Garmin has a truckers GPS whee you enter your vehicles measurements and it warns you of everything, right down to tight turns that may be difficult BEFORE you enter a road. So you won’t drive 24 miles down a road to find out it has tight switchback turns you can’t make like me. 😊
Careful with the input current limit. I typically set my inverter to 24amps on a 30amp site. If you are constantly pulling 30amps from a pedestal you run the risk of starting to melt the plug. Since you have such a good solar and lithium system that can assist you wont notice a difference. Good rule of thumb is set the current limit at 80% of the breaker size especially at a campground. 16amp on a 20amp. 12amps on a 15amp and 24amps on a 30amp.
Just a gentle reminder…50 amp service is really 100 amps (12,000 watts) into your RV, not just 50 amps. When you are on 30 amp service (3,600 watts), and your inverter(s) add additional capacity (you said 20 amps), then you may have 50 amps (6,000 watts), but not “50 amp service”.
You guys seemingly handle stressful encounters so well. My husband would have been having a breakdown turning around in that narrow site/road and approaching that tunnel! Beautiful boat ride…. So glad June is well and you are taking time to explore new ways.
As an avid skier for yrs i have been to Lake Tahoe many many times from home in the Bay Area...Even married there twice LOL....Another campground you might have liked is Zepher Cove...You passed it as you came in from Carson City on Hwy 50...One place it seems you missed especially being you can unhook and travel in your truck is taking a little ride to Virginia City on the other side of Carson City....Kewl little old western mining town to visit for a day, something we always make time for when in Tahoe....Be well...
I live in South Lake Tahoe, well, 8 miles out of town in Christmas Valley. I drove a Tour Yacht on the Lake for 20 years, retired now It was a great Job. 395 and Eastern Sierra are my stomping grounds. If you two want a nice Boondocking spot near the lake I live on an acre meadow on the Upper Truckee River that's available for a bit. Great Mt Biking trails.
You're learning how to drive that thing and it's a handful. I would advise you find a HUGE parking lot and spend at least an hour doing significant maneuvers. Once you figure it out, it becomes much easier.
I use a mixture of Calgon, Pine-Sol and water in the gray tank areas, about a cup of the mixture down each drain will reduce if not eliminate the smell.
Ok so we had the same issue. Just to reassure you, that’s exactly what we did. Shark fin on all vents and no smell since. We had tried having the Kleen tank guys clean the tanks, we tried every tank concoction, replaced the P trap under kitchen sink…. None of it worked. It was the shark fins that did the trick.
You are long gone now from Tahoe, but from someone who spends a lot of time up there (being from the SF bay area) - next time check out North Shore. Less crowds, and no Casinos, just nicer for camping and such. Donner lake is nice too. Bliss Camp Ground, Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Sand Harbor, all wonderful.
Hi Chris and Aaron, we stay at Tahoe Valley Campground every 4th of July (except this year we were in Hawaii) and just love that place. To watch the fireworks over the lake is a sight I wish everyone could experience in their lifetime. It is AWESOME! Glad you enjoyed your stay in Lake Tahoe. Hope Junebug is doing well after her surgery. Take care and safe travels.
Highly recommend the Beacon for the Calamari and the Rum Runners. As far as gray tank smell i use the TST drop ins for cleaning it and the black tanks !
70 what about Hwy.84 in Oregon M.M.161 is a Rest Area U can fish from the bank it is A 100. Ft. Deep at the bank & the blue spotted fish. They R -Hungry.
Loved this episode of our “stomping grounds”. The hubby loves that “she” drives. (you may have a new viewer) 😂 Hey! Taking 89 through Hope Valley and over Luther Pass would’ve been your best bet AND dropped you out nearest TV Campground. Bygone’s, it doesn’t matter, it’s all glorious.
My family and I live in Reno NV and we just love going to lake Tahoe. We simply load up the suv with the kids and dog and head that way whenever we have the time to be together and decent weather ❤️ One of the most beautiful places you can visit along with the redwood Forest too. Omg I love that place too 😊
You two just keep adding beautiful places to my wish list! Thanks for the video. I hope to get out that way when we retire in a couple of years. I hope you got a good break!
I always enjoy driving past store front windows when my ride is clean and shiny and checking it out. Tahoe definitely smells of money. Hope June has recovered nicely. 🥂
Chris, thank you! I recently started watching your videos and was impressed with your driving skills. I took over driving today as we were coming down through mountains In Tennessee. Some steep down grades and lots of curves. In my mind I pictured you driving some crazy routes and told myself “you’ve got this”! Thanks from this 73 year old gal! I’m really enjoying your videos. Hope little June bug is doing well. I’m trying to comprehend Aaron’s battery explanations but batteries are hard! Safe travels!
Hi Barbara! I'm so proud of you for getting behind the wheel. You can do it! 💪 And you even did it through the mountains, that's the way to do it. Keep it up! - Chris
Visited Lake Tahoe (in a rented RV) back in 1995. It was wonderful then, and looks just as wonderful now. Definitely plan to return in the next year or two... as always, safe travels.
So question, the wheel length of your old trailer compared to the 5th wheel, which of the two had a tighter turn radius? Our rig is an Airstream with weight distribution, which limits a tight turn by itself but I've been looking at longer 5ths and it looks like the distance from the truck rear wheels to the trailers front wheels are closer even thought the 5th is way longer than our rig. I watched you turning around and it looks like you could have cut that sucker tight and been out of there. If you wanted too. As far as the gray tank smell, check that the pee traps have water in them. as you go down the road the pressure changes in the trailer and draws the air into the trailer. She mentioned dust on everything and travel causes that as well.
Baking soda open 2 put it in the fridge and freezer it will help with moisture. Safe travels and enjoy i have been watching you both for yrs since you had your van. ❤ love your sweet dogs ❤
I drove through that tunnel 1 to 2 times a week year round usually pulling a 48 foot curtain side trailer at approximately 13’6” I always moved to the center when passing through, sometimes people would get upset with me when I hogged the road on my approach to the tunnel, but once they realized what I was doing they calmed down right away. You passed through it exactly as you should’ve.
We are so glad to see that you are now in our neck of the woods. We met two very briefly at the escapees bash last January. It was our pleasure. We hope to see you at the balloon festival in Albuquerque and yes again at the annual January bash. But for now this is where we camp vacation and live 24 seven. Thomyt
Lake Tahoe is where my son got his first degree black belt at and I completed in martial arts tournaments as a second degree black belt in the mid 90’s.
I sanitize my fresh water tank with vinegar (which is non toxic and acidic so kills mold and bacteria). I just make it a point to let the water hold in my gray tank for about 45 and then drain. I will usually do that twice to sanitize and clean. It’s worked every time
I wasn't paying enough attention to my route and ended up on the Kingsbury grade. Holly moly that sucker is steep. The only good thing about taking that route is that I now don't worry about most any other grade!
In both my grey and black tanks I use Pine Sol and Calgon water softner. I saw a video of a professional tank cleaning service, that is what they suggested. Forget the RV tank eaners. No more smells!
I’ve been through that tunnel and ngl I took part of my half of the road off the middle as well! Gorgeous shots and I grinned through the whole Tahoe sequence because it was obvious how much fun you were having!
Hello Chris and Aaron!! Very awesome!! I love that Hwy 395 corridor!! I need to reach back and watch the earlier videos of your time there. That area has proved to be one of my most favorite spots during my flights. I am probably the only guy on the earth that had a hotel in downtown Reno and I have no clue what Reno is like. We arrived at about 2pm in Reno, and I immediately spent the time circling around Lake Tahoe and doing a few side excursions. I did a large hike around Donner Pass to explore there , the China Wall, and the train tunnels. I ended up finishing up with some night hiking; then down to my hotel in Reno. I had 1 full day to explore. So, headed down Hwy 395 that day, to see the Bodie State Park historical mining buildings, the tufas in Mono Lake, the June Lake loop and a few excusions, Inyo Craters, Devils Post Pile, and a late late dinner in Mammoth. I really look forward to returning! Safe travels PS. Snow is down into the treeline now (approx 10800 feet). So, it wont be long for winter to arrive. Our peak aspen leaf times this year will be 28 Sep- 7 Oct; which is slightly earlier than normal.
I lived in South Lake for 3 years and watched as the tourists and visitors would trash the beaches and parks on holidays leaving diapers, and other disgusting piles of trash everywhere. I don't miss picking up beer cans, bottles and trash from my yard everyday. On the neighborhood forums half of the residents seemed like it was ok because the tourists bring money to the area, while the other half was rightfully furious with this situation. I don't miss Tahoe except for all of the off roading adventures that i had in the area.
Love love Lake Tahoe ❤️ is so beautiful. A long time ago I took a tour similar to the one you took, and I hope Louis is doing well by now, enjoy Tahoe❤❤
I know I'm late to discovering you both. What caught my attention was the comments about who drives. So what!?!? You guys are clearly a partnership and that's all that matters
My son and I were out there in July, with a class C motorhome. Do not take hwy. 108 across the mountains into California, it is not made for campers. Use Hwy 88 and the other pass is closed to any vehicles over 25 ft. Thanks for your info
New to following the channel👍🏼. Love all the insight on your journeys. And I learned something new with the vent shark fins. Sounds like those worked great in comparison to the factory vent pipes. 😁
Thoroughly enjoyed the video this week guys ... Been through that way on my motorcycle but didn't stop to smell the roses 😹 Sometimes I get more focused on the destination than places along the way !! Gotta make an effort to slow down and enjoy ... 👊🏻 Thanks and I'm looking forward to the next video !! 🌻
I went with a Quattro 5000 over dual MultiPlus 3000s due to lack of space, but the more I read, the happier I am with the decision. The dual AC inputs are nice for me with a generator (not important for you), but the ability to limit my AC input current between 13A and 50A really is amazing (specifically the 13A side, for "mooch docking"). I can plug in with a regular extension cord, run my air conditioner, use my microwave, and not have to worry. With me being in a Sprinter van, it's really nice to be able to pull into someone's driveway, just plug in a regular cord, and have everything just work. And I still haven't gotten around to adding solar. So all my power is coming from alternator, (diesel) generator, or plugging in. Anyway, I strongly encourage people to consider the 5000s over dual 3000s if they do a lot of moochdocking. Having the minimum current go from 19A (your setup) to 13A (my setup) can make all the difference.
Hey Paul! Yes, that is a total bummer about our minimum input of 19 amps on the dual inverter. Why can’t they program it to 15! 🤨 Maybe a software update in the future……. So if we plug into a 15 amp circuit we have to switch the inverter to charge only mode. Then we can limit it all the way down to single digits ( or just 15 amp). It will pass through the 15 amps and run the system normal. Just no assist mode! But we can still run one AC no prob. 👍
Gems from you two: “ We did a little bit of scrapeage action”, “You can definitely tell the difference between the two (smells)and neither one is pleasant” and the wisdom of the day-“When you try to be a step ahead you can miss today”. Thanks guys- loved this Tahoe episode. I recommend trying North Lake Tahoe area next time- a quieter, less crowded vibe.
Try using a clay bar kit from auto zone or a store like that. It might take the scratches out without buffing. Not to mention your rig will look amazing after .
