Hi everyone let me show you what happens when an outdoor wood boiler runs out of wood! Per CODE (At least for NH) you need a backup heat source when you have one of these machines and ours is our oil furnace! Let me show you what happens and how it works when we run out of wood!

Yep. Thanks to you I’m stocking up on pallets and scrap wood for when I do a ash cleanout. Gets a little stressful trying to get fire going again. Was foolish and took out all my coals last cleanout. Lesson learned! Keep the videos coming Jay

Glad to help! Yes at first I took it all out and realized that wasnt the best move haha I try to pus the left over coals back or to the left or right and grab pure ash! Thanks for tuning in!

Nice back up, I keep small pieces of wood and cardboard for that situation and I rake all the ashes right up to the door and then I put the bigger wood on top. Merry Christmas.

Yes for sure! Cardboard and kindling stash is good to have with these machines! Hope you had a good Christmas!

I have been thinking of an outdoor boiler for a while, after Hurricane Sandy, I refuse to install another boiler in the crawl space where it floods, so I resorted to 2 pellet stoves, then after 10 years a wood burner and a pellet stove! So if the fires go out, we can freeze here in NJ. Next step replace house, and then have 2 heating systems, one natural gas/ Yukon duel fuel, and an outdoor boiler as well!
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 3 года назад
Hey Pat! You said that so casually lol like "replace house" just like that hahaha having a backup is key for sure cause stuff happens! Thanks for tuning in!

@@HomesteadJay let’s see... house built 182?, house moved 2 times before 1880, and a bunch of butches kept fixing it ever since... you know the add another layer technique! The bathroom floor was 14 inches thick, and now doesn’t match the doorway any more or the slopes of the rest of the floors!

My outdoor wood burner sometimes goes out unexpectedly at night. Its like the hot coals are hiding under a chunk of wood. So, if I need to get the fire going quick, I stack newspaper, cardboard and kindling like you did. Then I hit it with my all purpose weed burning torch until it's gets to forest fire level. I'm kind of impatient.

minimum return water temp should be 150 -160 to prevent condensation and creosote build up. i have a CB 760hdx and the min is set at 170 max is set at 185. Aqua stat is set at 160
@HomesteadJay

Hmm I will have to investigate! I didn’t set the 130 that was like that was when got here so I’ll look into adjusting!

Jay I always wondered how a wood boiler works pretty neat to have that backup. Down here in Alabama if we run out of wood we get cold. Take care brother

Assuming the outdoor boiler is decently insulated, 300gal of heated water would take a LONG time to cool to the point of freezing.....I'd guess days if not longer. I have two 1500 gal tanks of water inside an unheated cinder block building that stores my water supply from the spring, and it hasn't frozen in sub zero temperatures.
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 3 года назад
Hey Ed! You are correct the main body would take a while to freeze but the pipes inlet and outlet id imagine would freeze first! Thanks for sharing!

Can't use just a wood stove as a heat source here in CT either but you can use just a pellet stove as the only heat source.. but we still run out of pellets regularly

I think they have blowers and tumblers for the pellets. . They rely on power to run

Awesome information. I was curious what precautions were made in the event the wood boiler temperature dropped too low. Guess with how much water has to be cycled your only option is oil or LP as a backup.

I've heard about backup heat supply but I don't know if its not on the books here or not enforced. Our local building inspectors are really awesome they give owner builders like me a lot of leniency. Not for important stuff like siting or smoke alarms but they could care less if you have a backup heat source lol

How often do you have to refill you water in the water jacket
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 3 года назад
This is highly debated in the OWB industry! In my opinion if your water is within PH levels and the anti corrosion inhibitor levels are good then I dont see the need! Check your owners manual though could be different!

Why is set at 130*? Is that what they recommend? I’m going to be putting a boiler in this summer, that’s why I’m asking.
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 3 года назад
I am not sure of a “bottom” number but the colder the water gets in the machine more chance of freezing, if it’s not a antifreeze glycol mix and also more condensation build up. I have heard before of others having a bottom number of 130 as well so I’m figuring that’s the magic number!

My 5036 want 185. I ran it power last year because it was our first year here and first year with a boiler and I had no idea the wood consumption and had limited supply. We got through but it made a lot of creosote. Got some videos of flamethrowers out the stack. I'm way ahead this year on wood so I'm running at 180 right now, still warm out (highs of 30s)
