Video #578: My new favorite studio bench top surface for working with polymer clay... borrowing from the Scrapbookers.... More Info: www.beadsandbea... Polymer Clay Tutor.
Topics Covered In This Video:
Review of the We-R Memory Keepers - Precision Glass Cutting Mat.
In the past I have been using the Ranger Non-Stick Craft Sheet as my work surface for polymer clay.
When I saw this new Glass Cutting Mat at Michaels, I just had to buy one for my polymer clay studio.
Glassy smooth. No texture on your clay.
Non-porous surface. Great for inks, paints, liquid clays, etc.
Tempered glass. You can use your heat gun to melt embossing powders, cure liquid clays, set paints, etc.
Wipes clean easily with baby wipes or paper towel.
Great cutting surface for Exacto Knives, Clay Blades, and Cookie Cutters.
Printed (on back of glass) grid and ruled edges for measuring and cutting straight lines and angles.
Angled lines would be great for shaping Kaleidoscope cane sections.
Glass will hold onto clay, doesn't slide around and is helpful for 'pulling' clay out of silicone molds.
Large size originally designed for Scrapbooking 13" by 13" (33cm by 33cm).

Yet another great purchase I've made due to your video reviews -- this glass mat and the 1-step looper in the same day! Thanks a bunch and keep the video reviews coming!

I live in Portugal and these things tend to only be available online, on international stores, so the shipping costs alone are enough to make me want to think 5 times before buying one of these. Until then, I have the poor-person's equivalent. I bought a cheap cutting base at my local art supplies store, which has the grid with ruler and the angles printed on it, and I used double-sided tape to adhere a glass panel from an old picture frame to it. It works just fine, I only have to be careful with the edges (not that they're very sharp, but the corners can hurt me if I'm too reckless). Also, whenever I want to apply a lot of pressure to a clay piece (like when I'm rolling a particularly thin sheet of clay that my pasta machine just rips into pieces) without worrying about it getting too stuck to the glass, I like to use a smooth silicone baking mat that I got very cheap at a "dollar-store" portuguese equivalent. The only bad thing I have to say about the silicone base is that it basically acts as a cat hair magnet...

+lilithmarleen Thanks for sharing your thrifty alternatives! I totally think that people should figure out different ways to make things work for their situations. Your ideas are the perfect example of that! :)

Just bought myself a We-R glass mat - I LOVE IT!!!! I have used it for everything polymer and I have only had it for a few days. Not only is it a great work surface for the clay. BUT WAIT, It is also PERFECT when mixing custom colors; for measuring increments of clay based on your own recipe for mixing and/or for ready-made "mixing" recipes....even if a recipe calls for 16 parts white, 14 parts beige, and 1 part yellow; or whatever! Thanks for all the great hints and tutorials. KAT

Karlee Etter Yes I have been starting to cut proportions with the mat too! I'll have to do a video on that... it makes large batches really easy!
@karleeetter2759
@karleeetter2759 9 лет назад
A video about cutting proprtions would be GREAT - especially when the mixing recipe calls for...say....16 parts of one color, 14 parts of a second color, and 1 part (1/16th?) of a third. Thanks again. KAT

BTW - the website titled "Mixing Map for Premo" is fantastic - very helpful for mixing. The mixing map can be found at maggiemaggio.com. Do you know that site; if not, you may want to check it out. KAT

I've been using a glass matt for quite some time now and I don't want to miss it. The clay sticks nicely to it as you showed, but it is also very easy to peal it off again. For me it's the perfect work surface!

Get a piece of a tough glass from a Glazier, custom cut. Then print out a grid paper in either imperial or metric and put it under the glass for sizing and measuring when using your polymer. Much cheaper and no international freight. I just scored a large white tile from a Tile supplier, for nothing. See what you can come up with locally, first. Before spending a lot of money, especially on freight. I am going to print out a grid, appropriate to my needs and laminate it or get it laminated. Mind I am restricted to A4 but that is all we need with polymer.

Thanks, Cindy. Great tip. I've been buying and using acrylic sheets from Home Depot. I get the 24 x 18 sized ones. But they eventually get scratched from cutting and those scratches create indentions in my clay while rolling or reducing so this is a very helpful tip! I've learned so much from you since taking up clay 8 months ago. Thanks for all your tutes and I'm a subscriber to your membership plan, I love it!

I love working on glass so much that I have two. The newer one is 12 x 9 with grids at 1/4 inch... and the other was suppose to be a cooking cutting board and it's 19 x 16. The only thing that I don't like about the larger one is that it has a texture on the back making it very hard to see though, hence the smaller gridded mat. Thanks for the video and also wanted to say that your Fairy Door Tutorial for November 2014 is Awesome! So well thought out and explained, as usual:)

Thanks for saying that tantesherry ! I used to have a glass mat that had a bit of texture on the top side as well... subtle but there. Doug took it to use for photographing on. I am really happy with my new one.

Just go to Ikea and get one of their cheap tempered glass table or shelf tops... $10 - much larger and tons cheaper than michaels. Want some grids - just print them out and tape them to the backside of the glass... heck - our Ikea even has an open box area with tons of crap that's pennies on the dollar!
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 лет назад
Hi pesto12601 Thanks for the tip! With my coupon I paid about $16 for mine and I didn't have to print and tape on a grid. So it works out to be pretty close as far as value goes, looks nice and is a great size. I think it was a great deal actually!
@pesto12601
@pesto12601 10 лет назад
PolymerClayTutor welcome.. the big difference though is the size... the Ikea one for $10 is 24 inches wide by about 15 inches deep.... that basically covers your entire desk!!

pesto12601 I just checked both the Canadian and American Websites for Ikea and it looks like they don't carry glass cutting boards anymore. That's too bad... they sound like they might work well for some people.

PolymerClayTutor Sorry - it wasn't a cutting board - it was a table top... here: www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60221471/ - was on sale for $15 last week when I was in there... tempered glass... 20 x 39! In the "end bins" section of the store - they have tons of these type of tops for around $10 - some may have scratches on an edge or two.. but doesn't get in the way of a cheap alternative. Enjoy!

I have always used something like this. It's great!! It stays cold and I love the measurements. Only thing to watch out for is that some I them have a coating as the lines and numbers etc. They seem to start coming off after a while. I'm not sure if it's the clay reacting or just wear. Just a little for your information
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 лет назад
Thanks michele Dickey the grid is printed on the back of this one and with the rubber feet keeping it up off the surface I don't think it will get the chance to rub off. Maybe the grid on yours is painted on the top, if it is coming off like that?

@pinksquidink7256
@pinksquidink7256 10 лет назад
How much do these sell for? I realize prices may vary slightly from store to store, but just as an idea. I currently work on a scrap piece of marble counter top slab but like that this is non-porous and has measurements on it.
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 лет назад
Hi theneedhams I believe it was in the $28 range, and then I used a 40% off coupon to make it about $16 or so. Actually it is around the same price as the Ranger Non-stick craft mats or the Sculpey Make and Bake mat.

Hi! Thanks for all your geat tuts!!! May I ask if this mat can go into the oven? I'm used to model on a small glass surface and put it directly in the oven with the creation, so if this mat can handle the 130° without suffering would be very great! (i don't know the temperature of the heat gun...) thanks!

Hi Cindy! Great find. I've been using glass for years and put a self healing cutting board underneath, but this is even better. The measurements are so much better, much more accurate, and I love how the edges are beveled! The thickness alone is worth going out and getting it. Up to now I had always used glass from old picture frames and always had to worry about putting too much pressure on the glass and cracking it. By the by, I have a treat for you. About 2 years ago my son posed a story for school that I thought you would just love, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OfsUu10rcBI.html. This story just goes to show that clay is for everyone, young or old!!

Hi Tamara Crum I went and saw the video of your son's story and loved it! How awesome is he! Tell him that his perfect clay dog was so perfect that another little child fell in love it when they discovered it on the playground and has been happily playing with it ever since. Now there are two happy children... one with a perfect clay dog and the other with a perfect dog named clay. :)

Hi Велемира Арбалиева A long clay blade helps to slide under the clay when it sticks. Does that not work for you?
@TeresaPandoraSalgado
@TeresaPandoraSalgado 10 лет назад
I have a Sculpey Make and Bake mat over a big sheet of tempered glass. The Make and Bake is super slick so nothing sticks and I use the glass area for any cutting with a craft knife..
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 лет назад
Teresa Pandora Salgado That's a clever idea. The Sculpey mats are good, but I don't like the texture they leave on the clay. I find that any clay that gets stuck to the glass mat comes up easily if you slide your clay blade under it along the glass.
