REST IN PEACE LORETTA LYNN. She passed away at her ranch almost a year ago in October, 2022 at age 90. She grew up in the 30s/40s. She got married and started having babies as a teenager...6 kids by age 24. She started singing on stage in 1961. Her dad died before getting a chance to see her on stage. She stayed married to an alcoholic womanizer until he passed away in the 1990s. There was often physical abuse, but not more than she could handle. She's often said there was never a time he would hit her once, that she didn't hit him back twice. She's even knocked a couple of his teeth out. When she'd catch him with another woman, she'd fight her. For all his faults, they really loved each other. He is the one who pushed her into singing professionally, and was her manager for quite a while. She wrote almost every song she recorded, and still has about 3,000 songs she hasn't recorded. Most of her songs are about things she experienced. She teamed up with Conway Twitty and they were one of the hottest duos in country music, winning Entertainer of the Decade in 1979. She never quit working. She had to stop touring after a stroke in 2017, but kept writing and recording songs.She was in the middle of a 5 album deal when she died.

Literally live about 25 mins from Butcher Hollar, and that is a way of life for sure.. The coal mines are few & far between for this generation.. But me growing up, my Dad, Uncles, Grandfather all were coal miners, and couldn't wait to try and stay awake to see our Daddy come through the door, face black covered in coal dust.. One thing is for sure, where we are from, here in our lil corner of the world, which is the Mtns of Southeastern Ky. One thing nobody can deny is just how much incredible talent, and I mean legendary country musician's that are ALL from this area, and that goes bk to the older legends to some of today's biggest & brightest stars, who are ALL from this one stretch of highway in and around that of pretty much the same & surrounding areas of Eastern, Ky. All close enough that u can travel to and from ea area and be anywhere from a cpl miles to an hr drive away at tops.. That stretch of highway on US 23 is called Country Music Highway, and several small Eastern Ky counties that all border and neighbor ea other when traveled you will pass these commemorative highway signs with the artist names listed on them from whatever particular and specific area you are in at that time.. Just for starters off the top of my head, here is a few of the big country music stars who all were born and raised out of these hills here in Southeastern Ky.. It begins with none other than The Queen of Country Music..,Ms. Loretta Lynn! Then you have the likes of Dwight Yoakam, Gary Stewart, Keith Whitley, Billy Ray Cyrus, Ricky Skaggs, Crystal Gayle, The Judds, Tom T. Hall, Patty Loveless, and as far as today goes..., how about imo the top 2 country artist going, especially songwriters and incredibly unique and talented voices in none other than Chris Stapleton and Tyler Childers! Chris Stapleton attended Johnson Central High School, in Johnson County, in the city of Paintsville where he was valedictorian and a captain of the football team! Paintsville is about 15 mins from my house. I grew up playing sports and against his school of Johnson Central, as they were one of our rival schools as a part of the same 15th Region, where we were H.S. basketball foes etc..Lol Then you have Tyler Childers who is from Lawrence County, but wound up attending and graduating H.S. from Paintsville Ky. Which is literally 5 mins from Chris Stapleton's old HS of Johnson Central, as it was located in the city of downtown Paintsville.. Now Chris is older, but still what is the chances that 2 guys from our area not only made it out but are extremely successful and even growing as that of someone more & more famous! But the fact that they ended up going to NOT only just local and rival high schools.. Even more so are the one's that are in the SAME exact county, but even crazier, 2 completely separate high schools, that are just so happening to not only be in just that of the same county, but ALSO the same city, and furthermore the SAME City limits at that!!!!!!! and are very similar but in the SAME City limits!!! Crazy! As a sidenote Sturgill Simpson who is originally from Jackson County, which is not a part of country music Iowa but still the mountains of Southeastern Kentucky, who later moved with his family to Lexington. But that is a crazy list of Legends and talent, and I left out Sundy Best who is a really good country duo with some good songs, and I wish they would have kept going. Made it far enough along to perform at the Grand Ole Opry and so on. Also side note for those that don't understand who The Judds are, and the most famous one at that is Wynonna Judd of course.. That said, things have just been ALL out of whack recently.. Dinosaur & blues man was played in Southeastern Ky for history for the day, as not only without born and raised here, I'm still here and raising my children here as well!!!! Fun fact if you're ever in the area you can actually travel to Butcher Holler, and pull right up to the little cabin home that Loretta Lynn and her family was raised in, there's no admission or fees you can get out and walk right up to it and walk in and check it out.. There is often relatives or some local people that kind of watches over the place, and try to answer any questions if people stop by and check it out.

This is one of the most literal and emotionally honest songs ever written. Loretta Lynn was SO POOR! "In the summer time we didn't have shoes to wear, but in the winter time we'd all get a new pair." That's literal. They could only afford one pair of shoes a year. Once she out grew her shoes, that was it. she had to go barefoot until her family could afford to order another pair.

I grew up with one pair of shoes a year back in the 1950's. Mom would buy shoes/boots (kind of like a work boot I guess) in the fall and I'd roll up a pair of socks to put in the toes when I got them. By the time summer rolled around my toes would be curled under because the shoes were then too short and I couldn't wait to take them off. We were poor but not as poor as Loretta was. This song makes me feel so lucky that we were not that poor. (Funny this was, I didn't know we were poor)

Coat of Many Colors is a heart-breaking song about being poor but growing up with love, similar to Coal Miner's Daughter. Loretta Lynn grew up during the Depression in the 30's and in the worst times would wear old flour sacks as clothing. Yet through all the hardships both Loretta and Dolly turned out to be lovely people and created beautiful art in their songs.

And now you need to see the film Coal Miner's Daughter. Sissy Spacek plays Loretta to a tee, and sings Loretta's songs herself, sounding almost exactly like her. Levon Helm, lead singer of The Band (the group's actual name) plays her daddy incredibly believably. The wonderful actor Tommy Lee Jones plays Doolittle Lynn, her husband (she married at age 13). You have got to see it.

I grew up in the south and my parents enjoyed country music and she was one of the artist that my mother listen to frequently. And you’re right about the time. That’s in the late 60s they are in that clip. I loved her as a child and I still love her today I’m 62 and Larreta I believe is about 89 years old now. She lives in hurricane Hills Tennessee. You can watch the whole video about her home and property she owns as it is haunted. You can find it on RU-vid under Loretta Lynn documentary.All her songs reflect her life experiences and she wrote her own songs as well. There is also a fantastic movie that came out many years ago called the coal miners daughter. Just like everybody is commenting you have to see that movie! This song hits home. I'm Appalachian and my Dad is one of eight siblings. They didn't have running water and used an outhouse until he was a senior in high school. My Papaw, his Dad, worked his tail off on the farm and Mamaw took care of the kids and the house. I have the farm implements that my Papaw's mules pulled in the field. I built a display in the front yard. I've picked up potatoes behind those turning plows and the mules. My Mom is from a very similar family of similar size. My Brother and I never thought we were poor but now that I'm 52 years old myself, I look back on just how hard Dad and Mom worked to get the things my Brother and I had and remember just how little was left for Mom and Dad. They were poor so their kids wouldn't be.

People of a certain age don’t have enough reference points to something that happened a long time ago. My parents lived through the depression as teens. I remember them telling me they used to eat dandelions. I remember Dad never wanted to throw any food out even after it was bad. These guys are great people but they just don’t have the experience to know stuff like that. So they don’t catch the whole meaning and think of it in their own terms. For instance when they were talking about Loretta not wearing shoes in the summer, they were enthusiastic. I don’t think they understood that it wasn’t by choice. They had no shoes. They had worn out and they had to wait until basically school to get a new pair. They also didn’t catch her singing about how that was a burden on the family financially to pay for them.
@SweetThing

@@diceportz7107 Loretta had a very sad, poor life. She got married at the age of 14 and had 4 kids by the time she was 18. Her husband Doolittle "Doo", promised her father two things: that he would not take Loretta away from home and that he would never physically abuse her. He broke both promises. Loretta had twins later by Doolittle; 6 children in all. Her husband was an alcoholic and he cheated on Loretta; she wrote the song: "You Ain't Woman Enough to take My Man" based on his infidelities. Many a woman has asked her why she stayed with Doo; she just shrugged & said he's all she knew and that she loved him. Loretta had a sad and abusive life; being physically abused by her alcoholic husband, 4 children by age 18 and being taken from home at the age of 14; some say 13. Doo once left her while she was giving birth. Loretta said in her autobiography: "I married Doo when I wasn't but a child; I'm explainin', not excusin'... Doo was a hard worker. But he was an alcoholic, and it affected our marriage all the way through". That's sad. I stand by my statement.

I live about an hour away from Butcher Holler, been there and in Van Lear a few times, not too far from Paintsville, KY. Loretta's brother would take people on a tour of the house she and her siblings grew up in there in Butcher Holler, kind of a mini museum. Many people in this region can relate very much to her song, because we have hoed corn, we have drew well water, our parents and grandparents read by the coal oil lamps (By the way I still have a couple of those lamps) I have helped my great aunt make her own lye soap, churned homemade butter, we butchered our own hogs, and I have heard my grandmother and her siblings (My great aunts and uncles) say more than once, they didn't have much but they all had love for each other. The people never thought of themselves as poor because most of the people all grew up in a similar environment, so nobody really paid any attention to their "social status". My parents are from the same generation as Loretta, so as I said most of us around here can relate to Loretta's up bringing because so many of us grew up in a very similar manner, I guess that is why we all love Loretta so much, she is one of us.
