I feel like plaits is trying to play the role of the classic IDM poly synth playing those off kilter progressions. Could you pre record some Juno progressions into the slample instead? It might give some grounding to those great rhythms.
An obvious change would be to remove the Metropolis (I know you love it), and change it with a Five12 Vector. You'll keep the repeats/stages but gain tons of variations and sub sequences with almost the same HP real estate. With the expander you'd get 8 tracks instead of two (but even two is one more than the Metro can deliver). I would say you'd want an Ochd, but it's there :). Finally I believe your life (live) be a lot easier with a Polyend Preset. I guess these aren't really 'problems', it's evolution and you're still at the absolute top of the food chain.
I really enjoyed this, all your videos are really helping me with getting to know different modules! I am currently designing my first rack ever and I'm really trying to figure out exactly which modules to get before buying anything. often use clouds in the same why myself, feed it a steady clock and any sound source and it makes instant percussion plus you can crank the density by hand for when you want neat industrial hardware noises, VREEEEEEE. as for distributing triggers a switch matrix would be my goto. one of my favorite things is to run some clocks / euclidean patterns / funky tap tempoed lfos into the wmd ssm, then you can mix and match the triggers and even use the comparator outputs in tandem with a slow clock on the compare in input to get that periodic percussion effect you were talking about, food for thinks
Mylar your beats and lovely voice still takes me to that place, thank you Sir. For the rig an idea, passive mults need not eat HP, they could be grafted into any kind of box/shell/just tapped to the side of the case, ya know if you just have to have more more. :)
Regarding the ergonomics/thick bunch of cables that are in the way issue: I had the same issue with my system and found that replacing most patch cables with Tendrils (www.tendrilscables.com) really cleaned things up and made things much more accessible.

You definitely need to look into the Noise Engineering: Variatic Sequent. It's small and works very simply and is perfect for 4/4 stuff. Minimum input with maximum interest. Add the variatic multium expander for more functionality.
15:30 Perhaps SSSR Labs Matrixarchate will do the job for routing triggers and CV. It is similar to EMS Synthi modulation matrix and allows to save route combinations as patches and then sequence them.
Muting audio < muting gates (the same modules that do this can also reroute and combine gates...) my live rig is 6u and it slays. Struggling with 12u... Lord have mercy on your soul
About the second Grids: why not go with a Shakmat Gallop? 2 outputs, lots of patterns and it gives a shift button to move the pattern in time so thats your reset “time shift”

You actually gave me an idea to combine Grids with Numeric Repetitor from Noise Engineering. It shifts patterns very well, especially for techno. Great tip!

have you thought about moving from grids to NE's repetitors? they are 4 outputs each and are smaller. :) Personally I think they're amazing. Super fast and rewarding
Ahhh the massive cable dreadlock - a hindrance in any system 😂 I know it’s probably not at practical, but you could double the cable lengths in that part of the patch, and sort of lay a large portion of that IT server’s worth of patch cables, onto the table and to the side of the case... but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head. You could also set up preset changes on pams for alternative rhythms and then use cv to rotate them... but I could see how that may muddle things - also, the SSSR Matrixarchate is a killer programmable switch.... maybe a bit large for the system though 😞
Your 4/4 kick idea is something I’ve been working on! I was thinking you mult Euclidean, then having a switch so you can send Euclidean + the other sequencer, OR just Euclidean. Would make it a lot easier to access a 4/4 whenever you need it

In my system I use beatstep pro for sequencing so I’ll have channel 8 of gates be ALWAYS 4:4 kick on every single patch, and have my switch flick between that and more complicated rhythm. Curious how it will work with something you’d have to dial into 4/4 with just a little bit more thought :-)
I’m about 30 minutes in and have a couple thoughts about controlling Squid Salmple. You’ve got those 3 CV ins that could probably be used to switch to different samples, instead of repatching cables. My other thought is to use a switch like the boss bow tie, where you send it 16th notes or perhaps something from Euclidean Circles, with trigger outs to The Squid, and use a random voltage to select which input gets triggered.
Thanks for more great material! Not sure if someone else has suggested this, but one of the things I do for 'incidental' stuff is use MI Branches. Sometimes I use it like you do a sequential switch, where I send the outputs from Branches to two devices. or, another thing I have done, is send the 2nd output to a burst module.. also on occasion I will double up the coin toss, as in the previous burst example, I will run the 2nd output from Branches into the input of the 2nd unit in Branches, so when the burst trigger is sent, there is another layer of chance that it will go through.. lastly, sometimes I just use one output from Branches, to skip some triggers. and, as always, playing with the probability knob allows nice dynamics during the performance.I have a Skipmin on backorder, but I am interested to get that in the flow as well.

Great video! I love hearing why people made the choices they have in Eurorack. Some thoughts... Regarding those cable ties. A great idea, but be careful! I've been using the Nite Ize "Gear Tie" brand. They're great, but they do break if you bend them semi-frequently. Each time it happens, I am saddened. And one other thought. If you'd be willing to include an iOS device in your setup, www.modulargrid.net/e/quicco-sound-mi-1e-2-6 could save you space and provide a lot of sequences/modulation.
mylarmelodies it works pretty great, although the company that makes them seems to be impossible contact. I was just thinking it might make a good alternative to the lightstrip.
Did you explore the Confundo Funkitus? It has mutes, and allows you to crossfade between 2 sets of drum patterns with various modes of probability. I personally have a nerdseq + grids going into the confundo, it provides all sorts of fun/control.
Additionally, a bernoulli gate, some mults, and a VCA (along with some creative patching) can get similar probabilistic gate blending, but with tactile control over each output. Currently designing and building a live case that makes use of this to blend between sequenced gates and clocked random gates, and then through a skipmin to provide mutes/density control. Partially cribbed this idea from Richard Devine, as it's a great way to have very tactile, controllable random elements in your gate patterns.
The 2 pattern kick sounds amazing, but if you want to do it without 2 seperate Euclid modules you could probably just sequence the number of steps with CV.
This video is starting to annoy me. It keeps getting recommended even after I’ve watched it start to finish and yet STILL I watch it again. Might need to visit your next live set in Yawkshire and bend your ear!
Regarding the tuning - absolutely... yup, just tune by ear or to intervals as you did with bringing in the 5ths. (unless of course you are going to overdub later - this is important!) However - it all goes a bit pear shaped when your mate turns up with his bass or guitar. At this point, no easy way out: you have to set all your oscillators to a standard tuning, or of course get them to tune to you (and then you are an unpopular bunny!). So yes, a guitar tuner is very handy. I'd start by getting my sequencer / controller / quantiser playing an E if you are working with guitar buddies, as this tends to be a natural easy to play key for them in most circumstances, since the lowest string is standard tuned to E. Then I'd tune all of my oscillators to that, probably though at various octaves depending on the voices function (bass, drone, sequence, top line etc). After you have done that, then all should be harmonious :) Of course, if your guitar buddy is a jazz headcase who wants to play everything in D flat.... then tune everything to that.
Hey, comment 1 year later, but maybe helpful. Did you consider 16n fader bank Berlin edition, rack mountable or desktop? Could solve your problem with controlling multiple destinations simultaneously.
Very cool! This might inspire me to get back into "groovebox" territory with my modular, just been doing the ambient stuff lately. Do you ever mess with using the accent outs on grids to trigger completely different drum sounds? You could even combine with a gate delay. Seems like you don't have the accents patched at all in this vid at least.
I’d like to get them doing accents really - given the nature of when the accents fire, I think they’re best suited to reinforcement rather triggering a completely different sound, tho maybe I’d be surprised if I tried.
@@mylarmelodies The 'accent' under the second channel almost always runs a steady 16 tick bar. I have no idea why but it's great as a free clock mult with some unpredictability built in. Hey I get it while writing this. A switched mult could control drum rolls on the snare! Must be something worth exploring.
Love these live rig breakdowns! I had to stop using the M303 in my live rig bc the resonance pot got mad scratchy. Cleaning out the tumbleweed of dust in the shaft helped a lot but it still makes audible noise on wiggle sometimes. And even if it only happens 5% of the time, that's still far too unreliable for live performance. Wommmp. Also, it seems to want 12v gates to fully open or something - had to run it through a lot of gain to match my other voices' levels. I do miss it though... Whats your Stages configuration like btw? Oh and how you finding the new tip top fx?
Have you tried using deoxit to clean out the internals of the potentiometers? you might be able fix the crackles that way. Just unplug the module (no power), spray the deoxit in the part, and turn the knob back and fourth 30-40 times. Its helped to fix crackling pots for a lot of my gear.

Unsolicited thoughts incoming. 2x Noise Engineering Zularic repetitors take up about the same space as 1 grids, that's 8 knob based patterns. System 80 has an 8hp Jove filter that can save you some space. Using some sort of Envelope modules with vcas built in could save a lot of space and power connectors, for example Noise engineering Sinc Bucina could replace your pip slope and youd get a vca or LPG functionality added in the same space. Cosmotronic Delta v is basically Maths in 10hp with built in vcas. Filters that have built in vcas like Ripples Or Mum M8 also centralize patching more, less cables less modules. Tiptop One as drum sequencer - You could save a bunch of CV trigger sequences on SD and chage drum patterns with one knob, it can play back CV/gate. Squid Sample also has DC coupled sample inputs and outputs to send triggers elsewhere.

@@mylarmelodies The recent WMD SL3KT seems to be an interesting choice here too: www.modulargrid.net/e/wmd-sl3kt 3-ins (from grids), 2 groups of 3-outs (to the salmple), the switches are normalled down so you could flip all 3 with a single manual switch or a gate. If you want to get weird, you can complicate that switching mesh appropriately with the other 2 switches or gates.

Although, in terms of real-estate, instead of a fader-like layout, you could fit 3 knobs and a small "REC"-button on a 1u module, if you can sacrifice the blinkenlights and immediate "taps".. edit: CLICK READMORE Definitely agree on the turing machine. It's a really good module, but it would be ace if it was 1u.. More cramped, but usually you only handle the top knob (no pun intended). Switched / banked multiples to punch in/out percussion? I mean, I know you love your percussion, but if you want that "droppy", instant switch between rythms / instruments, there's no escaping multiples.. Omg yes, those mute modules are completely buried under the ratsnest O_o Oooh second Grids on alternate reset! Yes! Or maybe (see below) That thought about the 3 input 9 output "router", if you want "dead simple" [grids123 to squid123/squid456]; That's literally a 3PDT toggle-switch you could wire into the patchcables (Quincas style?), with the center pins going to Grids, and the other triplets going to either 1,2,3 or 4,5,6 on the squid. It wouldn't be buffered, and it would be "either/or", but it'll work! Mid-range: If all it needs to do is route around a bunch of digital triggers (so not audio), then you're probably done quickly using an arduino and slapping it behind a panel.. It'll be so specialised though, that if it isn't "set-integrated", it would quickly lose it's convenience.. I guess it's one of those all-or-nothing things. High-end custom: Completely one-off designed trigger-router module that literally sequences re-wiring of every module. I'm thinking a bunch of blocks of 1-in/4-out, maybe 4 per 2u module (can just about cram in all the connections), and the switches are actually physically behind the input-jack inside the module. So you trigger a block to switch output by momentarily pushing the input-jack deeper into the socket. Then the same for the outputs, if you want an output to "pull" the input towards itself, push in the output jack. Tiny arduino does all the routing digitally, and bob's your uncle. Only thing I can think of that somewhat keeps the modulesize down..Then the pro-version of that: Have 3 blocks instead of 4, and with that space, slap in a 7-segment display that shows what pattern you're on (maybe pre-programmed on desktop pc, micro-sd slot somewhere), and it routes based on a clock-input? I'm actually suprised there isn't such a module already. That would be hella cool. Completely agree on the logic modules, very powerful, but it's gonna eat up half your skiff-space. It's hella cool though. I regularly just get completely lost shoving loads of logic into racks in vcv, and it ends up almost being a computer in itself if you let it.. It needs some "smarts". Like a 4u module with OLed screen, that does "internal logic element tinkering", and is just a black box with ins and outs on the outside. Like, all you do to set it up is tinker on the touchscreen and drag gates around. Again, I'm suprised there isn't such a module already.. Shit-that's-on-in-the-back-John-Hopkins'y-thingzies, yes! And that pad-element, woaaah yes. Dreamy. But you know that's slippery slope, right? Next thing you know, you're breaking into Richard D. James' house at 2am, and playing his air-powered organ. Yaas, dusting brushes. Also convenient for cleaning desks and expensive mechanical keyboards and all.. More sequencers? Less sequencers? More flexible routing? I mean, the more control you implement, the more you're changing a dance-machine into a violin (dramatic, hmmm). I'd say you're pretty good at balancing your setup as it is right now. Not sure what small changes would improve upon what you have set up. Aaaaand that was 80 minutes that flew by, woaaah.. Thanks for sharing mate, it was excellent!

(not sure what that is in freedom bucko's but yeah, 60+ $ probably) I like the DIY method, because it doesn't take up skiff-space. Honestly, it's super easy to build yourself.. Guitarpedal builders use it all the time, because it's super easy to take one of the 3 (a 3pdt is basically 3 separate dpdt switches ganged together) switches and use it as a power-indicator (basically switches on a LED), and the other 2 switches to route audio wither through the pedal or to the output (true-bypass)). Ooh nested parenthesis, nice.. Anyway, lemme slap a quick picture together. (aaand, poasted to your twitter)
Design problem… you’re doing stuff with a converted wardrobe and a telecoms communication system, that would be more sensibly and enjoyably done with a groovebox. Everyone does it. it’s like using a hot air balloon for the shopping run. I blame Colin benders but I’m sure he wasn’t the first. Talk to Roland, or elektron.
Also a great shout!! Only catch is it (like the ones I mentioned) only has as many outs as ins. The Doepfer A-182-2 is the dreamiest solution I’ve found as it’s selectable 4 > 4 but with actually 8 possible destinations - so you can flip switches to send any one of 4 sources to two different places each!
Thank you for this great video! (and all your videos which are all so great) I'm about to buy a Lyra-8. I love the interactivity of making music that way. But I can't find one to demo locally. I'm very much in line with what I think you love musically and sonically. Is the Lyra-8 a keeper for you over the years?
May I suggest Four Bricks Rook (or two of these) + Maze matrix? Lately I have been experimenting with that combo and its really immediate and flexible. Also - great video. You have been inspiring me for a long time.
Instead of the Turing machine taking up valuable HP Noise Engineering have a module called Mimetic Sequent (6hp) that can take your pitch cv from your sequencer and then record it. You can then let ir add xtra quantized or unquantized notes to your sequence. You can lock the pattern like a TM and it can save three patterns to memory it can also just be random like TM with just a clock source. If you add the expander it will give 3 more lanes of cv which can all be different or the same and it will add 4 random gate outputs. I like running my TD-3's cv out to the module, then to all of the oscillators and then having the ability to add or change the whole pattern on the fly

Great video, as always, Mr Mylar. So...you're using 2 modules to generate kick patterns...both eculid type modules...yet one of them has 3! channels of euclidean patterns. Why not simply use two channels of that vpme module for your kicks?
Ahh wait you mean you can make two of the rings chain - yeah that’s true, but the issue is losing a ring - I prefer to have as much control immediately accessible on the panel without any controls hidden or under menus

The Hikari Quad Switch could be a useful addition to your trigger routing problem. I solved my trigger count problem by buying the WMD Metron; now I just have a pattern composition problem :P
Seems like it could be useful to have the modular equivalent of a stage snake. Single cable with bundles of 3, 4, 5 connectors, and leave maybe 5" of reach for the individual cables at each end.
When you're talking about the Grids with 3-out for every input, mixable/switchable, are you thinking of, like, a voltage controlled switching mixer-mult? That sounds like an interesting project!
