As online entrepreneurs, we thought, "why not work from home... on the road"? So in 2019, we bought and renovated a 2005 Jayco Designer Fifth Wheel, which took us to every state in the lower 48. But the economy hit our business especially hard after the 'vid, spurring us to pivot in new directions and try different strategies, including various work camping jobs!

Before i had my daughter, i used to live/work at different lodges and national parks. I lived in the dorms, but there were quite a few RVers that live and work there too. Ive lived at the Grand Canyon (both North and South Rims), mammoth cave, big bend np and mt McKinley in Alaska

Nice content! Subscribed. One piece of unsolicited advice… you should jack up each individual wheel and spin it while greasing those easy lube spindles. Lessens chance of pushing the rear seal out, and distributes grease evenly. Unless your hub is full, you are not getting grease to the outside bearing. Not a huge deal. Also, jacking tire off the ground gives you a chance to listen to bearings and check for excess play.

We have been full timing for 4 years and we have spent a lot of money, way more than we anticipated. We watched all those channels that said how cheap full timing was, liars the first videos we made were about how expensive this life really is. Love the fast pace in your videos. Which one of you is the good video editor? I recommend taking off the wheels and hubs and greasing the bearings for real, that grease gun method is not a great way to do it. We have been to the UP and ontario a bunch, love it up there during the SUMMER. Slide toppers suck, get rid of them. I inspect and clean our slide tops every move. We have moved over 150 times in 4 years. I like your map animation but make it follow the roads, much cooler looking. You guys are really good on camera, i am really surprised your channel is not much bigger. Larry

Drove to Alaska round trip.last summer. Diesel is expensive but Gas is more expensive especially in Canada. Restaurant weren’t bad and grocery stores were also ok in big cities. Stock up in the bigger cities like Fort Nelson, Whitehorse, Fairbanks. In the middle of nowhere- which there is slot of- everything is expensive especially in Canada.

Sadly, Cinder passed this past summer while we were at Mill Creek Campground. @OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 6 месяцев назад
So this is hard to explain in a comment...but I will try. I'm going to assume you haven't used a sliding hitch before - if that's not the case, I'm sorry for the detail. 😂 So technically I don't need to use anything on the plate because unlike a standard fifth wheel when attached to the RV there is zero movement between the plate and the kingpin plate on the RV (I apologize if these are the incorrect terms.) I put WD40 on that just to give a little less friction when connecting to the RV. When attached, the full fifth wheel assembly in the truck turns WITH the RV (instead of the truck). So the hitch stays in the same alignment with the RV always. As the assembly turns in the bed of the truck, the assembly it goes down the slides (Providing more room so that the front of the RV doesn't make contact with the cab of the truck). The slides are supposed to be lubed with WD40 and they have a plastic or teflon barrier so even on these parts there is no metal on metal contact. I believe the reasoning for the light lubrication on the slides is to avoid those areas from getting gummed up with dirt and grime that inevitably gets caked into the grease. It was 4 years ago but if I remember correctly using grease would actually void my warranty. I hope that helps. This is a VERY common thing that trips people up when it comes to the sliding hitches. I also don't know whether or not this instruction is different on different brands this type of hitch. -J

Ok - Just worked through some math. First our gas budget begins at the Canadian border. Up till then, we'll be spending gas out of our normal living expenses budget. Then, while our plans aren't set in stone, at the moment we won't be going further north than Fairbanks (and I'm not sure we'll even be stopping there.) Our primary goals are the 4 NPs in the southern portion of the state. Still lots of distance but I'm thinking it should be roughly half of the distance you took. So we still may be in the ballpark. Nice video to watch as you plan you next adventure. For your Alaska Plan you need to really evaluate your costs then add at least 50% additional for unexpected items just like the bearing cap that you lost. ( I think your estimate may need revising). ANY AND ALL parts or repairs will be extremely expensive on the way to Alaska and even small items for the truck, camper or other items you use regularly might need and wear and tear on the truck and camper could break your budget pretty quickly. Maybe look into some sort of travel insurance for just this trip. A couple hundred could save you thousands if a major item goes bad on the way or on the return. The other thing to consider is traveling West in the US instead of through Canada. Cost will be much less to go across the northern US compared to through Canada Providences. Any repair parts will be double cost in Canada especially all the Western areas. If you plan on waiting to get fuel and wait until you only can go 11 miles before empty that might be a huge issue to deal with as you head west. Try to go over everything beforehand and then go over everything again to be sure it is ready for trip. Not sure what extra stuff you guys have in the camper or carry but I usually carry extra wheel bearing kit, couple tire lugs, valve stem cap, bulbs for turn signals, assortment of different types of tape and a few other items that you can get here and save you money from buying on the road trip. Think about getting a 10 gallon or 2-5 gallon fuel tanks for diesel and this will give a little advantage in the event you need some “emergency reserve”. 10 gallons could possibly get you around 80-90 miles to next filling station. You should easily fit them in line with the water tanks you have in the back bed of the truck. Good luck and I will subscribe to the channel and look forward to future videos.
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 8 месяцев назад
Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment. So I (Joseph) am typically the gas daredevil, but when I get to Alaska you can bet I'll probably be stopping at every fuel stop I see - even if I just filled up 20 miles ago. That said, we currently have 1 5 gallon tank and if I have space I may get a second as well. I'm also looking into aftermarket larger fuel tanks for my model truck. They just tend to be pricey. As to budget - we don't plan on living off $!5K for the 3 months of travel - this is the "next egg" extra savings - and by taking the fuel expense out of our monthly budget that frees up money in there as well. We'll be in a pretty constant state of recalculating though as we go through the winter! -J
@drewskatmyselfdotcom
@drewskatmyselfdotcom 5 месяцев назад
@@OpenRoading You are correct about the high price of an aftermarket fuel tank, way too much. I went with 5, 5 gallon gas cans as a backup. Bought them on sale at $20 each, but could have got them for half of that if I got used ones.
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 5 месяцев назад
@@drewskatmyselfdotcom A follow up question! Did you end up using them, and how big is your tank to begin with? Going to Alaska sounds great, consider a auxiliary fuel tank , takes the stress out of finding fuel. I just returned from Texas towing a gooseneck horse trailer with living quarters and 4 mini’s and loads of stuff, filling up before leaving and stopping twice on the road for fuel traveling 1,850 miles home…. And how does your truck not overheat with your entire cooling system blocked by the motorcycle? That can not be good long term for engine with aluminum heads….

I know there's an aftermarket fuel tank for my truck that holds something like 56 gallons but it's runs on the order of $1,300 so I'm not sure that's in the cards as of yet but I should really consider it - or be really prepared on my fuel stop research. When it comes to the motorcycle carrier the oil temp does get a little warmer according to my onboard computer, especially in the middle of summer going up a mountain. I run 5w40 oil (which is the rec for severe duty for the truck) and I baby it as much as possible when towing. You may be right - we'll see how it rolls out in the future. I've been looking for ways to bring more air up into the radiators from below, or from around the bike but haven't come up with any great options yet. The general engine temp gauge has never gotten close to overheating so... 🤞🏻 (We've run this way for almost 3 years now). -J

Cinder passed this summer. She was a real spitfire who fought off an inner ear infection and another illness common to rabbits that left her with permanent head tilt. We’ll use the money to build back our savings and pay off our credit cards. Only complaint the RV park tries to commit you for a year. We pushed back and did 4 months instead of a year. @OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 5 месяцев назад
@@SaltySouthTexan Hi and thanks so much for weighing in. I think we didn't explain the $15K well enough. We are saving the $15K for specific expenses but we, of course, expect to spend more than that while we are up there. Our typical monthly expenses range from $3K-$5K so over the course of 3 months that would be $9-$15K. Of course we know gas and groceries are going to be more so that's why we moved gas specifically into this fund to free up the normal gas budget out of our other normal budget and that will go into food most likely. TL:DR this $15K in savings is $15K in the bank that we can pull from on top of our normal month to month budget. Watched the Hanks video last week and came away feeling really good about our numbers! I believe their only breakdown was a tire (+ RV damage from the tire), and the people they traveled with had a tire issue as well. Of course you can't predict everything. We could have 4 spare tires and have a head gasket blow. but we will do our best to be as prepared as we can be. -J

@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 4 месяца назад
Howdy. So I guess you can define broke how you will but here's how it all lays out when this was filmed. We sold our house in 2019 and from that purchased the RV and truck. We have no payments on them. We bought both used. The truck is a 2012 F250 (2 wheel drive) currently has over 200K miles on it. The RV is a 2005 jayco designer. Seriously almost 20 years old so I don't know how much money we could get for it if we tried to sell it. At the time of filming if the truck broke down and had a several thousand dollars repair we would have had to go into debt to fix it with no real way of looking to pay that debt off quickly. Our work from home business was barely making ends meet. No savings. No putting money aside, and certainly no money to continue traveling. In fact...campgrounds would have been an expense that would have sent us over the edge. So I don't know exactly how you define it but to me...that's broke. Not destitute - and not complaining - it's where we found ourselves through circumstances of our own making and some beyond our control. Also...the truck and RV are practically 100% of our assets minus a 9x9 storage unit that has more sentimental value than actual value. The only reason I'm posting this reply is not to be like "Look how broke I am" but because we do not do clickbait thumbnails. We want to show what the video is about but we aren't going to flat out lie for clicks. If you define broke a different way, that's fine...but for me if you are struggling to make ends meet I believe you qualify. -J
