Al and Gina, may want to check in with your local fire department. May be able to get a deal on decommissioned pumps, hoses and nozzles that were designed for fighting forest fires. I have helped put out brush and grass fires, those plastic hoses will melt. The fire department (volunteer) use 2-stroke pumps that can push 500-ft up 50-ft. Use splitters to distribute for multi-person use. I tried those trash pumps, did not work when the time came to put out a fire. I would run once a month to practice. Good for watering the lawn. Also need those fireproof boots as part of your ready to go kit. Think about what you want to protect - house, barn, shop, make sure you have water source to keep the grass wet around the buildings or gravel a barrier. It happens fast when it does. Maybe the local firefighters could give you some tips for prevention and what to do to buy time for them to get to your place.

Al, (thirty year fire officer/inspector here) Get 1”-1”1/2 flat lay forestry line (it weeps to keep from burning) and roll it up. Get as much as you can -like 300’ minimum. I guarantee a fire will move faster than you can relocate the pump and tank! Definitely get an assortment of true brass fire nozzles - don’t skimp on anything! Technically, your lives will depend on all of it…

Great project AL. Check with the Forest Service in your state. Focus on light weight 1 1/2 foresty hose which is perfect for what you need. As far as nozzles in my 40 years as a career firefighter/officer the plastic nozzles again perfect for this application but get straight bore and adjustable. Hopefully you will never need it. Follow you folks along on your many projects on your of grid property

My son is a fire chief. He advised that you get 3 Fire Extinguish ers for the Harvest House, at least 5 for the workshop, and a couple for the barn. Your pump and water tank is great. He also said that most fires start small, and if the Extinguisher is close, you can suppress it quickly. I couldn't remember if you put smoke alarms in, but I was sure you had. Checking with your local fire dept. Is an excellent resource to determine what size and type to get.

Al, I'm a volunteer firefighter, check with your local fire department, sometimes fire departments have fire hose that they can't use anymore,but it's still good hose. Also see if they have a brush line fire nozzle with handle. You might be surprised what they can do to help, after words just make a good decision to that fire department. Your's truly,Andy and God bless the 3 of you.
@mcmanus747
@mcmanus747 29 дней назад
As a retired firefighter, you want a “lay flat” hose you can coil. It will store better for you and save you space. Also, get a fire fighting nozzle as it will handle dirty water better and not clog up. You will want more hose than you think. Having fought several field, woods and brush fires…you’re not going to be able to get as close to the fire as you think because of the heat and your going to need to cross the distance from your pump and tank to where the fire is. Wranglerstar has some good setups you might want to look at.

And use percolating hoses? Those you can run through the fire. And I'd say you seriously need a nozzle that can go from straight stream to umbrella so you can get yourself out of trouble if you get too close to a fire and get cut off.
@stephenadams5293
@stephenadams5293 29 дней назад
Our fire department use to use forestry nozzles when dealing with brush fires, they handle dirty water really well. I would also go with the same hose they use, it Folds flat and can handle the rough terrain. Get floats set up on your strainer to keep it off the bottom. That well keep it from picking up rocks or getting clogged with Debris.
@jbbrown7907
@jbbrown7907 29 дней назад
As a 22 year volunteer firefighter in New Hampshire, I recommend you get both a solid bore nozzle and a spray nozzle. Each has a use. I have copied the Amazon descriptions for both nozzles. Gravity works better than a pump. Gravity along with a pump works best.

Hey guys, real nice video! It was nice to see the trout you stocked! My only advice is to separate your tools by what you need for example vehicle maintenance/repair next all your woodworking tools, then farm chores tools accessories, then gardening, etc. I’m sure you can have common tools used for most all other categories centered around the remaining categories! I hope this makes sense!

Good to have such an instrument on hand. Hopefully nothing ever happens, but if it does, the early response can knock down a fire quickly. I’ve managed to put out two grass fires locally (75 miles west of Dallas Fort Worth. One was about 100 square feet and I knocked it down with a big CO2 bottle. The local volunteer fire fighters showed up just as we were putting out the flames. They soaked it down with water. The other wild land fire was small enough I was able to stomp it out. I still reported it and the fire people came by and soaked it as well. Both times, dry hot summer. Glad you built the emergency gear, Al and Gina. My best wishes that you never need to use it.

I would invest in a couple more totes that you fill and pumps. Build a few trailers and have the totes pump and actual fire hose with connections placed around your property like north south east and west. I would even go as far as building a shed or something close to the enterance to your property with all this stuff inside it. I also like the idea of you contacting the fire dept and having them come out so they can get a feel for what your property is and what your future ideas include.

For the nozzle, get a pistol grip that will adjust to 60- and 30-degree fog as well as straight stream. Also, you should seriously think about a very large tank that is close to the barn and shop and one near the house, so you have enough water to fight a fire. The collapsible hose is fine for the nozzle, you should have sections of it ready to go. We used 2" on the trucks. I remember washing them and racking them back on the trucks after a fire. I was a volunteer fireman.

We had hoses you have to hang to dry, I don't know if you still have to do that. Also, I mentioned in an earlier video you really need an overhead crane system. One in the barn for lifting any animals in case of emergency. One in the shop tho really is kind of a must if you plan on working on the equipment yourself. Any of the roll away machine part lifters, like engine ones, take up a lot of space. You don't want to hurt yourself Al. Ours runs from our largest door to the back wall so we can use it on all sizes of farm equipment. Have a great day.

The idea of a cart for the fire suppression system is vital. A 4-wheel cart with balloon tires that can be quickly towed to anywhere on the property or picked up with pallet forks. Keep the water tank full and the pump primed with the entire system connected and gassed up. When you need it, it needs to be ready. 250 gallons will be gone in a hurry when fighting a fire.

A 4 IBC’s full of water, with the correct hose fitting for the pump fitted would make a lot of sense, you can quickly grab another full IBC if theres a big fire and you can be filling an empty one while still managing a fire. You could drop 2 or three onto your large trailer and be ready for larger fires. Or get a bowser/ tanker trailer. A proper fire nozzle is a necessity.

Wall mounted fire extinguishers are instant ready to go. No pumping, no starting, hooking up, no freezing in winter... Every one of your buildings should have large tank extinguishers. And special types for cooking areas, special for automotive/tractor fires . Check with your fire department, they can recommend local suppliers and the extinguishers need yearly inspection, weighing, checking hoses and valves. Here is a suggestion: Build towers for IBC totes in strategic locations around the farm (House, barn, workshop, and garden) to supply water under a little pressure (depending on the height of the tower). If possible, arrange the tote towers in such a way that the highest tote in elevation will feed its overflow to the next lowest, then to the next lowest, keeping all the totes topped off. You can use the gas pump to fill a tote (truck or trailer) and transfer the water to the tower totes keeping water readily available in case of a fire emergency. Eventually, build a hydrodynamic pump for your creek that will pump water uphill. The hydrodynamic pump uses no electricity and can pump 24 hours a day. Use the hydrodynamic pump to fill the highest tote and allow the overflow to top off the remaining totes. Overflow from the lowest tote can be used to keep a livestock water trough filled with fresh water. Its overflow can be directed to a drainage location.

Good day Al, Gina, and all the Lumnah friends. So many GOOD ideas so far today, ones for the workshop and for your watering setup. I was thinking you could put a semi permanent water intake on your dock, say 2" pvc pipe to hook your intake hose to and leave it in there spring through fall, remove for winter. It would be a quick hookup to fill water tanks to, water new grass, gardens, wash equipment, tractors, cars and trucks and such. I see that H.F. has the 100 foot hose with spray nozzle for the 2" pump, that would cover a lot of ground and a trailer with two or more i.b.c tanks a lot of water to be had. good day to all.

Repeat after me, “ethanol free.” Out of any of the small engines you have, I believe that pump deserves an ethanol free fuel supply. You can buy it canned or from certain gas stations, it would be a wise investment. Aside from periodically test running it, don’t forget to run it dry of fuel. That pump should have a fuel shut off but if not that’s an easy addition to help keep that carb clean. Harbor freight does sell a small trailer that would be a great base platform for a tote and the pump, IF you’re not planning on building a 4x4 go anywhere trailer. I’ve seen another wranglerstar comment referring to the setup he built, he has some great ideas. Good luck with whatever you choose to do Al, safety is paramount, so as always you guys will stay in our prayers. ✌🏼

In finishing your awesome workshop one suggestion would be to put the foundational things in first the add the cabinets & shelving around it. So build your work benches, set your larger equipment that will stay inside the shop so you can visualize the space needed for those things. Example: Welding unit, your automotive equipment like ramps, rolling tool box, creeper rolling unit. Waste bens for scraps of wood ,metal, oil, non reusable stuff like Styrofoam, plastic bags, etc. Once your have to things are in place build your storage units around them. Looks good so far!

Large items are a pain in drawers and bins. Some can just sit on shelves. Others like chains, shackles, hoses, and-so-forth are harder to confine in one place. To mitigate this problem purchase restaurant type sturdy tubs the size of flat shelves. Using them on flat shelves allows you to pull out the tub when needed and the items are always kept as you need them.

I think it's best to keep tools and supplies visible. Clear containers, clear plastic bags for little stuff, hanging everything you can. It won't look the neatest but you will be able to locate what you need and save you money from buying the same items over and over again. Also saves time looking for what you need and time spent running back to town. If you want neat and tidy, you could have all of that in a room or walled off space with doors covering it most of the time.

Personally, I'd put 2 totes on a trailer with the pump setup. Talk to the local firehouse, they can point you in the right direction for nozzles, etc. We've bought equipment from 10-4 here in Florida, they're a fire hydrant/equipment supplier here. Great idea, going proactive, there may not be a response team when you need them..😢😮 Love ya'll ❤

Good morning Lumnah family from a sunny Pacific NW! Good morning viewers. Suggestion; should you have a welding set-up with a tank of gas, have it on a little hand truck for ease of movement. I'm thinking of you building another set-up for a chop saw and other equipment you could roll to the center to use but have a space to place it in storage against a wall. I was thinking you were going to build your own work benches. Of course somewhere have a nice vise! Yes, some part of the workbench could be used for welding and maybe it could be wheeled out from the wall too. I like that water pump you got. That's nice to have a way to pump the water out should you have a fire. Good safety thinking! I hope you can find the parts you need! Great, you did at the local plumbing store. "Ricola!" Funny! I like the hoses. Too bad the green one toasted a little. I like the red firehose! Yay, you remembered the oil. Yum, smoke your own fish! It looks like you've got everything working! It can fill the tote and the tote can supply the firehose! Nice job! It was funny as you came close to Gina and she backed away. It was fun to see the trout in your pond. Thanks for this video Lumnah family!

You need to setup a dry hydrant which will make it easier to fill your tank. Need a smaller hose on the output side. 11/2" hose would make it better to hook up to an inch & a half nozzle for a better reach of the water stream. Just my thoughts, Retired Firefighter over 50 years in the fire service.

I would look at a trailer big enough for two of those totes linked so you get more water, plus a larger tank near the barn and shop plus another near the house. You can never have too much water in a fire and you need it fast. Maybe something like Jason's rain water tank, that black thousand gallon one or even more for the shop area. Good to have a mobile trailer too and keep it full in the summer fire season. Inviting your fire dept out is a great idea and they will have lots of tips you have not thought of. Also they might be willing to park some surplus stuff at your land for faster response to you and your neighbors. Also decommissioned nozzles and hoses since they are required to replace on time schedules not wear and tear. Sometimes really good stuff gets set aside. My dad was a good distance from their firehouse and they put a tanker there on his land for faster response with the stipulation they could fill it from his pond if they needed to. Gave them better coverage and helped dad out as well.

The fire dept did come out and test the tanker every so often so dad had to take a little time every three months or so with them but well worth it.

Couple things, Just get a couple pipe reducers to lower your hose end to 1" and that will be all the nozzle you will need for the money. Second, you should get some fish food and feed the fish to help them grow..

I am building pretty much the same kind of system. I have four totes set up at strategic locations around the yard and two totes will go on an old tandem axle car hauler trailer with the pump. The well will have a permanent suction line for fire trucks to refill, as well as my own system. This may sound a bit overkill, but I'm also going to put a few sprinklers on the fence behind the house and maybe a couple on the roof of the house tied into the sand point system that runs the house water. A few thousand dollars spent to help save $300,000.00 I think is a great investment.

Gina, it is up to the cats to 'lay down the law' to the dog about what boxes he can and cannot chew up. Al, on your discharge end you will want to go down from 2" to 1" for pressure and distance. You may be able to talk to your local fire department and get one of their decommissioned nozzles, or maybe they can point you in the right direction to get one. When the oil runs out the fill hole there is sufficient/full. You do need a longer suction line. 50' comes to mind. Those pumps DO NOT like to be run dry. If the motor will not start after many, many pulls, disconnect the low oil sensor. They go bad on a regular basis. The water pressure will straighten out your lay flat hose.

There are firefighting nozzles that will be much better for firefighting, and you won't go through the water so quickly. I do like how clear the water is in that pond.
@badbertie69
@badbertie69 29 дней назад
You just want a nozzle with smaller diameter ID for greater range water jet. Also consider a combination nozzle that will provide, in addition to a long jet, a water wall to protect you guys from heat and smoke. Avoiding hose kinks is more about practice and technique. A reinforced hose will likely need a reel. Just some ideas.

That's an adorable little demonstrator. Gasoline engines and fire fighting prime movers are a combustible disaster waiting to happen. The pull start feature will serve as comic relief while your shed burns down. Invest in a good telephone that connects wirelessly to a combination LTE/ Iridium Satellite base system or a fast getaway vehicle. That system you bought will give you a false sense of security.

Good Morning! Please contact your nearest fire dept. and let them know what you are doing, and ask them about getting a fire nozzle (forestry nozzle) and hose connection. i Love your fire fighting system. might i suggest putting the tank and pump on a trailer, so all you have to do is back your pickup truck and go with it. GOD' Bless your whole family. Amen :)

Great idea for the homestead! Our volunteer fire department in northern Minnesota use stand pipes set up at different lakes that they can fill tanks at. Fast fill up times, minimum set up times. They use some type of strainer on the inlet and then bury the pipe to a easy point to access their trucks. I'm sure they bury the pipe the pipe deep enough so it doesn't freeze up in the winter and sloped back to the lake for drainage. Just a thought. Love the videos!!!!

I was inspired by watching you tuber Hometime Acres when he went over to show his neighbors shop and garage. He convinced his neighbor to start his one you tube channel. One Eye Custom, Doug is very organized to the point where you’ll be jealous. Compressor and electrical hose reals, handy quick and time savings.

Three things I like for tool organization. To store all those small items left over from projects like special screws, even pencils, the small leftover stuff, I use empty tennis ball containers arranged like stadium seating. The increasing heights of the tubes let me see the white label at the top of the tubes. For hanging things on the wall I use the cheapest osb sheets and 1/2” lathe screws. I easily fashion custom hooks from wire with a small loop on one end that is secured to the wall with the screws. (Much better than peg board - the hooks don’t fall off the board.) And lastly, to save space try to build small shelves out perpendicular from the wall, rather than everything one layer flat on the wall. The experts say to label the places tools go so the tools go back in the same place. Also, tool boxes are good because they reduce rusting as the humidity changes in your shop.
