We need to talk about the Minecraft community.

Do you get the sense that the Minecraft community has become increasingly toxic, angry, and hostile? Why is that? I think I might have some explanations.
All quotes in this video are from real people, but do NOT search for them or harass them.

@@kota1471to me, it’s more about the principle. When something is shown and then ripped away from you, it’s pretty annoying. Even though they never promised to add fireflies, I’m not upset they didn’t get added (well, maybe a little bit since they would be the only ambient mob that actually feels like an ambient mob) but I’m disappointed in Mojang for making a really dumb excuse for not adding them instead of just saying they didn’t want to add them.

I genuinely wonder how different both the game and the community would be by now if Mojang had never got bought out by Microsoft and stayed indie
@RandomSageless
@RandomSageless 5 месяцев назад
A big reason Microsoft owns Mojang is because of the 2014 EULA changes that cracked down on P2W servers. Server owners lied about the content of the new EULA and sent hordes of players to harass developers and throw a massive fit over nothing, with much of it being targeted towards Notch, who wasn't even working on the game anymore, leading to kind of a mental breakdown that ended with him selling the studio in the heat of the moment. End of the day the community has been the best, and worst thing to happen to the game

I think one of the main factors of how toxic the Minecraft community is is its _size._ The Minecraft community is MASSIVE, one of the biggest fanbases in the world. And everybody has their own opinions of how things should be and how the game should be played/made. There are literally entire portions of the community that play on a version of the game that's over 10 years old, people who play for survival aspects, people who play for the building aspects, people who play modded, people who play exclusively multiplayer, literal children, and fully grown adults. There's SO MUCH diversity within the community that its very rare for everyone to agree on something.
@qoganjacks146
@qoganjacks146 4 месяца назад
That's the facts. It's crazy that a silly block game has a community that made of three different generations 🤯. No wonder why's there so many controversy. I just feel bad for Mojang to be a developer of such a megnet of criticism.
@astroidexadam5976
@astroidexadam5976 4 месяца назад
For people who play on old versions there are people who play on even older versions than 1.8.9, some still play on 1.7.10 because of the mods and some even refuse to move past beta 1.7.3 and see it as the best update ever that no other modern version will ever top(I know that beta world generation was better than beta 1.8 to 1.6.4)

The problems with what Mojang did there was that they blamed people: “your being upset was your fault, not ours”. That really pisses people off. If they had said , “we know we showed it, and we really did try, but have forced us to pull back on some of the concepts we showed. We are sorry.” it would have been taken much better. But the reasons would need to be real. If they want to have open communication, they need to be more up-front and honest, something they aren’t great at.

the fireflies thing also doesn't help that they said *most* fireflies were toxic to toads and frogs. Mojang could have totally picked a different type of firefly that wasn't toxic to frogs, but they just didn't. I'm also still a bit upset about fireflies. Imagine how much more magical a lot of builds would look with the addition of fireflies. I hope they add them in a later update. They could've made firefly jars to give fireflies a purpose, they could add butterflies, maybe even small birds that DO eat fireflies, if fireflies aren't enough of an incentive for even a minor update. I've been playing minecraft since alpha 1.5_01 off and on. I've seen the ups and downs of the development throughout. Personally I couldn't care less about many of these changes, I have my gripes but that's all it is. I mainly like to hear peoples' thoughts on things and every year it's nonstop doom and gloom, at least lately. It's all about sensationalism and clickbait at this point from what I can gather. I 10000% agree with your points about being in an echo chamber. I too am susceptible to it, everyone is but that's when I try to take a step back and pump the brakes a bit. In the grand scheme, most players are casuals and people need to accept it. I spend a majority of my time in Final Fantasy XIV these days and its the same ordeal. The hardcore players are upset about the tiniest changes to the game all because the devs are trying to maintain a balance and appeal to casuals at the same time. It becomes arguments of "its not the same anymore!" and the cycle repeats with talks of doom and gloom. While I'm just here doing my own thing and trying to brush off those types of players.

The problem with chat reporting is that it was being forced upon PRIVATE, DECENTRALIZED servers, with their own mod teams and their own rules. Mojang could police and potentially ban you from a server YOU host and own the hardware for. It wouldn't have been an issue if it was confined to Realms, which ARE centralized, but logging into any server that doesn't have a report-blocking mod runs the risk of Mojang taking your 30 bucks back by shutting off multiplayer forever... and that's without touching on the lack of an appeals process and admitted inability to tell legit bad behavior from account theft.

A very major thing that mojang keep overlooking, in my opinion, is adding new features instead of improving upon old ones. The nether update was so good because it overhauled a part of the game that really felt unfinished compared to the rest of the game. I'm not going to pretend like I know everything but it seems like mojang keep trying to make the updates more and more grand and ambitious but the game would benefit way more from just improving existing features. It's upsetting to see mobs like the phantoms get added and then mojang seemingly go "oh well, we tried guys, sorry." Please, stop trying to be ambitious, just be smart about features and play test them and talk with the community about it and improve the game without adding 3 new biomes. I definitely think there should be an update that adds some/all mob vote mobs that lost, or at least their functionalities. Not only would that get rid of most* mob vote backlash, but it's also a safe move, and Mojang loves those nowadays. That said, I never find it realistic to think that Mojang would "listen to the community" and "add all 3" right after the mobs are revealed. After all, by the point the trailers come out they would've already planned out a certain amount of resources to go to the main update, with just enough left for one extra mob (the winner). *I say "most" here since the mobs themselves are still one-note, and none are particularly useful. The allay does as much for the game as glow squid, but the community chalks that up to "we must have picked wrong" instead of "they're never that complex".

Mojang is a multi billion company owned by a 2,78 trillion company called Microsoft. They have more than enough time, money and people to add all mobs. I think the real reason why fireflies weren't added is because the design was bad and everyone made fun of it. They realized they needed to give them proper models, but then having a lot of fireflies wasn't possible because entities create a ton of lag on Java (due to interaction with frogs they had to be entities and couldn't have been particles). Maybe Mojang should start listening to their community for once. Maybe when Hytale finally arrives they'll wake up. This happens with all franchises that are considered to be on a downhill track. Pokémon is another good example of a series that once attracted mostly positivity, while nowadays it gets dunked on by many. Developers get complacent because their game is practically too big to fail, so no matter what they do, they'll always have a loyal following. It's easier and more profitable to do the bare minimum and lose a portion of your playerbase than to put in the effort and passion to make something that resonates with your main playerbase.

Funny... but also... important to note, the dangers are very real. Very. Very real. And they are right, this was done to do so, good intentions can often be misinterpreted as a conspiracy theory or a malicious move. That can be one argument in favor of saying that the community, not Mojang nor Microsoft, is ruining Minecraft. Well, most misinformed people in the community are ruining Minecraft. They antagonize Mojang's developers, whom I treat with utmost maximum respect. Though I do not trust Big Tech companies as a whole, like Google or Microsoft, probably due to questionable practices and monopolistic approaches, there can be great things from them. If they change gears, shifting from profit as number one priority to that of caring for the customers, then their profit would ironically explode while giving them a better reputation. The only things holding them back are the focus on short-term gains as well as the desire to always have more money, without giving anything or some money in return, which could be seen as avarice to some. So we have to be cautious on what we say online, because a domino effect could happen.

How people reacted to chat reporting really wasn't an unfair reaction. Missing out on a feature you wanted is one thing, but being permanently banned without good reason is unacceptable. Modders can, and have, added missing features to the game, often with better implementation than Mojang did. When it comes to being banned, it's entirely outside of you or the community's control. It's practically an anti-feature. With how nebulously it was implemented, the only way to be safe would be if they removed the chat function entirely.

I would really, really love to see more positivity, less hate towards each other and especially the developers come back to Minecraft community as a whole. I have been called out dumb and conformist to Mojang multiple times in the community, even though that's literally the exact opposite of who, what, why and how I am. I try my best to acknowledge people's issues with the modern version of Mojang while also trying to reasonably stay on side of Mojang themselves, their own issues and what might be happening. I do highly believe no one has the high ground in this situation of how Minecraft looks like currently - Neither the community around the game nor Mojang themselves are doing things right and from that comes the conflict, which people actively try and make worse with time, rather than trying to solve it and go back to being peaceful. I'm also very inclined to believe that had people been more reasonable and friendly, we could have had gotten better, more transparent responses from Mojang and maybe even more cooperation with fans and players once more just like we were doing it years ago. The issue is, people can't see past themselves, past their anger, expectations and everything that makes up a horrible human being - Once again, they certainly have a lot of valid reasons to get angry over, but that doesn't mean we should not respect each other, developers or the content they give us entirely for free all the time anyway. The hardcore community players engaged highly in the community do have their valid points but so do we, the more casual players, and so does Mojang themselves. I can bet that the reason Mojang refuses to work with community as of right now, acting more transparent and honest about everything is specifically because of community's outrage being bigger than it has had ever been before.

I don’t blame them at all and I do wish we could be friendlier to them so they could feel comfortable talking with the community. Short answer: Microsoft. Long answer: It’s definitely because of how corporate the Minecraft brand has become. They no longer allow C418 to make music without getting their grimy hands all over the rights to his songs, their Instagram page is full of these shitty “corporate veneer” infographics, and Mojang as a whole has been keeping it safe while updating their game, adding mobs that, while cool and fresh on the surface, only have one specific niche use each. What happened to updates like 1.16? We need more fantasy creatures, not more real life animals. Also they need to just get rid of the mob vote it clearly causes too much controversy for it to ever be worthwhile. The recent updates haven’t added to the game; they’ve cluttered it. And ALL this isn’t even including horrible updates like 1.19’s chat reporting AND all of the recent rushed updates cause “oh man, we gotta release bi-annual updates so our game can remain relevant!” like- yes they’ve gotten better at this but it sucks when they over-promise and then under-deliver (insert firefly reference here). Minecraft is ultimately too big to fail but Microsoft needs to stop shoving random IP’s into their game to sell on the fucking bedrock marketplace and instead take their time and make good updates. They had a streak going from 2019-2021. I just wish they’d set their priorities straight. All of this corporatization from microsoft and poor communication from mojang just made the playerbase so jaded that we’ve returned to really bad levels of toxicity.. it’s unfortunate, really.

It made the tech tree larger by adding netherite and added awesome new mobs like piglins, hoglins, and striders. But why all of a sudden does there need to be a ‘big update’ in order to bring good content like 1.16? You don’t have to update a whole dimension to create useful, worthwhile additions to Minecraft. Like dude. Come on. You cannot tell me the sniffer is a useful addition💀 it literally added two plants. Two plants that are decorative. Oh yeah and they craft dyes I guess. Like- okay… if Mojang wanted to give us more ways to craft dyes then why not give us a plant besides cactus to give us green dye? Nah they’ll just craft orange and cyan for no reason lol. Like- compare that to the piglin. It’s genuinely appalling these two mobs were created by the same devs. Piglins are extremely multi-layered, they have their own structure, they barter with the player, they have complex interactions with other mobs AND blocks, and they come in variants as well. I Genuinely think the root of the problem is Mojang. They have continued to leave speculation for how a feature would be implemented, they should state the intentions of how far it would go. I think that's why the Crab Claw among discussion communities and thus polls was winning; speculation for it was high in spite of mojang actually being fairly clear. Also like, the Armadillo won off the wolf armour, hence won off the back of the mob vote so it's not the general playerbase. Actual Number of votes compared to the overall amount of people who play minecraft are small. (for the record, I voted penguin - felt there was least room for over-enthusiastic speculation and gave flavour to a biome that is unlikely to ever get one) The negativity arises from discussion and critiques about Mojang, and the more they repeat to fail to take into account critiques the more the negativity becomes entrenched as genuinely something that is just negative from the get-go. Chat reporting came at a bad time, but it also showcased Mojang breaking the vague agreements it had of community self-moderation within reason, essentially they broke the Community trust in a large way because they no longer gave the community the autonomy to moderate when minecraft appeals to a very wide audience of people; much of them full adults whilst the aim of "protecting" the community was towards the (i'm pretty sure) minority population of children - where generally societally the responsibility is, should be, and has to be with the parents.

How can you talk about such things when Minecraft itself is a unique, unlike anything else game? Or do we have other huge three-dimensional sandboxes where you can break anything? Let's think about the development process a little further, okay? 1) In fact, we have TWO Minecraft - Java and Bedrock. Due to the different programming code, many things that worked on one version will be broken in the other (hello, Bundle). And therefore, an additional process is needed in their creation, in essence, the creation of another new item.; 2) Developers can't add whatever they want - Microsoft people are always standing over them, not to mention the rules they set for themselves. I mean, take a look at the April Fools' updates - there's just a lot of content, but it's not optimized, it often contradicts the style and concept of Minecraft and rarely reaches the final game. 3) The main Swedish office of Mojang consists, in fact, of 20 people. Those people who constantly write about the state of the game, updates, and so on - this, in fact, is the whole REAL team working on the game. All the other 600 people are engaged in the development of spin-offs, testing functions, or simply are typical "effective managers". In the end, let's just compare it to mod development, okay? Let's take "Alex Caves" as an example. This mod has been officially developed for a whole year, and it is still unclear how long Alex has been thinking through all these ideas. There was no control over him from above, and therefore he could add an Atomic Bomb, Dinosaurs, and a submarine. He didn't need to port his mod to Bedrock (and it would be difficult to implement many functions on it). After all, he used the tools that were given to him by the Mojang themselves (as he himself admitted), while the developers of the main game are forced to create these tools first, and only then use them.

@@mastertheory4583Yeah, I never understood the “small update” mindset this community has- I play the Sims 4, which adds less content than your average Minecraft update and charges you $40 for it. I play Subnautica, which while being an exceptional game, had its last “major” update over a year ago that added a single new building component. As far as I’m aware, Raft stopped adding content after it came out of Early Access, and Terraria claimed that their last major content update was in 2020 (they’ve done a couple things since then, but nothing huge). And I don’t think Skyrim has been touched by its devs in half a decade, at least. So I’m incredibly confused where all of this “tiny update” stuff is coming from. Maybe I don’t play the right games, but as far as open-world sandboxes, Minecraft is doing incredibly well for a game of its age.

I would have to agree with you until you got to the section about how people were overestimating the danger of the reporting system. The community was fine handling itself and if you wanted to restrict the options listed there you could for your own server, there was nothing forcing you to not swear unless the server put in a restriction but now if somebody reports you even if the server allows the action you can still get banned. This was probably one of the worst changes they have made in relation to multiplayer.

I presume it was mostly a thing to reduce their liability. Sure private servers are kind of their own thing and are private but you’re still playing Mojang’s game, Minecraft, and unfortunately in the real world, they can be held liable for it. (I believe also in some areas of the world laws are being passed to require online moderation) I actually think Mojang’s system is quite tame and I’m surprised they didn’t go even farther with it. You can bypass the whole system using mods! But it does kind of raise the point of why the system even exists at all… (I guess if you’re playing with a mod Mojang can argue you were playing a self modified version of the game that is not claimed to be supported at all by them) Also while they did add player skin and name reporting recently as well, they have also reduced the number and scope of the categories that a report can be made for.

Although note the player reporting is *player* reporting, which affects players globally, not in any one server. You can be reported for your actions in one server, but ultimately it’s a tool to moderate the game globally across all servers (reporting kind of exists as well because bad actors will jump from server to server, that’s why they get banned from multiplayer as a whole)

So far here are all of my issues with Minecraft: -They refused to add sharks because they didn't want people to go out and attempt to kill sharks, very stupid reason in my opinion, no sane person would do that. And if *anyone* actually went out and did that, I can assure you that it wasn't Minecraft that inspired them, it was a severe mental illness. -They refused to make dolphins rideable because they didn't want people to go try that in real life, once again, only a mental illness would inspire such behavior. -They removed fireflies because they're "poisonous to frogs" but then turned around and made them able to eat creatures made of molten rock and be fine. Also, in real life, frogs simply don't care if what they eat is poisonous or not, they will eat wasps and fire ants and not care. Only if something is immediately hurting a frog and the frog doesn't have a high enough pain tolerance will it spit it out. -Although taking time to update things is important, and although they are entitled to take their time if they feel like they need to. The amount of time vs. the amount of content and the quality of it being produced, along with the organization of it is ABYSMAL. They have way too much time to do these things and they still manage to mess it up. -Another reason they take so long with updates in comparison to mod developers is because they want what they add to "feel vanilla". Yet they turn around and add the sniffer, quite possibly the one thing that stands out the most in Minecraft. -The mob vote. I actually don't have the same issues with it as everyone else, my problem is much different. The mobs they present us with don't have any actual desirable functionalities, and not only that but they just don't look right. They don't feel like they belong in the game at all. The Glow Squid, the Sniffer, the Rascal, the Tuff Golem, the Penguin, the Crab, etc. I feel like they should add more fantasy-based mobs that actually fit into the game and the lore of the game, and most importantly LOOK like they fit into the game. I also feel like they shouldn't allow votes from big influencers to count in the mob votes, that they should do more thorough checks on who's voting and why they're voting, maybe ask them trick-questions that take effort to bypass. -Finally, the over-political injections into the game, like in the splash-text. I know there are resource packs that remove political splash-text (at least I hope there are). But I feel like it should be optional if you want to see splash-text that says "support this community!", it's not even asking you to, it's *TELLING* you to.

I think it’s fine if they refuse to add things, Minecraft is such a broad game anything can be added at any time. And there’s no feature that really *needs* to be added, other than things that do improve your gameplay experience, such as accessibility options, UI improvements, performance improvements, and improvements to existing gameplay. Brand new features though are well brand new features and the game will be fine even if they’re not added. The bigger issue is when they show stuff to the community and they know the community expects it to be in the next update then they change their minds and tell the community a reason they know doesn’t really make sense but they think is good PR anyways. To the community, it shows Mojang really has little commitment to the things it shows, and that can really affect people’s excitement for the game.

the best way I can describe the minecraft community is spoiled, ungrateful, toxic, rude, angry, and whiny as hell. they're like a 5 year old spoiled kid who cries gallons of tears because it isnt what they wanted, and I mean that as an insult to them. not to mention a incident of some fans attacking a dev as well. but in general the community needs anger management classes because its ridiculous. like criticism and disliking certain things that mojang does is justifiable, but if it includes death threats, hoping they lose their jobs, or say something even worse is not a justifiable complaint. in the end I will say that the minecraft community is eating itself alive
@valzicplayz3845

The thing i dislike about Mojang and whats fuelling the negativity in the community to me is: They keep adding or don't add stuff because what happens in the real world. But then have features or changes that make no sense. For example, *The Aquatic update.* Sharks weren't added because sharks are miss understood and they don't want people in IRL hunt them down. Yet you can tame a wild animal AKA a wolf, an animal that is hostile to people IRL... a feature where we can ride dolphins, something humans do IRL. Was rejected because animal cruelty... yet theres an achievement in the game where you ride a pig off a mountain or how farms in minecraft look exactly like IRL farms that are cruel to animals. If you're not gonna add a Shark because animal cruelty, add a mythical shark like a zombie shark or some other hostile aquatic creature that roam the oceans at random. I do think the community has gotten more toxic because of Mojang. People are getting more upset because Mojang give dumb excuses, aren't adding new and fun gimmicks to mobs compare to the first mob vote, for example. Look at the Sniffer, I have yet to see that mob in survival. So you'll have a wave of people who wanted the other mobs are now stuck with a mob they'd never seen unless in creative. Then come to the combat, bosses, performance/optimization, and how theres a lack of interesting servers. Just making a sour taste in people mouths. Heck, how Mojang doesnt give Java Bedrock features that the mod *Essentials* did. Why do i have to pay to make a world so my friends can join?

While I understand your perspective, I think you miss an important aspect of the conversation: is the criticism and negativity deserved? As you described in the video, Mojang over-promised then failed to deliver on multiple updates. Chat reporting has legitimate concerns with how it could be abused. Then there’s the mob votes, and the EULA changes. It’s hard to blame people for being negative when it’s due to Mojang’s poor decision making, though certainly the negativity is not a good thing. A negative community, as you say, tends to perpetuate and become worse (believe me I know, since I’m a destiny fan). We can work to make it a more positive one, and focus on what is good about the game, but in my mind it’s ultimately on Mojang to turn community sentiment around

Porque no los dos? We need to be a less toxic community, yes, but also not take the corporate gaslighting from Mojang. They owe it to the player base to make right their broken promises, or at least not continue repeating their mistakes. They have not done as badly as the birch forest again, but they still continue the mob votes without change. Since the phantom, there have been loud criticisms of the mob votes: their opacity to the mobs' features, their controversy, their perceived loss of losing mobs, etc. It wouldn't be hard to try some small changes to the formula to make them turn out better, but the most recent vote was a highlight of all that people hated about the past mob votes. If Mojang felt like a devteam we could trust, like they did a few years ago, this would all be much easier to take, but they've continued eroding the community's trust. Every public response we get feels like condescension. They see us as children, and in fairness some of us are, but it does a number on the ability to trust them when it's clear they think our feedback is nothing more than background noise to occasionally take notice of.

But the optimization sucks, the chat reporting was very poorly implemented, and their communication has been poor for a long time now. The mob vote thing was also really annoying, as there are games that have done creature votes WAY better (it may be one of the only things Ark: Survival Evolved’s team has done better). They could use those other votes as better examples of how to do it if need be. The chat reporting also had an exploit that let people fake messages, and there are still ways you can fudge it. So it’s not just that they overpromise, their coding itself is objectively subpar for these important pieces of code.

@@sosig6445 While you make good points, I have to say, calling someone a gaslighting, spineless bootlicker coward over a debate in the comment section of a Minecraft video is fucking hilarious.

@@pl-AthEE_Three Well its also hilarious that he gets intimidated by minecraft players into changing his opinion....

the worst part of the chat reporting is that you could get banned by doing stuff ALONE in a singleplayer world. You do not have the freedom to do whatever you want in a singleplayer world, where there's no one else.

That's not true. If you don't get reported, then you don't get banned. And singleplayer is always possible

@@guitaekm the chat report kicked me out of a private server (population of 2) because i said "tree" in a sentence, not kidding. the "no chat report" mod is ESSENTIAL, you just can't trust filters that bad with the power to kick people. also completely pointless for it to be on in single player, it feels data-harvest-y, and it's everyone's moral obligation to get rid of telemetry where they can

It's clearly true, given how many people have been experiencing it, but I guess it's easy to win a point in an argument when you completely misrepresent the reality of the situation.@@guitaekm

@@spacebassist "it's everyone's moral obligation to get rid of telemetry where they can" why? i do agree with your other beliefs, and i do believe that where there's telemetry, the user should be told of it and there should be an option to turn it off. but, i don't quite understand how it's a moral obligation to turn it off just because it's there.

@@chromosozeit's a bit of a meme, like "it's always right to pirate shows that aren't on any streaming service/download abandonware" I also think it should be a more widespread sentiment to stop giving so much of our data, but [current year]. So yeah
