I have used sanding, priming, painting and varnishing for an old and valuable stand. I cleaned the drawer handles. I've made a video of it because it can give you an idea of wood painting or refurbishing old tables / coffee tables in your home. I hope it helps to you.
In this work, I first sanded and primed the old table and then painted it. I did the varnishing. You can paint without sanding, but I do not recommend it.
