In 1996 five spicy girls broke out to become the biggest group in the world... for two short years.
Since they disbanded in 2000, it seems that the world has forgotten how they were ever popular in the first place. Why?

I was a young teenager in 1996. I was dancing in a club one night in 1996 and they played wannabe. I had no idea who sang it but I remember thinking that they sounded very brazen and bold. I went to the bar for a beer and asked the bar man who sang that song. A week later all the children were dressing as a spice girl .no joke. Then my little sister loved baby spice and we decided to dress her like Emma. She was so beautiful. Little butterflies in her blond hair and everything. By this stage, spice girls were everywhere here in Ireland. You could not escape it. But it brings back happier times to me now. I remember people falling in big shoes in those days to. Shoes were big yokes then. Lol

Everyone gets the call and response in Wannabe wrong. It’s not Geri making the “huh” sound. It’s Mel C. So the call and response is between the two Mel’s. The fact that Geri’s got her mouth open and the camera is still on her makes it look like it’s her. But it’s not, it’s Sporty. Watch the song live and you’ll see it.

Your commentary on pop culture is brilliant. I was caught in the spice craze as of today I feel the general public see them as a 90s children pop act rather than credible artist, with Mel C being closest to credible for vocals. Yet like you said at the time they were loved by public figures and embraced in pop culture in a major way. How times do change

No no.. Spice Girls were less like The Beatles and more like The Monkees, who were treated with the same disregard due to being four actors cast as musicians for a TV show, yet they earned #1 hits and have a huge fanbase. In actuality, the four actors thought they were hired for their musical ability (singers, songwriters, musicians) but the hollywood machine had to churn out weekly hits so they hired songwriters and musicians and had the four actors sing as well as do the weekly TV show. People called them the "pre-fab four" (prefabricated) and never took them seriously. Eventually they fired their producer and became a real band, but the rumor that they couldn't song-write or play instruments has always haunted them.

Except the Spice Girls were one of the few pop groups that actually wrote all their own songs. Every song on all 3 of their studios albums was written by them, including every #1 hit they have ever had. This means that each Spice Girl gets royalties for every song of theirs that is played or used in media, which makes each of them rich.

Also, that Spice Invaders song, Jesus, I know it’s ridiculous but I used to listen to that song on repeat when I was a kid because it felt like chilling with friends. I wore the tape out. Lastly, the B Side to Say You’ll Be There, Take Me Home is criminally underrated.

@@user-dv6fz2gq7h No, you don’t get it. It doesn’t matter that it’s playback. They were at the peak of their power, it was the 90’s, you couldn’t just go on their Twitter to see what they were doing or watch their music videos on RU-vid, you were sat there watching it in your living room with the rest of the Country. The energy in that stadium can be felt. From the introduction to the walk down to the song kicking in. And then it was cherried on top by Geri’s dress. There’s nothing remarkable about any of these women and none of them are winning singing contests individually but together, in this moment, they were *untouchable* . I truly believe it all comes down to what was stated above. The "Monkees Syndrom" Everyonde knows the story....man named Brady meets lovely lady...er, no....genie in a bottle, rubbed the right way...nope....the whole started as girls who answered call ad, got picked, lived together, was "manufactured", said h to the f no and ran, did their own thing. Unfortunately, co-wrote all their songs, had major ideas that turned into chart-topping realities, intertwined the shit names some lazy reporter gave them and wove that into their individuality stance, and generally did whatever they wanted to do get dropped from that did their own thing umbrella. They were considered "Pure Pop" and even to this day, most acts don't want to be associated with that. There's some stupid stigma on that which I never understood, It took Mel C DECADES to overcome that. Never be ashamed of where you came from. It's how you got to where you are. Admit it, we would all collectively crap our pants if Miley ever dropped a "Best Of Both Worlds" beat in a concert. And she should. (Well, legalities aside, I'm sure).

Approx 90% of the music I listen too is from the UK. I think the Spice Girls opened the door for me to listen to all these artists. I was a child when they were huge and now I listen to artists from the UK from the 80’s to now. The Spice Girls taught me about the UK music and the British flag. I remember being 8 years old being in awe of London. Still to this day, I want to travel all over the Uk. I do have British/Scottish lineage on my fathers side, so maybe I feel a connection to it.

you gotta love "something kinda funny", the beat is very similar harmonically to "ma quale idea" by pino d'angiò who basically took the bass line from mcfadden and whitehead's "ain't no stopping us now", played it slower and rapped on it (which was mindblowingly ahead of its time for 1980 italy). both of these songs are eternal hits and "something kinda funny" sounds like a 90's american r'n'b version of "ma quale idea" with a sort of simplified bass line, but the catcthy vibe is undoubtedly still there. that's some clever production right there, you take a formula that 's worked well in the past and make it your own. amazing video btw, keep it up

Now i watched the entire thing. Oh my goodness you covered it entirely so well. The firing of the manager leading to more work/exhaustion later, the lack of cooperation & splitting the group across hemispheres (defeating any chance of performance, like it was a book tour or something?) as a terrible promo for the third album, etc etc. The Forever "era" (or even, I think, the "post Fuller" era) is truly rife with some things. I watch interviews from that time (Emma & Victoria came to the US, where I'm from) & it just wasn't the same. I of course bought the album & was crushed when it wasn't a hit & had zero promo. I still love Holler but yes it totally sounds like a lot of R&B of the time. etc. etc. I could go on but what a great video!! Thanks for making this!!!

Almost everyone knows about the Spice Girls. Those of us that lived through the nineties were completely saturated by all the publicity, so most of us don't need reminding what it was like. I was quite surprised that I learned a few things from the video, and I think it will be a slow-burner on RU-vid in the coming years as more and more people want to discover or rediscover the Spice Girls. Right now isn't the right time for a revival. Mainly because the band was SO FAMOUS, it feels too soon. (Note that no one was interested in the Beatles in the late '70s and early '80s. It wasn't until the 25th anniversary of Sgt Pepper that interest began re-igniting. Maybe the Spice revival can only happen if the women disappear off the telly/tabloids for a few years).

I love "Spiceworld", to me it is their best album. It's pure bubble gum pop. No it's not very edgy but Bubble Gum pop is meant to be light, fluffy and fun, it's not supposed to be edgy. It didn't need to be risque or sexual like their other two albums. It is also their most diverse and eclectic album with every song sounding unique and different. And if they were so pressed for songs, when why didn't they release "Leader of the Gang" on the album or at least have it be a b-side?

Because - as pointed out in the video - of the association with the original artist, who turned out to be a nonce.

The Gary Glitter song? After the child porn allegations, he was the most unpopular man in Britain. It would have been a PR disaster to do anything that would mean he got paid royalties. It would be like releasing a cover version of the Jim'll Fixit theme tune. When your target market is 4-8 year olds (and you need their parents to buy all your records and mercy) it's not a good idea to have a connection to a famous paedophile.

Great video and I love the Spice Girls. Very informative and delving into them in a way that I really haven't seen anyone talk about. I love them but they very much did over saturate themselves very quickly, but I don't think we'll see anything like them again. Also big ups on using that Sonic Mega Collection background music when you view the comics for the Spice Shrine.

You didn't talk about "Naked" on the first album. That song really showcased their individual vocals. On the 2nd album, they could have used "Outer Space Girls" rather than "Move Over"

Very good documentary! I learned a lot! I had no idea they made the movie and the album simultaneously plus promotion! you are such a fan, it warms my heart! :D They were the fist group I was ever a fan of! All of my friends were only listening to the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync, (hah, losers! don't know true quality ;p), it is forever a shame we only got 2 albums from them :( To have lived in the UK at that time must have been crazy!

Came here after the valerie video and man i love the way you coment. Yeah they shouldn't have switch to make music for kids audience only, since we (back then i was a 9 yo kid ) loved them for wannabe and i didn't get the sexualized lyrics or outfits i just loved to see 5 friends having a blast. tbh I also want to point out misogyny (as why they're not remembered ). People in general hate whatever girls in their teens love. It's like a morbid pleasure to despite what teenagers like. It happenes to twilight movies/books too (this one is based con lindsay ellis video aboyt twilight).

At first, I was hesitant about watching your video, assuming you'd slag them off or talk crap about them but I pleasantly surprised. You were honest and blunt, but still love them and it shows. Love your sense of humor, and I never knew until now that Emma took that homeless man's hat! How dare she lol. Great video, great critiques, well done. I don't agree with you on everything but you did your research and this was very well done. I'm glad you made the video to show the younger generations how it really was back then. They were overworked, exhausted but made great music and changed the course of music history forever. So, thank you.

This video really does sum up the phenomenon that was the Spice Girls. Their first album was like r&b lite and introduced their more risqué lyrics and messaging while their second album has a lot of songs that seem more like “ideas for songs.” Their grueling schedule and constant merchandising was cool to revisit in depth (ie Chupa Chups branding to target Spain) this video is a fascinating, almost step by step study in pop culture and music; overall a nice tribute to Scary, Baby, Ginger, Posh & Sporty.

That BRIT Awards performance represented the entire nation of Britain collectively saying "oh we are so fucking back". In an age where Britain couldn't be further into its "it's so over" era, it's hard not to see the blinding optimism of the Spice Girls and yearn for simpler times.

They are still pretty big- any release associated with them is a pretty hot seller (vinyls, mercy, recent tour) Lots of younger people do love them. Honestly since them, no girl group (aside from destiny’s child) got that massive Acts like sugar babes, girls aloud, all saints.. etc barely have an audience outside of Europe Newer acts like pussycat dolls, little mix, fifth harmony.they barely made an impact outside of a few forgettable hits Spice girls hit the massive fame, success and the icon status (a word overused)

They are definitely still remembered, “Wannabe” has been streamed around 600 million times on Spotify since that launched in '08. But I still think he has a point about them receiving less attention from critical or institutional corners than you'd expect for a group that was that iconic.

@@RedSkylinex60 as someone born/raised in the USA it’s quite clear why they never made it big in the USA. It’s not the quality of their music (that rarely matters in the USA) however there is a quality of production that isn’t quite there compared to spice girls or other crossover acts
@RedSkylinex60
@RedSkylinex60 2 года назад
@@vibeology9432 I’m American as well, some of the British artists from the 90s 00s sounds different from most the American stuff of that era, it has this interesting vibe to it that I can’t explain. Maybe if they had a worked with a producer like Babyface or Max Martin they probably could’ve made it big here but that probably would’ve killed their uniqueness. Those are just my opinions.
@husamelzien5738
@husamelzien5738 Год назад
@@RedSkylinex60 I honestly think they had songs that could’ve fit decently well on US radio. Overload, Run for Cover, Round Round, Angels with Dirty Faces, In the Middle, No Can Do.
