@@literallyme6365 It pushed creative and narrative boundaries both focusing on an effectively entirely female cast while also tackling tackling topics that are considered especially progressive by even Western standards.
I was honestly shocked when mushoku tensei didn't get nominated to the things it deserves recognition for and I really hope that it gets more love despite the controversy it gets.
It's funny how the anime industries in the East are just cranking out hit after hit, but because they often have sexual themes in them, the Western anime industry has to both promote them but also kind of ignore them on a selective basis, see also; Ishuzoku Reviewers. When an anime with shocking or controversial stuff gets big, the Western PR seems unsure what to do with it.
If you look closely, you will notice "Cour 1" near Mushoku Tensei's name. That means that they dismissed the entire plot of MT starting from somewhere around episode 12, even though the 2-nd cour ended months ago. That gives us 2 pieces of crucial information: 1) The reason why MT wasn't nominated for best protag/girl/fight etc. 2) The judges recently had a lobotomy.
I think it might help Crunchyroll if they actually made their nominee selection process transparent. When is their cutoff for selecting the nominees in this year's awards? I have a slight suspicion that they may have selected them before Fall 2021 aired. If that's the case, a few things would make sense: 1) Mushoku Tensei, specifically cour 2, was not considered because at the time of nominees selection, it hadn't aired yet. 2) Demon Slayer Mugen Train movie was selected for this year's anime awards, because, again, it hadn't aired yet when they selected the movie nominations for 2020, so this year was their fair shot. There needs to be more transparency in this process, which r/anime does better, as you can ask the judges there why they selected their nominees. But that probably can't be replicated in CR anime awards, because it would just invite people flooding these judges with threats and stuff.
@@musketeer2727 That is definetly not the case because Ranking of Kings is in there, even though it aired after Mushoku Tensei aired. I think it's just that the people who decided the anime are completely braindead for doing such a thing. That, or there was some money involved. In both cases, fuck Crunchyroll.
@@Artrorit well they not brain dead or sort, there is just much of "correct" warriors in the west. Since CR is crater to those audience then it is not a shock. I have worries.. but it came true after all. There a reason i don't read/watch review or awards anymore unless it's fans/comunity made..
@@musketeer2727 yeah, agreed. I think it’s so stupid in this day and age when it’s so easy to gather and post the content and results that there’s just no excuse for not reviewing all airing shows of the year or not changing it to be summer season to the end of spring season the following year like we do with schools and such. They need to clearly define their qualifications and ban any judges who are basing their opinions on cultural issues of the time because of their high horse new found sense of morality against anything slightly suggestive. Liking a show that’s about awful people with questionable morales has no impact on whether the show itself is moral or not. Judge the art with the correct context and intent instead of some transitory societal trend that will likely swing back after the heavy over correction.
The r/anime awards are almost always a better representation of the year in anime than any other awards show. There are way more categories, way more options for nomination, the fanbase is smaller and more dedicated (which is a double-edged sword) and last, but not least, it's an independent initiative. When your favourite show doesn't get chosen for "best background art" or something similar you can actually go and read the jury's reasoning and, when all else fails, just call them names. The shorts category is the only one that's kinda shit, but there's 22 other categories that are very carefully chosen. I am guilty of picking Eren for both protagonist and antagonist for Crunchyroll's awards though. The memes must flow.
I think it is weird that Crunchyroll has no idea, that a character cant be protagonist and antagobist at the same time. They can be good and become evil, but as the MC he will always be the protagonist
While i hate some stuff on r/anime, the fact that you can actually call the jurors and they will most likely answer you giving their point of view is awesome ngnl.
I won't forget when they awarded Yuri on Ice for AOTY over Erased, Re Zero, BNHA and also when they awarded Yuri on Ice for Best Animation over Mob Psycho 100
They have to had been released in the us in 2021 somehow and violet evergarden got released 2020 on Netflix, if im not wrong and 2021 they had no best movie category sadly!

Yep, people honestly think they would jump into that PR nightmare? They are a company, they need investors and profit to put food on the table and media already love to target anime and games without they giving more amno. MT doesn’t need this award to be an instant cult classic and Crunchyroll survived both MHA Awards and YoI Awards, they’ll be just fine.
I suspect that it might be related to the fact that CR *doesn't hold any streaming licences for it.* ...I mean, Can't go around promoting shows that you have to watch on a competing service, am I right? Integrity? Huh, never heard of it...
@@biazacha Crunchyroll is owned by Sony, of course they do not need investors since Sony doesn't want to lose control of the company. Sony only cares that Crunchyroll is making money, and putting MT up there would do nothing against them. Even if it does cause a controversy, since Sony owns the two biggest anime broadcasting sites (Crunchyroll and Funimation), nothing would happen.
To Your Eternity not being nominated for Anime of the Year is such an egregious crime. This is why Under the Scope's Anime Awards is the real Anime Awards. Edit: I just got an idea from the NHL Awards. In the NHL, there's two MVP Awards. The Hart Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award. The Hart Trophy is the main MVP award voted by the professional analysts. But the Ted Lindsay is the MVP award voted by the players. Crunchyroll should do the same thing. Have two awards for each category. One for the critics opinion, and one for the fans' opinion.
Unpopular opinion, but to me To Your Eternity is not anime of the year material. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it is a bad show but after the second arc (March's story) it just gets really repetitive in his structure and predictable, killing his emotional potential and its transition to basically be a battle shounen is for me unnecessary. I'm guilty of having had high expectations of it since it is from the same author of Koe no Katachi, a movie that I absolutely loved, and I was expecting a similar approach in exploring the characters and themes in To Your Eternity after reading its synopsis. But after rewatching the show and then reading the manga from start to chapter 149 I still think the things I've said up on this wall of text about the anime. By the way I completely agree on your edit.
Phenom Im sorry to say but I'm confident it was an agenda that kept Mushoku Tensei out of more categories. Crunchyroll shot themselves in the foot with this one imo. Theres no real explanation other than they want to avoid the drama surrounding Mushoku Tensei.
That or they don't own the streaming rights to Mushoku Tensei and they didn't want to give all these accolades to a show that won't bring any traffic to their site.
@@ggadams639 lol that is bullshit😂 1. Rudeus is not a self insert MC much less of the author 2. The show doesn't want you to feel empathetic about his behavior, in fact, it is condemned in many instances, can't believe you didn't notice.
Crunchyrool is a company (as opposed to an association) that have a active stake in anime. So, of course they had a agenda in not nominating mushoko tensei as that would bring controversy to their doors. Do you really think someone is not going to write an article 'problematic anime nominated for best anime of the year'. This is the reason why I never liked this award show, bc it is owned by a company. Biasy would seep in sooner or later
@@OggerFN Trying to move away? Let's be honest here, Rudy gets better but the most fucked up stuff about him never gets adressed in WN and LN and almost surely won't get adressed in the anime.

But he got better, and don't forget in his universe there are lot more bad stuff others done that is normal/accepted by their society. Dude the only reason some people watch the Crunchyroll Anime Awards is for the guests. The only reason I ever watched it was because some of the Trash Taste guys were invited some time ago, that's it. Hearing CDawgVA say that Nina from Code Geass is the best girl, and the only reason he did to was because Gigguk asked him to, was on of the best thing on that damn event. The fact that almost no one there even knew who she was should tell you how much the people putting the whole thing on actually know about anime and what they vote for.
#1 Fix for Crunchroll Awards voting system: Please have a video next to every nominee that shows each of them in a light that uniquely helps you judge their qualification in case you have not seen or don't remember Winter anime as stongly. Like for best animation have 15 second of hand-picked/hand-edited sakuga of each nominee, but ESPECIALLY for Voice Acting PLEASE include the voice actor's performance for each nominee too. Like I swear they already did this in one of the previous Anime Awards - is this a step backwards???
Yeah the way the pushed WEP for a ton of categories wtf, while i hate it i can understand why jjk is again having like 10 nominations like last year bc is a really popular show, but WEP having 11 nominations and MT only 2? thats some serious bs.
PhenomSage, I'm so glad you brought CR's snubbing of Mushoku Tensei for an Anime of the Year award to light, but IMHO, I think you're being far too lenient with them over this. This was one of the most talked-about, critically acclaimed, and hands-down best anime of last year. It makes absolutely zero sense that any organization with the clout and resources to put together an official anime awards show would ignore it for a nomination that it by all rights, absolutely deserves. You say that you don't want to say that there was some kind of agenda being pushed here, but what else can be said for an act that is, for all intents and purposes, an insult to an anime that so justly deserves this nomination? Even if the reasons are for the elements of the lewdness and implied sexual content, they are really no excuse when you think about it. Awards should be given for objective criteria, like popularity, storytelling, critical acclaim, etc., not lack of offense. In my opinion, there is really no better explanation for this than something personal, or an agenda. And yes, I am a huge fan of this story, so my complaints here may be biased, but I feel that even if I didn't like it, the fact that CR nominates series from prior years over and over again and snubs well-deserved anime for categories they truly deserve a nomination in either shows some kind of agenda, or just the fact that the people in charge of these awards really are not very good at putting this together. And if Reddit can do this with far more consistency, fairness, and fewer issues, then I think that this gives even more credence to my point. Keep up your amazing work!
I couldn't have put it better myself. What I find even more insulting is that it was an anime that if nominated, as far as I and I assume most would agree, deserved to have straight up won in that category. Or at the very least was one of the top 3 highest condensers for winning.
I could understand not being nominated to best Protagonist or even AOTY if they were really worried about the loss of investors but soundtrack? Direction? Literally anime of the technical awards? Yeah they had them in the bag but didn’t got the chance to compete and that’s some major bs, is by far the most solid piece of animation that Japan released in 2021.
I think the cour 1 thing is the weirdest part. Did the jury vote for the 2 cours seperately and thats why they only got into so few categories since the votes are essentially halfed?
Eren is literally on both Best Antagonist and Best Protagonist and Echidna is on Best Antagonist when she is not an antagonist. I stopped paying attention to this annual shitshow after MHA swept the awards like twice in a row, but all my friends put it in my face and I just gotta eat up all the drama of one of the worst awards shows on the internet.
If not this year, I hope that when Mushoku Tensei comes back around later when Rudeus has grown up more and the controversial scenes are reduced that it gets nominated. I don't have very much respect for crunchyroll and this is just reducing it further.
@@GankBaronGuys that was an accident that he deeply regretted. Of course that’s why I said reduced though. Also that probably won't even be adapted. If it is, it won't be for a very long time (considering it's literally the final chapter the author has written in the series as of now).
@@GankBaronGuys Sorry to burst your bubble but that doesnt even happen in the main story. It happens in chapters that were written AFTER the author finished the main story. Plus Rudy didnt even do that intentionally so Im not sure why you bring it up.
Never liked the Crunchyroll's awards but still I'm happy that that make them because the whole internet took the idea and did it better, personally the reddit one and the "it's anime awards" from under the score (albeit not perfect) are the ones I enjoy the most each year
Mushoku is a story of the redemption of a man who reached the lowest of the low. About second chances. Is ironic they want to deny a chance to this anime. But is fine. There is a long journey left
Eren being nominated in best protagonist and best antagonist makes no sense logically, but tbh he kinda is the protagonist and the antagonist of the show.
It says a lot about the anime awards when a series with actual story pacing and narrative issues (wonder egg priority), was picked over a series that's only reason for not being awarded was sexual trigger warnings.
Do we really need to pick the "best of" in anime? The beautiful thing about anime and manga is that there is something for everything and everyone. Even in something as simple as an "animation award" is hard to pick, because there are several different styles of animation implemented. Some styles of animation are better than others, but the best animations are the best for so many different reasons. I believe movie and series awards are the reason why western media is so boring and shallow these days. We pick one option and say "this is the best", everything else becomes second place. It's an insult to the hard work put in so many good shows out there. The worst of all is that the majority just try to follow the trend of the "best ones", like isekai trends, idol group trends, mech trends. We should praise the best works out there equally. Not pick one "best" and disregard the others.
I think recognizing the creators work is very very important. Not only does it give them better chances to make new anime, it also supports the industry as a whole. Award shows are dumb most of the time, but recognizing the hard work of the creators and such is absolutely important.
I find nothing controversial about Mushoku Tensei , Rudeus being degenerate trash at times is staying true to its character , he is in mind 40+ year old otaku after all .
I’m a bit late to the party here, but I’ll say this: People are biased against Mushoku Tensei because of Rudy. It is that plain and simple. It is an objectively, incredibly well made anime regardless of whether you like Rudy’s character or not, and there’s just no arguing that. There’s a reason I don’t care about Crunchyroll’s anime awards. It’s almost entirely normie and they don’t care about actually giving the love and attention to the shows that deserve it. It’s just an overblown marketing ploy to promote their platform. MT deserved nothing less than to be anime of the year, though there were certainly other worthy contenders
People can argue that Crunchyroll Awards system is just a popular contest. BUT IT'S NOT. 70/30 judging system with only 6 nominees and unstable categories is a bullshit. The real popular contest with respect is Anime Trending Awards.
How was Re:Zero not nominated for more categories? It's one of the best Isekai anime out right now. How did Re:Zero do in the Reddit anime of the year poll? Does anyone know?
Fuck if you disagree with the themes or some scenes in MT ok I get it, it makes you uncomfortable, and that's the point. You are not supposed to look at the MC in the early arcs and admire him... He is supposed to be a perverted looser with social anxiety but I guess "real" character writing with uncomfortable moments is not good in a sea of Isekai protagonists who go from secluded loser shut-in to charismatic powerful hero by the end of EP1... But even if we put those plot points or even the writing as a whole aside, ignoring the consistently top-notch animation, backgrounds, direction, character design and soundtrack... This is certainly not an accident. Heck, there was so much effort in this production. This 23 ep anime had SIX distinct OP songs, SIX, in order to perfectly fit the mood of the corresponding arc. EP 1 of MT is probably among my personal top 5 best first episodes of all time. So good in fact that before EP 2 aired I already boosted through 4 LN volumes. That EP one sold me to binge all the novels within 2 weeks. Also, knowing which direction the plot takes, especially from vol 14 onwards I can say with certainty that if they continue to faithfully adapt the source material with that level of quality, we have the next decade-defining franchise following AoT right there. MT was avoided on purpose and I bet my money it's due to MT being discussed so controversially on Twitter. CR just feared that their awards might get cancelled if they nominate MT in any of the big categories.
It is fine.. Mushoku tensei first season is just polishing an expensive car The next season in a few months, is turning the car on. Season 3 and 4 are taking that expensive car for a ride.. And they will most likely take the anime of the year award. The story gets so good then, that even if i was to animate it, looking worse than seven deadly sins final seasons, and it would still take the anime of the year award Also, whatever happened it deserved a spot in best music category. The openings were beyond amazing
I wanna say, as a big fan of mushoku tensei myself (novels and anime), that I don't think the MT robbery is that bad. I do believe it should be in best direction and best protagonist, but I would also understand why they wouldn't put it in best protagonist (not just controversy, sometimes he's just kinda annoying and there are a lot of great protagonists out there). The other categories are really subjective, I personally wouldn't even put it in best music or character designs tbh. They might be influenced by how controversial the anime is, but there are other anime that I think would deserve way more recognition. The thing is, as you said, they can't please everyone. I'm really bothered by the fact that they put duplicates in some categories, and yeah the voting system is absolutely atrocious, as well as having the same anime win 2 times in a row. Of course we should acknowledge the (very big) flaws of this ceremony, but I wanted to nuance a bit Great video btw, as usual
@@colonelkenpachi5009 of course they are but for some categories like best animation you can be kind of objective. But a category like best Boy or best girl is entirely subjective so complaining that one character is not selected is a bit pointless. But yeah I would prefer legit judges, and also having an award not organized by a partial company obviously
These were the exact qualms I had with CR's awards. But what I didn't know was that they renominated JJK AGAIN for the 2nd cour. So how they snubbed MT must have been some sort of mistake because, if I remember right, the 2nd cour of MT was just as good (possibly even better) than the 1st. Yet it didn't receive multiple nominations? This is the type of stuff that made people who watch anime not pay attention to award shows, the blatant disregard for phenomenal shows in favor of pleasing the masses. The Grammys do it all the time, they can't even get animated shows right (nominating "Boss Baby" over "A Silent Voice"). I am a MT fan through and through, I love the series, so seeing it disregarded hurts because I genuinely think that the show has important lessons that everyone can learn from. It deserved a spot in most of those categories, even if the content isn't as pure and clean as they want, it still deserves a spot. I won't be surprised when CR nominates AOT for anime of the year even though what Eren does is completely reprehensible. I seriously doubt CR will ever change, they're slaves to what's mainstream and not what deserves recognition. That gives almost every anime fan a reason to ignore it, which they really should. Glad Reddit picked up the slack, fans can do it better than out-of-touch companies.
Didn't understand why Eren was both antagonist and protagonist either. By definition, they are mutually exclusive categories. And it's not even referring to AoT for different seasons/cours either, it's literally the same season. The only ways they could have screwed up worse is if they picked a girl as best boy or vice versa. I honestly hope Eren wins both nominations, so we can forever clown the CR Anime Awards as the terrible joke it is.
@@musketeer2727 Eren being nominated for both protagonist and antagonist actually makes sense, but I'm not going to go into spoilers here. Also he should win both.
@@RaffyDGoat By definition, a story's antagonist works against the protagonist, creating the story's conflict. So unless Eren is actively working against himself (which doesn't make logical sense), he can't be both.
Just want to mention that NONE of the Fate/Stay Night: Heavens Feel movies have even nominated in the movie categories (or any category for that matter) 😥
Now this, i agree. I'm super fucking pissed that DS won the best animation when only 5% of the people that watched DS know what Fate even is and why DS has any type of fame because of Fate's animation.
The list of judges is so weird. You have guys like Glass Reflection, I don't always agree with him but he's clearly earned his spot here. And then you have random Tiktokers that just post about anime. Also why is Wonder Egg being nominated in half of the categories ? I guess it was something fresh but I'm not sure if it deserves as many nominations when 2021 was so stacked. I guess a lot of people watched it and since it's a popularity contest..
I won't say wonder egg was a completely bad show, but I don't think it deserves a nomination here when what makes it a great show is just the first seven episodes and everything after that was a crash course on how to have pacing issues to confuse your entire audience. Also eren being both protag and antag is not possible and they should probably go back to english lit classes to understand the definition and differences of the two. So is Yano of Oddtaxj, he was an antagonist but he's like a secondary or tertiary antagonist against the MC in comparison to Tanaka, Sakura or even Dobu.
@@TequilaToothpick antagonist means that he opposes the protagonist. In order to know who the antagonist is one must find who the protag is, and the protag can be identified by asking who does the entire story revolve around? A side character can have focus for an arc or two but they will never take the place of the protagonist because one story will always have just one central plot that revolves around a central character. It should also be noted that antagonist and protagonist are character roles and not morality roles, so regardless of them being the villain or hero the antag and protag label does not change. That being said, can we still call eren an antagonist?
I just want to point out that, mugen Train... Literally movie animations which are cut into a series... Is nomimated for best animations... Do you consider this fair?
If anything Anime Awards are no Oscars, but like the Oscars they just pick the ones that are just easy wins and don't pick something that is a little bit more different and out of their comfort zone.
May as well read the manga series before voting and then watch the anime itself only to realize you got your anime of the year based on the manga or based on the first few episodes.
Honestly, MT not being among the nominees for Crunchyroll's anime of the year didn't surprise me one bit. I even expected this... because it's Crunchyroll. No way they were going to let an anime with such a controversial main character to be their AOTY.
Mushoku tensei even lost to slime isekai in the one category it was nominated in. Actual highway robbery Oh and I forgot to mention demon slayer beat it in animation when it shouldn’t have even counted because it was a movie
Mushoku is one of the best isekai I have ever seen. The world building and visuals are perfect. It is a masterclass of every isekai topic combined. Anime of the year imo, Re Zero and the few eps that aired in 2021 is the only other show I would consider
Eren as best protagonist makes sense. He's one of the main characters of the show, and we often follow his perspective. Eren as best antagonist makes sense. He's going against many of the main characters in the show, and he's often framed as the villain. I'd say he was a protagonist until halfway through Season 4 Part 1. Then he very clearly switched. Pretty much around "TATAKAE". And he's not simply an antihero or antivillain, either. Protag to antag is really the best description of the role he play in the story
My problem with the Mushoku Tensei nomination is that if they didn’t want Mushoku Tensei to cause controversy then why do they have two nominations for it. It is either do not display the controversial anime or fairly judge it by the quality. But what they did was a little of both, they advertised the show yet didn’t give the nomination for categories it could’ve contested. Their nomination choices do not make sense to what they’re promote/hide. Or I could be all wrong and given Mushoku Tensei to much praise when its, by the judges standards, lesser than the nominees they chose.
They probably did put in a bit just so they can say that they did. Now if someone says that there seems to be some sort of bias keeping Mushoku Tensei out the people behind it can say: but it is nominated for some things.
Honestly if mushoku tensei was at least on the list for the best anime of the year, I could almost forgive all the other flaws. But here we are and now I wanna murder. I go so far to say that it’s in my top five favorite anime of all time. And I’m not really even an Isekai fan. If that doesn’t tell you how much I love mushoku tensei show, I don’t know what will.
Remember 2017 was the Yuri on Ice award 2018 was the Macademia award 2019 was the Demon Slayer award 2020 idk 2021 was the Jujutsu Kaisen awards 2022 Jujutsu Kaisen/ Wonder Egg Priority/ Demon Slayer
One thing I do not understand is why Mugen Train was put up in many categories otherwise populated by weekly series. Apart from the things like best voice actor or best girl/boy maybe I think movies should be in seperate categories from series.
Y'all are hating on Tensura so much like bro chill. Re:Zero, MT, and Tensura are all good anime, it's just that tensura got lucky and got the award. No need to reviewbomb MAL and shitting on it
Ironically Mushoku Tensei demonstrates perfectly how someone like Rudeus becomes like he is, you show weakness like him and this world will at best ignore you and at worst treat you like an animal. They will shun you, disown you, beat you and no matter what you do, no matter how many good deeds you commit to, this world will never ever give you the time of day or empathize with your trauma. In fact they will exploit your trauma to the best of their ability just for thrill of hurting you on a deep philosophical level, and then turn around when you retaliate or falter just to rub it in your face and manipulate the situation to rally everyone around you against you.
Pretty sure the reason why they didn’t push for mushoku tensei was because their rights to license it got revoked or something. Or maybe they never had it in the first place? All I know is that you can’t find it on Crunchyroll but it is on funimation…
Im really disappointed and got a headache when mushoku tensei isn't even nominated look i understand the controversial stuff but that's the thing this show introduce us to people, flawed people and as the series progressed they are evolving as a person
The fact is that Crunchyroll isn't a fan award platform because their thumbs are already on the scale in their choice of category entrants. They've got a narrative to push, and it isn't an inclusive open appreciation for Japanese anime in all forms. This is why I don't give their weighted choices any credence any more than I'd trust MAL to have an unbiased ranking system.
Jobless reincarnation was amazing I even teered up a bit in a sentimental scene its writing is amazing and the jokes are hilarious despite being naughty a bit but thats what makes it different but the series was amazing people dont really give it much of a chance but its SO good the happiness of the cute chachters is happiness for you! I didnt give it much of a chance when I voted but once I did watch it I would have changed all my votes to vote for it not to mention a new season is in the works and I'm super excited to be able to see some of the chachters ive missed plus some of these nominiese have been delayed seasons for ages like rezero for example its been like over a year and more hell my own pride going against jujutsu kaisen I find both of equal par jujutsu may have a great amount of things to use for their series plus merch its suprising how it can go head to head to emotion and action jujutsu may be more smooth but its meant to be more realistic but jobless is more fantasy and I cant wait to see sylphiette again in mabye the next season but its coming out next year so i have something to look forward too
My guess as to why Mushoku Tensei possibly didn't get nominated for Anime of the Year is possibly because of the controversies of the show and that's how Crunchyroll is like. That's just my thought on it
Remember we are talking about Crunchyroll here that brought us shows like high guardian spice. So clearly they know what is good and what people like…..
Sorry, I'm Eastern, I don't know much about Crunchyroll so I might miss something, but I have a question, if they have JUJUTSU KAISEN (cour 2) on the list, why Demon Slayer isn't on the list?
