On a recent trip to the Sutherland Observatory we photographed something unexplained which we would like the experts to solve the mystery as to what we saw!
Site location: -32.3756, 20.8107
Date & Time 1: 21 October 2022 between 22:30 & 23:10 SAST
Date & Time 2: 24 October 2022 between 22:00 & 23:00 SAST
Direction: SW to SSW

Sattelites flaring up; they maintain orientation/path to earth, yet the optimal lighting follows the sunset/rise.

Indeed. See link to an excellent video in the comments below, explaining it well. We since worked out the exact visibility "season" which happens to be happening at the moment. They get bright enough to be naked eye - I actually watched them last night.

Thanks for the subscription. Yes, the Magellanic clouds are great! It was even greater when Supernova 1987A popped in the LMC!

Thanks, it looks like the experts reached consensus that it was satellites.

@@SterremanWillie wanneer was die onlangse launch van falcon heavy. Hy was gekontrakteer met 'n expendable main body, fairings en extra fuel. Hy kon dalk 10h hoog gehaal het 🤷

@@dirkroos8607 dit was glad nie vir ons sigbaar nie, en verder het ons die verskynsel drie aande uitmekaar gesien. Daar is intussen bepaal dit moet Starlinks wees en dat sulke flitse laag op die horison in die SW baie meer algemeen is as wat ons besef het.
