Okay, so we need to talk about men. Specifically how men interact with women in an excruciatingly binary way. And I don’t mean the percentage of men who are openly toxic and misogynist, I am talking about the misogyny that sort of routinely slips through the cracks without the man even being aware of it, and to be fair often without the woman noticing it either. One interesting aspect of having so many people giving me their reaction on me is that i get to see trends and patterns, almost sort of like a focus study or a small scale survey with feedback on me from just a whole lot of people.
I talk about:
- comments from men
- comments from women
- how i deal with misogyny
- mansplaining
- why men only consume content by men
- how men and women relate to each other
- romance books
- internalised sexism

I felt this, in my bones. I happen to be an expert in engineering- almost exclusively a male niche. And I also happen to be a woman interested in fashion. I got so many “advices” to tone down my appearance and fashion choices so my engineering expertise would not be judged based on my look. I am not dressed vulgar, or inappropriate. I am just dressed as a lady. But, apparently, if I plan to be “smart as man”, I also need to look like one.

As a man, I want to offer advice - and please, don't take this as demeaning or looking down in your job, just comraderie: Is not the matter of you "needing" for you to "not been seen as only pretty", or man wanting you to make "less feminine", it is just the matter that the job is that, in this type of jobs (Engineering, IT, and others of its kind) the important point to focus is the work itself - your appearence will be the LEAST important aspect in such field. And the demand for "proof of competence" is simply part of the job, and not simply because of gender (check how a newly hired person will be treated and you will be HORRIFIED). And in an area like Engineering (specially in Mechanical Engineering) the usage of any type of make-up or other "beautifying" arrangement will just be not only detrimental to your job, but DANGEROUS. I'm sorry if I came unnanounced, but I could not resist. I hope you can overcome the future.

@@Jamhael1 If you were right and the looks were the least important, why do you make it so important? Why not just focus on the knowledge and experience? While I would be studying a climbing route in the gym, I would constantly be told how to do the climb! Even by men who were completely novice. I would be polite and say thanks, I will climb it like a girl, LOL. I have been a truck driver/bus driver for 35 years. When I was actively training people to get their truck driver and bus driver license, behind the wheel, I also trained my husband. Once he got his license, after a few years he also became a trainer. Guess how many men and women assumed he trained me?

I could not even fathom trying to tell THE Jenny Mustard how to live her gorgeous and fulfilling life, seriously. I have learned so much from you in the 8 years I've been following your content (since I was 19, so during very formative years of my early adulthood!) and you've really helped influence - and even de-infulence - my ways of thinking about health, food, veganism, minimalism, mindfullness, and just what a happy life can look like, particularly as a woman who has always always known she did not want children. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you to the one and only Jenny Mustard for your content. (and bonus side thank you to David! :)

I’m 49 and have been single since I was 25. You just summed up exactly why I can’t stomach the company of men. I have noticed a big shift with the younger generation of men. However, being a Gen-X woman, I don’t see much difference to the men in my generation to most baby-boomers males. At least when it comes to dating them! This video is well said, and I LOVE it!

omg so your video about going offline for a while makes more sense now. I thought you meant just something like commentary videos like I watch, but men dm you like that all condescendingly! I think I had a manager like this once. I would say a fact I knew and he always had a reason I was wrong or that he didn’t believe me. And when he found out I was vegan he started trying to warn me that my dark chocolate might not be vegan (even though I had been doing it for like 7 years at that point). so annoying. also early lol

i don't get enough feedback to see this type of pattern in my own life, but i definitely notice that women public figures get tons of "expert" advice! i also wonder if the fact that ordinary women don't typically see the pattern contributes to the success of alpha-male-type content creators who make dating advice videos geared towards women.

Keep growing, learning and never give your values away. One day there will be the "real" strong men, which are capable to handle a "strong" lady. One day the world will know that strong women are furthermore empowering men instead of wrecking their ego.

I definitely have male friends who are self proclaimed feminists who do exactly this - my taste in music, books, my technical knowledge, banking / economics knowledge (even though I work in a bank for over ten years) all of it is basically wrong or should be corrected. Even specifically female experiences - such as the princess/ Prince Charming fairy tale or women as helpers in relationships - should be opined on/ is wrong.

Typical mansplaining. They are trying to "fix" what is presented to them. Not an excuse. I hate it myself and it happens all the time. Even when a man knows my education and skill set, they will "explain" my job and how to do it better even when they have no clue. Ugh.

Very sad that we all kind of expect these types of comments. I’m not an influencer but this type of communication and condescension by men is apparent in real life (I used to work in a male dominated field so I caught on quickly). It’s quite irritating and Im at an age where I have no issue with saying men do this in general, because the men that don’t engage in this behavior understand that they are not the issue and don’t take offense to it. I have no issue calling out sexism as I see it, and I wish other men would check each other but oh well…

Unsolicited, and yet solicited by the actions of most men, questions that men should ask themselves before they “chime in”: 1) did anyone ask? 2) how much have I been speaking compared to the other people in the space? 3) what is the purpose of my commentary? 3.1) did anyone ask? 4) if i am tempted to comment on a woman’s actions, what are the chances that she doesn’t have access to the internet? 5) what are the chances I look like someone who has already made condescending comments to this person about this very thing? 6) what’s the worst that can happen if I don’t comment? 7) does the devil really need an advocate and why do I deem myself qualified to fill the position? 8) what are 5 better uses of my time?
