I really appreciate when people who can drink take a break from it and experience the odd “I don’t fit” discomfort, because it’s really hard to understand how much alcohol is a part of our culture until you stop drinking it. I don’t know that I phrased that exactly right, but I think it’s coherent.
@Fazerella
@Fazerella 4 года назад
You're absolutely right. I don't drink and it makes social gatherings difficult sometimes. Like if you've for a Christmas party to go to, do you go? Everyone will be drinking, it's weird if you don't drink. Do you want to be the only sober one? It'll be obvious if you don't drink and people will ask... Ugh such a minefield.
@josannewarner6476
@josannewarner6476 4 года назад
Fazerella of course you should still attend functions. There are so many persons who do not drink either for religious reasons, health conditions or by choice. Why must you stop enjoying activities because you don’t want to have alcohol? There are fun and tasty non-alcoholic beverages that you can consume. Honestly, not drinking alcohol has been the easiest break I have taken...going on 7 months now. Didn’t drink for my birthday, Christmas or Carnival. My family, friends and colleagues have just accepted my choice. The real struggle socialising is when you abstain from sugar, flour, dairy and meat. Alcohol is a “walk in the park”. But try doing all those, you definitely have to stay at home or walk with your own meals 🙈😂
@DarkAngelEU

Chyna mentioned that she was looking forward to just one glass and it reminded me of my journey - no judgment, just wanted to share my story. :) I "accidentally" became sober by stopping drinking for about a month or so and then having that one glass. I repeated that process a few times until basically, I didn't even want that one glass. The social aspect was hard to overcome but now I actually feel a sense of pride in telling people I don't drink because drinking was a peer pressure thing for me. I fooled myself into believing I liked it and I liked clubs, after a sheltered upbringing where drinking was completely off the cards. To me, drinking was a sign of liberation from my restrictive past. Now, ironically, not-drinking is a sign of liberation and free will to me. I have truly become more of my person.

I’ve gone through the pink cloud syndrome which was a strange feeling all together. I have sooo much more energy, control and perform better at the gym. My relationship with my immediate family has improved drastically as well. I lost my wife due to my alcoholism and regret so many of my decisions but the one I don’t is putting down the drink and coke. Stay strong guys, it’s totally worth it!

Um, well that's a pretentious and kind of offensive way of putting it don't you think? To people that have actually experienced addiction and/or substance abuse... yeah, it's kind of a dramatic thing for them. No, what's truly amazing is that we live in a society where people choose to put an extremely dangerous drug like alcohol into their body, leading to the death of 60k Americans per year according to the CDC (cirrhosis, drunk driving etc COMBINED). But 80k die each year from diabetes alone. So yeah, kick sugar for a month and see if you don't end up feeling a little proud of yourself, and maybe even telling a few folks about it. It's not about being dramatic. Jesus 🙄

18 Months ago I decided to quit drinking for 30 days. At the time I was drinking too much and too often. A beer before lunch, maybe another with lunch or a glass of wine. Then same thing in the evening. I also travel a lot for work and dinner with colleagues is always a drink before dinner, wine with the meal and then a night cap after. It started to affect my sleep. I would wake up at 4am and not be able to go back to sleep but I was too tired to do anything productive. Plus I was getting chunky. About 5 days into the detox I was sleeping so well throughout the night. Waking feeling refreshed and clear. I had energy all day. I just felt so good. The end of the 30 days detox was my birthday but when the day came I felt so good I didn't want to drink so I extended the detox. It's now been 18 months since I've had a drink and I have never felt better in my life. I've lost more than 30 punds, at least 12 of which were lost just by not drinking alcohol. It's been one of the best things I've ever done. I don't miss it at all. I've actually become quite anti-booze. The way it's so socially acceptable and everywhere. The way you have to explain that you don't drink. The way that I felt so good without it made me think how bad I actually felt when I was drinking and didn't even notice. I no longer drink and my life is a thousand times better for it.

I haven't had alcohol for almost six years, and when I made the decision to live an alcohol free life, I was in the Navy. Additionally, I grew up in an area that is famous for wine making and came from a family with a history of alcoholism. Early on, I did miss it, but as time went on, the cravings for it go away. These days, I do not miss it and I never have thoughts of drinking. I never feel socially awkward because I don't have a beer in hand or anything like that. The way I am, I am a very socially awkward person even without alcohol. Thank goodness for teas, juices, water, and the occasional soda. For anyone out there that is looking to reduce or completely quit, you really are doing yourself a huge favor for your health and your finances, and I hope my experience encourages you to do what is good for you.

Drinking really is deep in american culture. When I tell people I don't drink alcohol it is usually followed up by "oh, so you were alcoholic and had to quit, right?" Ever since I turned 21 people look at me like I am trying to be a nun when I tell then I don't drink. I just don't drink, I can't afford it, my bloodline is more likely to being alcoholics, and I actually listened to the whole "don't do drugs or drink alcohol or else your body will get really messed up" in school. I never really seen a reason to drink. Heck, my parents use to tease me that we should all go to the bar for my 21st birthday to get me my first drink but after a while they started to see it turn out badly for their friends and kids I went to school with and support my decision now. For a majority of people though, I just seem like a holier-then-thou party-pooper any time I don't accept a beer.

About ten year ago and for three years in a row, I used to drink my way through at least 1, sometimes 2, bottles of wine each Friday night. I liked the tipsy feeling and the numb sensation that came with that. It began to occur to me over time that alcohol is a social lubricant, but it's also literally poison for our bodies and being tipsy or drunk doesn't make your life problems change or go away. Five years ago, I limited my drinking to having a social drink (a beer or 1-2 glasses of wine) with family or friends every couple of weeks, and love being stone cold sober at home on a Friday night watching a good movie. Life is too short to booze it away.

Brain fog and tiredness are pretty common symptoms of minor/moderate alcohol withdrawal. Unfortunately, the tiredness may take a few months to go away. My dad's family is strongly prone to addictive behaviors - including alcoholism. That means that I've periodically been witness to acohol withdrawal from mild to extreme as various people at various points stopped drinking. It's one of those things that you don't realize how much you're doing it until you stop doing it. Like eating Girl Scout cookies. Additional note: the sugary cravings are because the yeast/candida in your digestive tract want to replace the sugar that you were feeding them with alcohol. It'll get better as you have some yeast die off and it rebalances.

Now, at the end of March, I'm drinking again at social outings and also sometimes at home. I used to drink about 3 evenings a week about 2 to 3 craft beers. More at social outings. And I'm now slipping back to my old habits. I find it difficult to make up my mind about it. There is something so much fun about going on drunk adventures having deep talks about nothing. I did make up my mind about drinking beer and watching a movie at home. That situation is just not special enough for alcohol. But hangovers suck really bad. OK. These were just my thoughts. I used to drink often and a lot when I was younger. And when I say a lot I mean I wouldn't stop once I'd started. Mostly whiskey and bourbon. I'm 44 now and I drink once every 6 months or less on the rare occasion. I feel much healthier but I'm also much less fun to be around.

When I was in my first year at uni my friend (who is completely tee-total) bet me £50 I couldn’t go one month without drinking... but I still had to go out (and I went out a LOT in my first year of uni). I managed it though, the lure of that £50 was more than the lure of the booze for me (plus I SAVED. A bunch of money I would have spent normally)

I use to drink HEAVILY. Once when I quit I had super low motivation, and I would get really tired in the middle of the day. Drinking fks with your dopamine levels, which keep you alert. It's nice to think when you quit something bad you're just automatically going to turn into a genius CrossFit athlete, but just think of it as you have to pay alittle for the bad effects alcohol has on your brain. Through pushing myself to not drink, I stopped for quarantine and am very happy to be fairly productive and not have any side effects... also saves money, less going out. Also easier to lose weight!

Well let me tell you my life story. I slowly distanced off from alcohol. It's been about three years and it's opened my eyes about how social gatherings rely on alcohol and drinking. The downside is that it's made me more critical of the culture as well as the people who constantly talk about drinking. I think the current dynamic sees alcoholicism not as seriously as it should be. And honestly this is really only obvious once the person take a break themselves. Thanks for making me feel like you've been there with my journey.

It's very odd because that's my normal standard, and it feels weird when people drink and they feel like cultural experiences are dependent on them drinking. These are just my thoughts.

Allen Carr's book seems to be the hidden secret for lifelong non-drinking. Interesting thing about it is it makes you not even want to cheat or have a substitute for booze since your entire mental association with it has changed. It's like if you were addicted to pizza but now you associate pizza with something like rotten sushi. Not sure if it's just word voodoo or what but it seems to work.

My rule is just that I don't pay for alcohol. It's served me pretty well - I can still have a glass or two at weddings or new years parties, and friends who know this is the rule are suddenly less willing to badger me about it because they know they won't convince me unless they're also willing to buy a drink for me. It's a pretty solid deterrent for most of them most of the time. It definitely stops it from becoming A Drinking Habit, too.

I quit drinking for 4 months last year (I had a goal I needed to achieve). After the 3 months I found I didnt seek out alcohol in the same way. I didnt buy it at home anymore and it was less automatic for me to order it when I was out. When did drink, I wanted less of it. The default "yes I will have another" was minimised. I also found that I tolerate alcohol less well now Less hits me more and more often than not I dont feel good afterwards. I still drink on high days and holidays but I drink substantially less than I did not because I am exercising any great will power, but just because I do not want it as much. I will never regret that 4 months I went without as it has led to a far healthier relationship with alcohol

I pick two months of the year where i don't drink at all to give my body a rest. I always find the first two weeks is the physical and emotion purge. The stuff you drink to avoid emotionally and in your thoughts tend to surface and I usually get an increase in aches and pains actually. Here's my problem with drinking. I'm at work 9-10 hours a day. Sometimes I work on Saturday as well. I have an almost one hour commute to/from work (almost 2 hours round trip), and I like to get to work about a half an hour early. So, during the week (and occasionally on Saturday), I only have about 3-4 hours of free time, and a decent chunk of that is used showering/eating. So, when the weekend comes, I pretty much don't want to do anything, and drinking (at home) is the most convenient fun/relaxing thing I care to bother with.

I'm 56 a non drinker, but did when I was young. My parents let me have 3 glasses of wine when I was 13 on their anniversary. My initial reaction was wow, this amazing as I caught a nice buzz. But my parents went away on a stress free weekend just after I turned 14. Being a dumb kid, I had tickets to the dance at school (which I usually bought at the door). So I raided dad's liquor cabinet with the thought that if 3 glasses made me feel that good then a whole bottle of newfy screech would make me feel better. It was 40% alcohol. I chugged it down in a couple of minutes, then chased down a can of Campbells Cream of mushroom soup. I had to ride my bike 4 miles to my friends house. I stopped at a convenience store and bought some rum topped cigars cos I thought I was really kewl. I had to ride over a railway bridge which went, u turned went up some more, then turned again and up and over the top. Then l did the reverse and made it over the tracks. I was getting plastered but continued on. I finally got to my friend's house and his mother answered the door. I asked if Stephen was in. I smelled like a summery. She responded just a sec, and went to get Stephen. At this point, was drunk and had one last rational thought that if I went to the dance, I would be caught and expelled. So before Stephen came to the door I climbed on my bike to go back home. Grandma was going to be looking after me. I got to the railway bridge and started going up. Somehow my chain fell off my bike, and I reached over my seat with the seat in my belly and tried to get the chain back on. I was struggling with limited co-ordination and flipped over my bike....covered in grease from the chain. I blacked out, don't remember anything after that, but made it home. Friends said they saw me riding thru red lights and cars were stopping for me. When I got home I went upstairs to my room with no recollection. I had all my clothes on with the bicycle grease all over me, shoes still on in my bed. Grandma came over, and my room smelled like rum. Grandpa drank rum, so did my dad. Grandpa played guitar and sang at a bar. Dad was an accountant worked in Toronto and some nights would join Grandpa after a train ride home and get drunk. Grandpa was in the Navy, and dad was a binge alcoholic. Mom drank a lot too. Grandma called my parents and told them to come home, ending their stress free weekend. When I awoke, you can't even imagine how sick I was. For 3 days everything I ate or drank came right back up for 3 days. I nearly killed myself with alcohol poisoning. I believe God saved me. After that the smell of rum would set my gag reflexes off. I was born with kid eye issues one shriveled, one shrunken. The shrunken one grew back. After that I never was a big drinker as my hangover's were brutal...not worth the few hours of pleasure. I only drank when I was underage...u know the thrill of doing something illegal. Once I was legal I quit for good, as the thrill was gone. Now I'm a a Christian and u can get drunk in the Holy Spirit...same good feelings, but no hangover.
