"We're a family of fanatics" -Neeme Järvi
This compelling conversation with legendary conductor Neeme Järvi is a no-nonsense assessment of what it takes to build an orchestra and a community and why being an Estonian musician is a patriotic endeavour. His recollections include studies with Mravinsky and Rabinovich, glimpses of old Detroit, and a look at his extensive, multi-generational family of musicians. For 85-year-old Neeme Järvi it is all part of the "job of having fun".

Back in the late 80s or early 90s I interviewed him for the Schwann's magazine, when he was guest conducting the Minnesota Orchestra. A delightful man, and a delightful interview. I have a number of his Chandos CDs from that period and treasure them.

The Järvi family must have been a wonderful nest of joy & liberation to grow up in! It has produced the forward-looking Kristjan, who is freeing music from some of its bonds, taking it to the future❣️❣️ change the world.

I never heard Neeme, I only know that he for a long time was the conductor of Gothenburg Symphonie Orchestra, GSO, Sweden. And a quite famous one too, who, as I understand it, lifted this orchestra to new levels. From a swedish point of view, he then was quite a legend. Thank you for this series of interviews.

Wonderful! His way to conduct in the opening reminded me of last concert by Bernstein…. It is not an interview but the best of a conversation. This man is the quintessence of cosmopolitanism, Soviet roots and worldwide blossoming with an American zest… thank you again

We are SO glad you perceive it that way--interviews can be so one-sided and we really hope to make it feel like a conversation in the best way. We are so grateful to you--and yes Bernstein, good call. How I wish we could have filmed him--warmest wishes, zsolt

@@Living-the-Classical-Life I particularly appreciated when you let your question about anxiety on stage die as he did not understand the question properly. I do not think that a Soviet educated musician can grasp such a feeling or even recognize it. I am not writing that in a pejorative way at all as Jarvi humanity comes out so beautifully in your piece.

I agree with him that the US government doesn't support the classical music (or the arts, in general) anywhere close to how it is supported in Europe. It's a damn shame. On top of that, the ticket prices are quite high, so, a middle-class person can't go as often as he/she/they'd like.
@Living-the-Classical-Life
@Living-the-Classical-Life Год назад
Agreed-this ticket price issue needs to be taken way more seriously by concert presenters. Audiences are already challenging enough to find 😅

Thank you, Zsolt, for a very insightful conversation, the one which forcefully embraced humanity as a critical factor in music-making, of course in addition to « musicianship ». And, yes, your esteemed and charismatic interlocutor was conducting the interview, but the tune was nicely set. Thank you once again.

Thank you for this. Zsolt Bognár, you are an excellent interviewer. It was a pity that Neeme Järvi seemed to leave some questions unanswered, but then I found him quite difficult to understand. Perhaps he did answer, but I couldn’t follow!

A truly insightful and, indeed, enjoyable interview; I miss this kind of content on television nowadays. It's refreshing to hear Maestro Järvi explaining that aspiring conductors should master technique but should then feel free to vary their interpretation (within limits, of course!) for each performance, so audiences and musicians alike feel that the music remains fresh. It's also good to hear Maestro Järvi emphasising that he most enjoys live performances and that he derives most pleasure from the feeling that he and his colleagues have an emotional connection to the listeners - so unlike some conductors who seem to prefer relatively sterile studio work.
