The lady at the end is Lady Ochiba mother of the heir to the throne. The one one you are referring to is the consort Lady Kiku, who was pillowing with the young guy. Two different people.

@SirHeartbreakertheFirst well, it's a popular theory, but my own OCD had me rewinding, brightening, altering video processing, saturating, desaturating...it's not her. they're already past Clavell's book, so i suppose only a flashback could definitively answer. i would comment further on John and Mariko, but dont want to spoil anything.
