'The work we done was hard At night we'd sleep cause we were tard (tired)' the lyrics are simple, but profound... and magical in incorporating Kentucky mountain dialect into the rhyme.... she is an absolute AMERICAN treasure and with Dolly Parton does Appalachia proud.
Country music goes right to the point and Loretta tells it like it is. I'm glad you guys are exploring country. Mel, you said it: "Daddy made it happen and mom held it down."
Amen & a lot of us still have that raise and hold it down. 32 year's and still holding it down for my man. Kids are grown, gone off and married, and grandbabies fill the void, and we only visit and leave them there, lol.
Shawn and Mel, you have just witnessed one of THE female generals of American country music. She is the FIRST female singer to receive the Country Music Association's "Entertainer of the Year" award, 1972. In 1973, Loretta was the FIRST country music singer (male or female) to ever be featured on the cover of Newsweek magazine. These years were the heights of the Women's Liberation movement, and no doubt her music made an impact on society at that time, that a woman from poverty could school other women of higher classes about their strength and value as humans. Having grown up dirt-poor, she is known for wearing splendid long gowns with extensive bead-work and sequining befitting a wealthy woman, with her hair ornately styled, and continues this signature look in interviews to this day. Miss Loretta suffered a stroke in 2017, and though she may not perform, leaves us a 60-year career of songwriting and performing to enjoy and from which to draw strength. God richly bless and keep her. Her younger sister is singer Crystal Gayle who also enjoyed success in the late '70's-early '80's with classic hits of her own. Thank you for enjoying this song of faith, knowing thyself, and the power of a family's love; a message the world needs in today's times. God Bless You!
When she hugged Charlie Pride when receiving the award, people lost their minds! She was confused and simply stated “he’s my friend.” She was such a kind soul and beautiful person❤
Loretta Lynn Has Just Passed Away Today At 90 Years Old And Its Really Sad..Weve Lost so many great Country artists Like Kenny Rogers And Now Loretta Lynn...R.I.P Queen Of Country..i miss you so much💔😭
I'm so happy you all went down this rabbit hole. Loretta Lynn is amazing. She would be so happy and proud her music is still resonating, She was an amazing women.
That kinda thing lasts through the generations. All four of my grandparents were from eastern Kentucky (but not the coalfields - they were farmers). I was raised on stories of how they grew up and how they lived. It has forged my values (and also resulted in useful skills like gardening, canning food, sewing and crocheting - I spent a LOT of time with my grandmothers). I feel so blessed to have that heritage. I remind myself of my grandmother teaching 30 - 35 students in eight grades by herself in a one room school (coal stove, no running water) when she was 19 whenever I think I can't do something. With parents and grandparents like mine, you have no excuses. 😁
She is as real as it gets. A poor hill billy girl who lived through the depression as though things weren't tough enough. She wrote her own songs out of experience. Songs like this, you ain't woman enough, fist city, don't come home drinking, ones on the way etc is like a musical biography of her life. She went from living in a cabin in the Kentucky hills to now living in a mansion outside of Nashville and yet she still says she spends most of her time hanging out in the replica of the cabin she grew up in because she said she feels more comfortable there. Nope, ain't getting more real than Loretta.
She mentioned that they didn't have shoes in the summer but got a new pair every winter... she has a song called 'Little Red Shoes' that touches on this...it's one of my favorites...but quite different than what you are hearing now (song was released in 2004)
This is literally my mothers story. She was the 15th child and they lived in a two room house in the holler. Dirt floor and had to hand their shoes off to the next youngest. Grandpa was a tobacco farmer. She left home at 15 got married and started having babies at 15. Rest in peace mommy. You were a star and overcame so much.
Loretta was born in 1932, and her story is almost the same as my parents (They grew up on hardscrabble tenant farms (sharecropping) in East Texas). There was no running water and electricity in their old houses (Loretta's mother and my grandmother had to use boiling pots of water, lye soap and scrub boards to clean their families' clothes and lighting was provided by old lamps using kerosene or coal oil). My dad would get in trouble if he was caught kicking cans because his father could only afford 1 pair of shoes a year for all of his kids, and there was a possibility of damaging the shoes by kicking them. Loretta had a replica built of the old house she lived in Butcher Holler, Kentucky after this song became a hit. Loretta's dad died of black lung disease in 1959, a result of his years of working in the coal mines. Loretta had a stroke in 2017 and is not touring.
I rwmwmbwe back in the 70s we wnet to visit my stepdads cousin in Kentucky. He owned several coal mines in the area and according to the family he was very well off... but the man and his family still lived in log cabins with running water or electricity. Granted it was way up on top of a mountain but I thought that was ridiculous
This is her life. You really need to watch Coal Miner's Daughter about her life. Sissy Spasek and Tommy Lee Jones did an outstanding job. It gives you alot of insight not only into her life, but the lives of many miners' families. Thank you for the reaction!
Shawn and Mel..Levon Helm from the Band...played her dad in the movie and my mom Phyllis Boyens played her mother and my grandfather Nimrod Workman sang Amazing Grace during the funeral scene...yes Loretta is as down to earth as you would think. Thank you Shawn and Mel for the trip down memory lane.
@@No1KCfan6 Yes I love her voice I have also requested her version of You Belong To Me but I guess there’s not enough suggestions for her songs to be played. I’m sure if the reactors listened to these great songs they would love them.
My dad (now 86) is a huge fan of Ms. Loretta Lynn. His favorites were the duet songs she did with Conway Twitty. I heard her music growing up, but I never really paid much attention back then as I was more into Dolly Parton in my youth. Then I saw the movie - Coal Miner's Daughter (with Sissy Spacek, who won a Best actress Oscar & Golden Globe for her performance). Her discography is vast & impressive, with so many great songs. Some of them are down right hilariously funny... A few favorites of mine are - You aint woman enough to take my man, You're the reason our kids are ugly (OMG!), and The Pill (she sings about being fed up with getting knocked up & having one baby after another - LOL! Just like Dolly, Ms. Loretta is one hell of a story teller! :-)
This song tells the story of America...God, family, love , hard work, no complaining just making due with what you have. The simple virtues that that generation had.
I am completely ready to admit I never had it as hard as Loretta did during the depression!! My parents made sure we were loved and my Dad was bringing home Air Force enlisted pay which was not much, Mom stayed home to make sure her children would bring her the honor she deserved, we did just that, honoring her through being good kids and making a good life for ourselves. We had the best teachers!! I miss them both!!!
You know Loretta and Patsy became great friends. They actually toured together for a while. Loretta got pregnant with twins she named them Patsy and Peggy which went on to become singers also.
Yes pleas continue on this Loretta rabbit hole. She is my all time favorite. Don't Come Home A Drinkin' is a must Loretta. Another favorite of mine is You're Looking At Country. There's many more. She has like 24 #1 songs I believe.
You two have brought so much joy into my life since ive found your channel. Thank you for everything!!! Cant wait to hear what you think about the movie...Its a CLASSIC!!!! Thanks again for everything!!!!
I gotta say, it's not like I didn't already love y'all and this channel, but your reaction gave me goosebumps. My oldest 3 siblings were born in a clapboard house on the side of a hill in Bowlingtown, Ky. I've been back in those hollers many times. The hardest working, sweetest people I ever knew was right there.
Loretta Lynn got married at 13 had six kids by the time she was 21 and still singing here and there for some shows she just turned 90 years old had two strokes and broke her hip and she still singing she got married to do little Lynn when she was 13 years old
"Coal Miner's Daughter" by Loretta Lynn and "Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton are two great autobiographical songs from two ladies who rose from rags to royalty.
Loretta's father was my wife's grandfather's brother. We would go to the family reunion at Jeanie Wiley State Park in Kentucky. She and Brenda(Crystal) would come. They were down to earth. If they did sing it was always gospel. These are the people who make your electricity.
You are going to love the movie. Sissy Spacek, great actress, won an Oscar for her portrayal as Loretta. They don't call Loretta the "Queen Of Country" for nothing. Thanks and God Bless.
One of her younger sisters is a singer too and goes by the stage name of Crystal Gayle. She wasn't as successful as Loretta, but I think you would enjoy listening to her music as well.
Its the real story of her life.. You should defiantly watch the movie "Coal Miners Daughter" Sissy Spacek played Loretta.. and actually sang the songs in the movie.. she NAILED Loretta's expressions and mannerisms..
love you guys. . . I got to see Loretta in Branson @ 20yrs ago. she's the best & Dew was still alive and he walked her on stage. . so cute she would " talk at him" when singing some songs like you ain't woman enough ! she talked to people and brought a couple on stage, it was their anniversary. And she stayed until the very last autograph was signed. . .I lovef every minute . .
And at the top of her career that is why she was always introduced as.....And Now Ladies and Gentleman..."The First Lady of Country Music"....Miss Loretta Lynn.....
Coal miner’s daughter is one of my favorite movies. Ive seen it probably ten times over the years. Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones are amazing. And so is Beverly D’Angelo as Patsy Cline.
There are people that have posted videos of their tours of Loretta's childhood home; here on youtube. Check some of them out sometime; she was telling truth in this song about her very modest lifestyle. Sad to say, but a lot of people these days could be humbled by living even a week of their life as Loretta did growing up. Makes one appreciate what they now have in their life.
I've been to her home place in Bucther holler , even meet her brother Herman . It was very awesome . You need to go check it out Herman owned a grocery store not to far from the home place , sadly Herman passed away a couple years ago.
I love you guys and your reviews. I also live Loretta Lynn i was blessed to see her live in Branson Mo. @20yrs ago and she was so real and down to earth and she stayed outside her theater at her bus after the concert until Every Fan had a chance to meet her and get an autograph ! Shevwas one in a million. . .
I LOVE her. About 4 years ago, my husband surprised me with tickets to see her in concert. When she came on stage, i just burst out crying. I am 55 years old. I remember my mother rocking me when I was little singing me this song. My mom passed away 11 years ago. Thank you for reviewing this. Loretta is one of a kind.
She was from Butcher Holler, KY. She married at the age of 14 to Dolittle aka "Do" Lynn, who pushed her into singing. The movie, Coal Miner's Daughter stars Cissy Spacek (who does her own singing) and Tommy Lee Jones as Do Lynn. Please do watch the movie, you will not be disappointed.
In 1978, I worked at a sports/music arena in Lexington KY. When Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty had a concert there, the entire population of Butcher Holler KY showed up.
Thank you for listening to so much of Loretta Lynn. She was a A hero. To people who are part or Native American. She was something that we could look up to.
Please watch the movie! It’s one of my favorites and the true story of her life and Sissy Spacek won an academy award for her performance in the movie.
This song always floors me for how bittersweet it is. Loretta takes you through all the toil, valor and love that took place in Butcher Hollow. And then she tells you its all gone, nothing left of Butcher Hollow but some fallen down buildings.
Loretta and Dolly one from Kentucy and the other from Tennessee. Both are beautiful storytellers of life in Appalachian America. Both are national treasures!! Crystal Gayle (Loretta's sister) is also an accomplished artist.
Wow - there ain't now better singer than Loretta Lynn. I remember watching her sing this back in the day and then watching the movie about her life. Loretta is genuine lady and in my opinion the greatest country singer of all time. Loretta and Conway Twitty was a great duo and sang many great hits together. Thank ya'll for doing this and the fantastic reaction. I really enjoy watching ya'll doing these reactions! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Loretta Lynn is an iconic singer songwriter who's lyrics told stories about her daily life experiences and things that we all experience she was also best friends with Patsy Cline
Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline use to sing together in the 1960s and then after Patsy's passing, Lorretta did a whole lot of Duets with Conway Twitty. He's another classic country singer. You should check out Conway Twitty singing "It's only make believe" or "'Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man' by Loretta and Conway
Subscriber and regular watcher here and I just want to say I love both ya'll open minds, loving hearts, and enthusiasm. You're my kind of people. You've gotta do Dolly's Coat of Many Colors if you haven't before.
I can really see by your body language how this song affected you both. I’ve heard this song a million times, but seeing others react to the truth of the lyrics is always special.
Omg y’all made me want to rewatch Coal Miner’s Daughter and Sweet Dreams. Shoot I’m gonna watch em both back to back tonight n enjoy the heck outta my night. Thank you for your great content.
I am not what you’d call a huge country music fan, at least not todays country…but I love a singer songwriter..and country music has many amazing singer songwriters .. Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton I think are two of the greats. Honest, raw talent. Self taught, they wrote songs about their lives, their feelings. And those are the best kinds of songs.
A poor environment growing up, but it spawned 2 incredibly talented singers, Loretta Lynn and her sister Crystal Gale. Both of them credit the way they were raised as a part of the reason they became so successful.
This song reminds me so much of my Mother. Her Father was a coal miner. I've heard the stories of raising 6 kids during the great depression, on coal miner's pay.
Loretta Lynn & Dolly Parton are a lot alike. Both were dirt poor. Both write & sing about the love in their family lives that made them feel rich! Both have become very successful & remain very humble to this day! I love Dolly's "Coat Of Many Colors".
I was lucky enough to see her in concert right after she had hip surgery & she sat in a chair the whole concert taking requests. My girls got to go on her bus afterwards & got her autograph. Amazing lady who loved her fans.
It amazes me that Loretta can basically put me in tears in moments. I have over a 1000 metal records/cd's....but they don't make me cry. Loretta was one in a million - her and George Jones are untouchable.
A coal miners daughter, so true. What beautiful person, had the privelage, of meeting MS. LORREETA LYNN, after a concert, such a down to earth person, such a wonderful person. She is recovering from a bad stroke. Still sounds fantastic. God love you LORTETTA.
My respect went through the roof watching y’all react to this. I’m also an Eastern Ky coalminer’s daughter and I’m damn proud of it. My Daddy is a fine and hardworking man, so this song always touches my heart. You guys have a new fan. Sending much love, from A Coalminer’s Daughter. 🖤🖤
She never forgot where she came from, has a replica of that cabin available to tour on her ranch, and still goes back home to the cabin she grew up in.
Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton are both country rags-to-riches story's . They are both incredibly talented singers and songwriters who never forgot where they came from. Loretta Lynn from the hills of Kentucky Dolly Parton from the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. The one big difference is that Dolly brought the mountains with her.😉
I think Shawn might enjoy taking a look at Loretta Lynn's younger sister. Check out Crystal Gayle's "Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue" for the hair and the skin tight pants--oh, and the music too, of course.
Facts!! Any hillbilly family knows about that. Mama worked just as hard as daddy!! We were thankful for everything! Unlike the disrespectful brats we've raised!! Just trying to give em more than we had. We should've kept them good old days of hard work & appreciation!!
