would not get upset when he probably should have until it was too late and also any time Diane was upset it automatically made her look too angry.
@ipuffpixiedust

@Vatoxido Mysoginy in SOME aspects does play into the gaye, it's one thing for people to acknowledge her flaws, it's another for people to say they hate Diane, that she's the worst character, and she's the worst than Bojack, and we all know the last one is factually not true. I think a lot of people dislike Diane's acknowledgment of sexism or racism and etc that exists in the world. In those aspects, she's right a majority of the time, but in terms of her personal life, she makes a lot of mistakes and can be in the wrong.

@@Vatoxido there’s a massive difference between hating a character and not liking their actions for justified reasons. you can like and understand characters that are morally inexcusable, thats the case with bojack for the most part. literally open your eyes and name one genuine bojack fan that doesnt silmutaineously aknowledge he’s a bad person. and THATS the goddamn problem because these same people who love bojack but hate diane as a character are often giving moral reasons that they would have completely ignored with bojack who’d tick the exact same boxes if not worse. be so real right now, this isnt the first time gender centric hypocricy appeared in media. your so called sexism in this case applies the other way around, but yeah whatever helps you sleep at night honey.

This "person" [Edit:^ Vatoxido] (unsure if somehow a bot or somebody so miserable to do this) has commented this EXACT thing on at least several other "I don't get how people hate Diane" comments. As though anything she does remotely compares to the things BoJack does, like WHAT? Millions of people make similar mistakes to her than the comparatively small number of people who have hid their part in a preventable death like him. The writers of the show specifically pushed BoJack to be as close to the 'irredeemable' line as possible as a goal. Being *more* sympathetic to BoJack and not Diane is the opposite of what one would hope because that means people will more easily accept his actions (cuz protagonist, famous, horse?, whatever) than a realistically average person.

The reasons people hate Diane I don't see in her at all. How I viewed Diane was someone who had opinions and voiced them, someone who wanted to do better and have everyone she knew do better as well, someone who was trying to make sense of all the pain and give it some kind of meaning, and someone who had severe depression where it would spill into everything and she didn't know how to control it. Because half of BoJack fans are abusers/abuse apologists who “see themselves in BoJack”. I like that Diane dropped his sorry ass at the end. He degraded her sooooo many times then love bombed her when he was afraid she would leave him. She knew deep down she was associating with dangerous and unethical people. Once she was away from it, it eased her conscious. I also had to leave a dangerous and abusive social circle and realize my own short comings. If I hadn’t, I’d still be messing around with BoJacks. Diane’s story tells abusers that they are not entitled to relationships with people they mistreat.

One of the themes of the show is how trauma, especially childhood trauma, leads to dysfunctional adults. In some ways, I think Diane is a variation of Bojack. They have similar childhood traumas, both of them are the family scapegoats, neither of them got any love from their parents, and they deal with it in completely different ways. Most of the crappy things Bojack does comes from a lack of self-awareness and unwillingness to admit that he has trauma as evidenced when Diane tries to get him to talk about his childhood for his memoir, and he glosses over it and just said it was perfect. Diane on the other tries to write a memoir about her childhood and realizes it's not going to work. I get the impression that Bojack turns a blind eye to his bad behavior, like he just can't see it because already hates himself so his mind keeps it from him. Diane is hard on herself, but she also tries to be a good person by being activist. The problem with that is she's trying to do good things for a selfish reason.

I don't think it's so much people being awful humans that are misogynistic or "see themselves" in Bojack. That may be part of it, but I think it's simpler than that. The reason I always disliked her a bit is just because she's.. kinda an annoying character. We see characters we like because we follow them throughout the story, such as Bojack, or characters we think are just fun, like Mr. Peanutbutter, and yeah, they aren't good people. But I think it's similar to how a lot of people love villains. They're enjoyable characters to watch even though we know they're awful. Diane? Not nearly as enjoyable. She's strongly opinionated and while that's not a bad thing, I've found that to be annoying any time a character is, no matter the gender. She's also just more real and that is less fun to watch than someone who doesn't seem like they exist. I know people like her exist, and while I know people like Bojack exist, I've never met anybody like him. I've met Diane which makes her more annoying and dislikeable. I've never met a Bojack.

Diane is really annoying I don’t have a problem with her as a character since you need someone like her is your show is based in Hollywoo. She’s not a bad person but the way she carries herself and her personality makes her hard to root for due to how miserable she can be at times. Compare that to PC who is always positive even if it’s clearly fake it works, I never felt bad for Diane but PC I have it’s hard to root against her when all she does is help others even if it’s purely to fill the void of loneliness. There are people who really like Bojack because they see themselves in him but those are the people who’d love philbert’s character. Diane being human also hurts her case since there are talking animals, how can she compete with Mr.PB? I can’t relate her to my dog so it’s impossible for me to care about her more

I can only speak for myself, but the reason I don't like Diane is about consequences. People are always asking why some folks are more harsh towards Diane than they are towards Bojack when Bojack does way worse stuff during the series, and for me that's what it's about. Like, literally everything bad Bojack does in this show, he faces consequences for sooner or later. And while many of the consequences he faces for his shitty actions wouldn't make sense for Diane to face- she never does anything that should get her sent to prison, and she's not a celebrity who can get canceled the way Bojack was- she absolutely could have and should have faced consequences in her personal relationships and just... doesn't. With Bojack, he does terrible things to the people in his life, and he pretty much loses them all. Hollyhock and Diane both cut him out, Todd tries to avoid him for most of the second half of the show, even P.C. distances herself from him at the end. He loses everybody in his life (except Mister Peanutbutter) because of all of his misdeeds. By contrast, Diane is generally... pretty shitty to most of the people in her life throughout the show. A running gag in the show is that she cares so little about her "best friend" that she doesn't even know what the poor woman does for work, just as one example. I think how badly the show handles giving Diane consequences for her shitty actions is best showcased with the way her relationship with Mister Peanutbutter ends. She, knowing full well he's still in love with her, divorces him before promptly inviting him into her apartment, sleeps with him twice, and then as soon as she's satisfied that desire she cuts him out again. That's a toxic, emotionally abusive way to treat someone, and yet their last conversation on-screen we ever see is Mister Peanutbutter APOLOGIZING TO DIANE for not listening to her more, and trying to make amends for that. The one exception to this rule of Diane escaping culpability for her actions is when Bojack confronts her in Season 2 about how he felt betrayed over how she wrote the book. Even then, though, Diane says sorry and the pair move on as if it was never an issue. When's the last time Bojack apologizing for something was enough? And similarly, I see people handwave away Diane's terrible treatment of Mister Peanutbutter post-divorce by making the excuse that she was having terrible mental health issues at the time... as if that's ever been an excuse for Bojack or any other character that the show was willing to accept. In a show that's all about how people's actions have consequences, and a show that otherwise so deeply understands feminism and powerfully delivers a feminist message, it's incredibly frustrating to me to see a character who is often referred to as "the female Bojack" consistently escape real personal consequences for her actions. It either flies directly in the face of the show's "actions have consequences" theme, or it flies in the face of the show's feminist message by implying that women shouldn't be held accountable for their mistakes and are somehow less responsible for themselves than the men in the show who are very deservedly held to account for the bad things they do. This show doesn't let its characters get away with doing shitty things without consequences... unless your name is Diane Nguyen, in which case you get maybe the happiest ending in the entire show. And sure, she earned that happy ending by growing and becoming a better person, but if that's all it took to deserve a happy ending then The Face Of Depression should have been the series finale. That's why I dislike Diane- it's just really disappointing to see the show excuse the show's second most prominent character does when the whole show is about actions having consequences.

Her sleeping with mr peanutbutter wasn't abusive, it was just wrong. Like, I feel like you're not understanding what abuse is with this comment. He was an equal participant in the act. Sleeping with someone without the intention of getting with them does not make you abusive. Even if the person has feelings for you. What it seems like is that they both still had feelings for each other. They were still attracted to each other. And then they fucked up by sleeping together again. He did it under the thought that she wanted to get back together, but she didn't say that. Someone can make a bad decision that ends up hurting someone else without it being abusive. I've been abused. I've also misread situations and had people hurt my feelings because I thought things meant something different than what they actually meant. And those two things are different. I don't think every person that has hurt my feelings is an abuser.

I absolutely Love Diane. People love Bojack because we see his highs and lows. This works in his favor, however with Diane this works in reverse. Diane's character is so conplex that she feels real. She feels like a real person, with highs and lows. People focus on her lows because she's not THE main character she's one of the main characters, as the audience we see more of her lows than her highs. People hate her because she's pushy, people love Bojack because he's come to terms that he sucks.

Because Diane chose to sleep with Mr. Peanutbutter TWICE, while knowing that he was in a relationship with another girl. I love the character, but I understand the hate she gets. She's a walking embodiment of 'pointing out the sliver in someone's eye, while ignoring the log in your own'. That kind of hypocrisy can really rub people wrong. One thing that I think you overlooked though is that Diane becomes a vessel for the writer's views from time to time, and that can create hostility if people either disagree with the views, or just the concept of a writer speaking through a specific character. The conflict over people liking the Philbert character and Diane's frustration is a pretty transparent example of this.
@dayharper9637
@dayharper9637 5 месяцев назад
Could you elaborate on this--particularly the hypocrisy? She does complain about a lot of things, but if I'm remembering right, her main recurring gripe is sexism, which she is not particularly guilty of. I would love to hear your thoughts on this fleshed out. Also, I think the point about her being a voice for the writers is an excellent one. It fits extremely well with her character, but is also just. . . so tranparently meta. Although--I think it's really interesting that Diane leaves the project as soon as she realizes what's happening, and I do wonder if any specific writers ever left Bojack for that reason--and if not, what we should take from the contrast. Also: do you have any thoughts on *why* people hate having a writer speak through a particular character from time to time?

After finally getting around to watching the series for the first time last year in 2023 and absolutely loving it to the point where I unironically think it's one of the best written adult-animated sitcoms ever made, it was no surprise that Diane was my favorite character and I found her to be relatable but I was surprised to see just how much people hate her within the fandom. You're right that sexism definitely plays a part in some of it but I think misogyny also does as well. Misogyny doesn't have to be towards all women but can also be towards certain kinds of women and it's a tale as old as time how outspoken women who aren't afraid to share their opinions with unwavering conviction can receive a lot of hate. Rosie O'Donnell, Madonna, and even feminists who highlight certain problems in society, all of this makes a certain group of men irate and enraged and they complain about women like this in a manner that is akin to "know your place and be quiet". That said, I'm glad a character like Diane existed in the show, she was part of what made it great and I appreciate how even though she was supposed to be the voice of reason (along with Princess Carolyn), she still had problems and made plenty of mistakes, it all helped humanize her and kept her from being a shallow mouthpiece. Honestly all the characters were well written, well most of them as I didn't care for Todd all that much but aside from that, everyone was enjoyable.

She's a very complex character, keeping in mind that none of the characters on the show are perfect and the worst person award goes to Bojack but I get why people would be frustrated with her. At first I was too. She, like Bojack was relatable at times. It's the judgmental idealistic attitude that can get on my nerves. She wasn't a good wife and peanut butter wasn't a good husband as well. Wether you love or hate her, we can all agree that that's a well written character.

I honestly love how utterly frustrating so many characters in that show are. As I've worked my way out of terrible behavior patterns I was taught as a kid, I've legitimately found BH to be a really good anchor to remind myself that, yeah, people are frequently just *big freaking messes.* Even people who have done terrible things sometimes deserve empathy - even if you never speak to them again, it's important to remember why people are the way they are. Some people are in fact just rotten without any evident reason (ie, Butterscotch), others can easily be interpreted as horrific but the answer is way more complicated than it seems at first (ie, Joseph Sugarman), and others are just kinda unlikable sometimes because they have stuff to work through (ie, Diane). It's so incredibly rare to come across someone who's just bad for no reason other than that they're plain rotten. BH's greatest strength is making viewers confront how we view the world and each other through the complexity of its characters.

Great video! I think you pretty much cover all the points I would have on why people hate Diane. I like to believe it's more so a loud minority that hates her than anything else? From a lot of analysis videos and critiques of the show, I've always seen more positive comments where people relate to Diane deeply, how Diane often represents the struggles and self-doubt women go through, how she's the voice of reason or the soul of the show, and so on. It's usually when you find certain "pockets" in the community where the hate train for Diane is clear, and from what I noticed the arguments in those threads are rooted in sexism or double standards. Things like amounting PB's love for her through large gestures and her not being grateful for it and watering down love and affection to materialism. Beyond those short-sited comments, I have a feeling some people would feel repelled by Diane because of her having a strong sense of social justice. I think online spaces like Twitter have trivialized the importance of being politically progressive, and how they've watered it down to wanting to "win" an argument, and I think people might jump to hostility hearing Diane and shut out what she's saying, rather than taking consideration that she DOES practice as much as she preaches. So maybe there's this perception that she's preformative, and that misunderstanding of her character and values leads people to dislike her. In terms of the larger audience again I do feel like the MAJORITY of people do adore Diane. She's reliable, detail-orientated, empathetic, articulate, dutiful and emotionally intelligent. She's always been a comfort character for me, and (despite being fictional) she's someone I aspire to be too.

I agree that a huge part of the hate towards Diane is straight up misogyny. It's seen way too often in other media. So I wanna make it clear that what I have to say about her is purely from my own opinion and experience. I disliked Diane a lot in the show, and 90% of it was simply because I've had way too many negative experiences with people just like her in my life. It's been a bit since I watched the show, so I might get a few things wrong. To me, it felt like Diane was just someone who was so self-righteous to others despite in no way being in a position that justifies that arrogance. Her rudeness, her preachiness, and her aggressiveness is all unfounded when you look at her own actions. Is Bo Jack a worse person? Absolutely. I'm not in any way saying Diane is the worst person imaginable in the show nor to say she actually is a bad person. Moreso just that her flaws are ones I've been on the receiving end before of and they truly are toxic traits that I can't stand people with those traits anymore. (Just for clarity, I have met these people of several genders, so it's not even exclusive to a single gender.) The worst toxic trait that makes Diane go from "a flawed, human character" to "a bad person who needs to get over themselves" is the singular trait I can't stand the most. She almost never accepts responsibility for how shitty she acts and when she does, it's almost always a half-apology. No matter what she's done, how much she's hurt people, or even how justified her actions were, she will never just admit "okay yeah I was wrong, sorry" without fighting tooth and nail to lash out at everyone around her. It's okay to do shitty things, because we all make mistakes. It's okay to have slip ups and hurt the people you care about unintentionally. What matters most is how you handle the situation after. How you recognize, acknowledge, and accept responsibility for that pain and wrong doing. Every single time Diane hurts another character, she almost immediately jumps to "well it wasn't my fault YOU did-" just deflecting responsibility. And when she does end up finally apologizing, it's either a loaded apology or one that is forced out of her rather than coming from a place of sincere compassion. "I'm sorry that you're so sensitive you can't handle me 🙄" Sort of vibes. This is a trait that's seen in Bo Jack too (as well as other characters), and it's definitely one of the most frustrating traits he has as well. Both of them on screen displaying these actions made me uncomfortable and hate them both. This isn't directed solely at Diane. She's a complex person, but definitely someone I think is far from "innocent" to not deserve any criticism. I also acknowledge a huge part of my dislike for her character is really just biased, projected past trauma on a fictional animated character that I see the worst traits in from people I knew in my life.

Diane has an arc (when she gets away from Hollywoo) where she does have to come to terms with her flaws, but we don't get to see all of it. And she doesn't have a ton of screen time at the end to expound about her growth, but something she does to show it is NOT RANT AT BOJACK. The old Diane would have been self righteous and angry at him for what he put everyone through. She would have preached at him. But Diane has learned that that doesn't help anything, so instead she just shows BoJack that she understands he's been in pain, she's honest about how she feels without being a jerk about it, and then she drops it. She doesn't even explicitly tell BoJack that she doesn't want to be in touch with him anymore at all. It's implied, but she doesn't need to twist that knife. Diane grows.

I think a main reason a lot of people dislike Diane is because she’s very flawed like everyone else but when she does things like take her anger out on people, shes portrayed as “in the right” Because she often times is right, but the way she goes about being right, is wrong and she doesn’t get called out as much as Bojack, when does things that are selfish due to per mental health, or when she blurs the lines between advocacy and virtue signaling (as I feel like that kind of what she was doing, when she was worrying about the world and politics to distract from her mental health, using virtue signaling as a deflection or distraction to an extent) But what they don’t understand is that she doesn’t really need that as much, as like with Princess Caroline in some places *Her own misery is the punishment and is meant to be the deterrent* she doesn’t need to be called out and punished like Bojack The audience isn’t supposed to need to be told that they shouldn’t act like Diane before she really gets better in season 6, because all they need to do is look at Diane her in those seasons and how unhappy she is with life You’re supposed to see that while she’s not a terrible person and she more often than not has good intentions and legit world views, the way she lives her life isn’t all that great, because look at how unhappy she is You aren’t supposed want to be Diane in the first 5 seasons You’re supposed to see yourself in her and by the end understand what changes need to be made so you can finally be somewhat happy and content like she seems to be with Guy at the end (yes all her troubles weren’t solved but they never are, but she is living a more fruitful lifestyle so to speak and approaching it in a better way) Of course there’s also just your misogynists and people who don’t like being called out but thats easy to dismiss and make sense of, people can be shitty, Im more so addressing people who actually see her flaws, as Positivity here points out, there are a lot of flaws to Diane to not like about her and makes mistakes

And I think ppl including this video creator genuinely can’t understand why ppl may have a problem with her in a way that doesn’t excuse her “ Nah. I honestly think this is such an overhyped excuses. Literally every video essay talking about this seems to not understand that there are actual reasons to dislike her character past accusations of misogyny. To the point where I actually think this is an excuse Diane can be condescending. Hypocritical. Annoying. Rude. Feel the need to talk down to ppl and their problems without ever having a slice of empathy yet expecting the same on her end with her friends like Roxy. Writing a video myself as to how poor of an overused reason this is. Since this video like so many others just devolves into ppl not actually talking about why they dislike Diane and more about how they relate to her and don’t really understand the flaws in a way that excuses her actions. I don’t hate Diane. Or think she’s worse than bojack. But if anyone says they don’t understand, or use the misogyny excuse in of itself. Mostly it's the hypocrisy & self-righeousness. These are traits that instantly make a character hard to like. She also had sex with Mr. Peanutbutter while he was with Pickles.

diane is jerry from rick and morty only instead of being a pathetic loser she takes this holier than thou attitude and high and mighty tone of voice to talk over anyone who she disagrees with people who don't see that are the same problem that diane is diane was literally in every sense of this word dunking on bojack for taking drugs to feel better but the second she got high with hipsters she went to mr penautbutter to announce her newly found understanding of emotions and universe

@@ryszakowy I kind of saw that similarly, I got the impression that sometimes she was trying to lecture the other characters on how horrible they are, but a character like that only works as a likeable character if they show compassion too and reflect over their own flaws too. And I got the impression that, yes, Diane was reflective, but only in the way of seeing which things she actually deserves and how she deserves to be treated well and stand up for herself and not let depression direct her life. That was kind of her arc, and that is a great message. But I did only see a development that was like "I deserve so much and I only deserve good things happen to me" but when other people were happy she criticized them for their unhealthy ways even though she was in no place to judge because she didn't criticise herself in that way. Her self-criticism always came from a viewpoint of depression and not reflectiveness in my opinion. Just because you are doing great and have healthy coping mechanisms it doesn't mean that you are in a place to lecture on the behaviour of those who don't. It is like when healthy people tell a depressed person "well I couldn't be like that, I eat healthy, I work out, I sleep enough" etc. while they themselves are sometimes not doing well either. Like. You are not some kind of Ubermensch who is the measurement of morale. Idk sometimes she just came of as hypocritical, but maybe that was just my opinion. Her character had good sides though, like the self-acceptance arc. I just wish it was more about her becoming more reflective in a constructive manner (criticism where it is needed without self-deprecation, but aware of one's own flaws) and not seeing herself as someone who has the right to lecture everyone just because she tries to be a better person. Lecturing people who are worse than her doesn't make her a better person, but it is kind of portrayed as that in the show and never criticised, at least if I didn't miss it.

The only Bojack characters I truly DISLIKE with a capital D are Vance Waggoner, Hank Hippopopalous and Butterscotch. I can understand how certain men (and women) end up like that, but it doesnt make me feel any sympathy for them, even if i share certain experiences with them. And i even go back and forth on sympathy toward bojack. I experienced a lot of the same things he did in childhood, and the mental illness/maladaptive behavior is extremely relatable, but its still hard to feel bad for him when I've met men like that in real life and know just how destructive and abusive they can be. Such a fantastic show though. I never stop thinking about it.

I kinda feel like out of a lot of characters on the show being celebrities who the common person is not going to have a lot of first hand experience with, she seems more like a person you may know in your everyday life. You can maybe know people with parts of Bojack, but not many people have addict TV stars who drive cars into pools and has the resources to steal the letter from the HOLLYWOOD sign in their life so there is a level of detachment you can give when watching them. It's like wincing more at watching on TV a papercut over being beheaded with a katana.

I don't like that she slept with Mr. Peanutbutter while he was in a relationship with Pickles. I don't like the dismissive way she treated her friends (besides Bojack). It makes it extra annoying because she points out what's wrong with everyone else. Bojack at least knows that he is shitty, Princess Carolyn at least knows she is career obsessed and short sighted, Todd at least knows he is wayward and lost.....Diane can't take a look in the mirror and be honest with herself. That speech she gave about "we don't have a deep down...I think all we are is the things that we do". Okay Diane...then you are a shitty friend and a home wrecker.

Sure Diane is hypocrite sometimes but when was she dismissive with her friends? Also Diane knows she is kind of fucked up that's why she is is so miserable. She can't be honest with herself, when her depressive spiral in Season 2 is due to the fact that she learn the hard way that ppl aren't just the thing they do : she literally says she was not the person she thaught she was.

11:20 "not so much Todd" This makes me wonder, did Todd ever did something really wrong and toxic? I can think of some things because he didn't knew better, but to be toxic and wrong he should know better. I also can think about one exchange that sums up Diane and it has Todd in it, when he was saying "this is important, this is about cordovia" she totally dismissed him, because she is not doing those political things because she sees them as important, is more a distraction from her own life.

Todd's toxicity comes from the fact that he does not get his life together and depends on the other characters to support him.

Hey, great video! I disliked Diane during my first watch-through, and then on my second watch-through, I realized it was because I saw myself in her and it made me uncomfortable. Now she's my favourite character, and her arc/ending is by FAR my favourite. I really appreciate that the show never made a big deal about her weight gain, depicting it as just another part of her transition into happiness. I also think Mr. Peanutbutter's character writing is underrated. He's a great example of the fact that being a nice guy and a good person are not the same thing.

Titling the video a with a question that you just go "People are wrong, and sexist >:(" to in the first ten seconds is a bit silly. To answer the question, author wish fulfillment duh. To give a more complicated answer, when other characters do bad things on the show they experience blowback, or some sort of redemption. The show repeatedly has characters get punished for the bad things they are doing. Spending whole seasons of characters suffering for even fleeting glimpses of thankless unacknowledged personal redemption. Bojack has a whole silent episode saving some kid. They do a whole thing with a crush where he ends up looking like the most pathetic creep. With Diane, she is not only depicted as being hyper competent like Carolyn, but she doesn't lose. They reward her duplicity at every turn. People like justice. They want the cowboy to ride in on his white horse, and to shoot the bad guy in the black hat.

It’s not sexism, it’s simply a self serving bias due to the fact that Bojack is simply the protagonist of the story. If it was called the “Dianne Nuygen “show, I think the hate would be reversed

I won't lie I did find Diane kind of annoying for but the same reason most people find aggressively ideal people annoying they're rarely satisfied even if you bend to their moral standards they can frankly be a bit unpleasant to be around because they they're always lost in correcting the bad they often can make you lose sight of the good (Something Diane eventually learns and addresses about herself)... which is a dream to deal when compared to a toxic, selfish, self-aggrandizing, self-pitying, self-destructive train wreck like Bojack
