Sadly, if you have ransomware insurance, what the insurance do is that they actually pay the criminals on their behalf. This is a controversy that has been a topic for a very long time. There is an article on ars about it.

They're still paying the folks ruining gaming, though. The leak just brought up some evidence.

On the other hand, not paying could result in bankruptcy. They could probably easily have gotten away with paying 2M. Now they might lose all their worth from lost sales, decreased trust and multiple lawsuits from not keeping private data safe. What's worse, giving people who already have tons of money more money, or killing your company? After all you won't help stop them by not complying, as tons of companies do pay up without the public ever getting to know (which will never stop since not getting non-backed up data back will ruin many companies), it's not like they need much funding anyway, yet they get hundreds if not tens of thousands times that. The only remedy for this is to vigorously secure your systems, encrypt your data when feasible, have backups and even air gaps to separate local networks not connected to the internet.

Seconded. Had to pick up an overtime shift recently helping another team's client after they got nailed by ransomware earlier this year. Even just one night of running damage control on that was awful.

My brother got his ID hacked and credit tooken out in his name without his authorization. Its ducking disgusting how easily these cyber Stealers get away with it and how the system pins the responsibility on the victim despite it being the very system fault for not having proper Protections in place. So many red flags yet they get ignored.

Im pretty sure that's not the problem, the problem is the leaks not data loss

I have seen hospitals pay the ransom rather than restore backups. Why? Because the backup team was underfunded as in the restore processed would take too long since no proper protocalls excisted and the backups where not frequently tested. It is sadly a calculated risk by most companies to rather save money now and see what happens when it does.

@The Poison Donut The backup servers should have between a day or week of data on them. Older data should be on offline drives.

I would assume a full backup done weekly with daily deltas. Trashing the backup server would slow things down when recovering as you'd have to rebuild the server and then the catalog. If you knew what their backup software was and had some knowledge of how to use it, one could mark the backups as expired. If backups go to a data domain device (essentially a big stack of disk's) the hacker could then run a space reclamation process to attempt to wipe them. If the backups get written to tape then those would be safe.

@@christuckwell3185 Enterprise solutions back up everything incrementally (hourly for a week/daily for a month and so on) and always use tapes. With everything mirrored at another location - if it is critically enought. If my company building would burn down, Id be able to work (remote) again within a couple of hours (in theory hopefully). We host a couple things that have to be always available.

I wouldn't call it "massive" yet but if the whole terabyte is eventually released then it'll be a leak on a scale beyond anything we've ever seen.

People need to realize its a flood of information taking place, not a leak. Leaks are something that can be patched up, but once the floodgates open, there's no stopping it until there's nothing left.

@@bwedges I am sorry to read that. First is knowing how did they got in, if you cannot, then format and reinstall everything to eliminate any possible malware. Remember to never have user accounts with passwords being the same as the username, or completely deactivate remote access if you don't use it. Then setup an automatic backup system using free tools like "easeus todo backup free" or similar, and tools to automatically mount and unmount, the destination drive of the backups, before and after the backing up process. That was what saved me from the attack and only lost 2 days of work. It's a bit overkill for home users though.

Which is hilarious, as they have all the money in the world to hire security consultants for such a system.

@J Fz That's why regular cybersecurity courses are so important. I talked to so many employees and even bosses who don't know a thing about it. The worst story was when one of our customers had a ransomware attack happen to them and when I talked to the boss he told me that he opens every job application mail attachment (no matter the file format) because he could get a great employee out of it. My colleagues and I told him how bad that is. The whole company couldn't work during the time we rolled back the servers. He lost two weeks of data, 3 full days of work and the money it cost him to hire us to fix the mess (our work is not cheap). In the end he realized how NOT worth it is.

Lol leaking data of older titles is not the criteria for it to be ok in any way.

The Gigaleak felt more exciting to me though because we got a load of behind-the-scenes game assets from it, including graphics files and prototype builds from prerelease versions of some of Nintendo's biggest hits from the 90's. I mean, not to dunk of DMC2's source code, but it's not Capcom Fighting All-Stars, or the scrapped Maverick Hunter X sequels/Mega Man Mania for GBA/redone MMX4 voice acting, or all those scrapped Mega Man games from the X360/PS3 era, or a better build of RE1.5 than what we got, or any early version of a Street Fighter game with scrapped concepts.

11 million is pretty outrageous, but I'm not sure Capcom would bite even if it was 500,000. You can never trust a ransomware group to do what they say they're going to do. More often than not they just disappear without giving the decryption key.

@@happyguy5025 Yes, and it's not stupidity as it's entirely secure. It's virtually impossible to get caught on the multi-proxy-layer marketplaces where this takes place, and you'd pay with bitcoin or similar; none of it is traceable in the slightest, the risk would be going public with whatever result the buyer makes from the purchases. Even without those specialized networks, you could use a prepaid simcard in a USB internet dongle, possibly in combination with a VPN. You could even route your connection through the dongle, through VPN and through various multi-layer proxy networks simultaneously, that's 5-6 layers of anonymization, one of which would be sufficient. There's a huge market selling all kinds of shit anonymously, from zero-day vulnerabilities which might be used in ransomware to penetrate systems, to drugs sent to anonymous post boxes, to stolen credit card information. The vast amount of ransomware groups strife to hold up their bargain, as not doing so would cause future victims to not pay. Same goes with anonymous market transactions, the seller has a reputation to maintain. Regarding the 11M, they could probably have gotten away with saying "We'll pay 2, take it or leave it"; it's common to bargain with them. That said, the Japanese are very honorable people, so it's not a surprise they refuse to pay anything out of principle, even if it means multitudes more damage cost than the full demand (CapCom's market capital is $700 billion; the ransom demand is 0.0014% that). Unfortunately it doesn't change anything, plenty companies pay and in the vast amount of cases the public never gets to know; lots of companies simply have to if they want to survive (they might even have ransom insurance that does it for them), if not because they depend on their data, because they could be sued into bankruptcy for failing to protect sensitive data of 3rd parties. The only way to avoid things getting to that stage is to vigorously protect your data and implement strict policies; backup to read-only archives or air-gapped networks if sensitive, encrypt sensitive data when not in use, prohibit your employees from plugging USB or memory cards into their computers etc. For example, my mom works at a power plant; they're not allowed to open mail attachments from untrusted sources, plug USB drives into their work PC's (which they can bring home) or install anything. They have a machine dedicated to scanning USB drives brought in, before they're allowed to be plugged into their system. A sophisticated attack taking advantage of software vulnerabilities would still compromise them, but at least they're taking serious measures, and their critical systems aren't online (but they could still get hit by an air-gap jumping attack via USB, though incredibly rare); after all most run-of-the-mill ransomware enters via mail attachments anyway. In any case, you can never fully protect your system, especially when plugged into the internet; never believe you're fully secure, but at least you can protect your backups.

I wish it was, but a lot of stuff had happened along the way which may lead to the project being abandoned (even tho it looks it has already been). The main creative head for Deep Down left Capcom last year I think I read somewhere, and last time I checked, the project was apparently "restarted" as they had it difficult to make the game work when they barely had an idea of what the game would be about. It's sad, really. I was very much looking forward to Deep Down being released, or at the very least, have some news about it, but from what I read, I think we should just throw it under the rug like Capcom did, and move on

We are so past deep down, dragon's dogma 2 is being teased. It may not be your cup of tea, but it's probably a better investment of your time waiting for that to come out.

With the Netflix animation (which I still haven't seen) I think they are trying to gauge if people are still interested in the franchise and work from there. So they know what and how much to send.
