This was one question I'd have wanted to ask them. Is it a literal gut feeling, like their shared bowel reacting to the anxiety, or is it like a lot of other twins who aren't conjoined but know each other so well that they just "know"?

Not just the digestive tract, they also have a conjoined blood circulation, even if they do have two seperate hearts. I imagine the other one can physically feel it if the other one gets exited and their heartbeat accelerates.

Humans actually have a whole second brain in their guts, with about as many neurons as a cat; it's probably connected to both of them by a branching vagus nerve. So technically they could probably pass messages to each other, if they learned how to speak bowel cat

I'm so horrified by the fact people literally stop and take pictures of them. I'm a wheelchair user so I can fully relate to people staring... But that's just an entirely new level of personal violation. I massively admire their strength. Asking how do they date is actually a really nice question. I'm disabled, spina bifida. and it's often assumed that we couldn't possibly date and have partners, so it's nice to hear someone not just assume they don't.

Omg! It's so interesting to me the way that when Carmen is talking you can see Lupita sort of mimicking the words at the same time and viceversa. They already answered that of course they don't share a brain so is normal to asume that they don't read each other's mind but the fact that they can mimic with their lips what the other is about to say is impresive, that shows that something's happening, maybe a reflex or idk but is really interesting. I wish nothing but a lot of happiness in their lifes.

it's likely not a reflex; their spines split at the torso. any nerves that are responsible for mouth movements and cognition wouldn't be that far down. if anything, they had been prepped for the questions beforehand (as a lot of these types of interviews go) and possibly had the general answer written out already. i can only speculate about what they were thinking, but their nerves wouldn't be connected that far up

I know this should be "normal" but I am really touched by how considerate and thoughtful all these people were in asking their questions. Everyone was really careful to not overstep boundaries and showed actual interest in the two girls and not just in their body/bodies. Love this video. Really wholesome and calming. @@surfinsocal100 The thing is, you just _know_ that there are different thoughts in their minds and as a Dutch person, I feel *highly* uncomfortable with people saying other things that they are thinking or that they mean. The "pretentious" politeness makes me very anxious, it feels like someone is giving me too much space in a train and then sits uncomfortably in the corner, youknow? If I were to say; 'Ask me anything' I wouldn't be surprised if people went; 'What about masturbation, having sex with bedpartners, what about phonecalls that are loud, what about songpreferences and what about underwear-choices or tampon-choices if both have to agree and feel comfortable?' I mean, sure, that would be upfront, but 'ask me anything' means anything and "Ask me some polite stuff' means 'ask me some polite stuff.' Just like; 'Give me your feedback on my artwork' means 'give me your feedback on my artwork' and 'What do you think? (with a proud face) means that they want compliments. If I got a euro for every crying American teen that called me a mean girl for telling her that one of the eyes on her painting needed correcting, I would be able to pay for some pretty big subway sandwiches. Say. What. You. Mean.

@@Widdekuu91 I’m sure those questions were in the back of their heads as well but also many other questions that’s are more comfortable to answer in a weird video setting like this. If it was a podcast style video and they wanted to answer those questions it would be done just fine. Just because you are able to ask incredibly invasive questions doesn’t mean you should unless someone makes it clear it’s okay. Also I mean it’s hard to really fault children and teens on how the re act to certain situations. When I was younger and even today if somebody I admire or is older than me gave me a correction on some things it was hard for me not to cry even if I wasn’t that upset 😂 parents don’t teach kids how to emotionally regulate themselves and other things that we learn to do when we are older.

What a great interview, I respected them so much. Also, big admiration for their parents; they could say: “no for us”; but they decided to raise these awesome ladies, they are in college, one have a partner, tik tok, friends… To me this is an example that even if the world treat you bad, bully and sucks, if you are surrounded by people that love you, care and protect you, you will go through all of it, it won’t be easy but you are not alone.

The fact that they share the same intestinal tract is very interesting from a physiological perspective. Our gut and also our gut microbiome is actually heavily involved in our feelings and behaviour so even though they have two separate brains, their feelings are probably highly interconnected.

@@DrZudsi It's more about the fact that their shared endocrine system (those areas where messenger substances are produced) interconnects with their separate nervous systems and brains. So, to a certain extent, their chemical basis for emotions is the same, but since brains are such complex and individual structures, it probably won't have too much of an impact on their individual emotional reactions. However, nothing of that is as fascinating and beautiful as these two wonderful human beings in all their complexity.

@@eklectiktoni (no one asked, but) I have a twin, and my twin and i have the same personality, hobby, and dream job (but only a few) and my twin and i has a special connection which is being able to understand each other and also the same disease (which is our mental health, and a heart condition, but my sister already got her surgery 5 years ago, and shes getting another surgery in 3 years, while i dont cause mine is not that bad) :)

It strengthens the connections in our brains and keeps our thinking versatile. They’re also very stressful and I hate them, so 🤷🏼‍♂️

Agreed. No matter what, they are stuck together forever. They both have to work the same job, the same tasks, and the same outcomes together, so they should be treated as a team entity. Of course in the real world, the other twin would still need to have a certain level of competency, but they would clearly combine their me tal faculties when problem solviing at their job.

I think there is a point where this can become like toxic positivity, though. I am disabled and only through acceptance of being disabled have I learned to love myself, advocate for my needs and accomdations. It is not shameful to be disabled and I feel proud of myself and empowered. I cannot do things easily that other people can, and ignoring that isn’t going to help me live better, but harder. Disability isn’t a dirty word - it can help us define what is necessary to give others equal access. Sure, “nobody is normal,” but disabled folks/neurodivergent folks do need accomdations & that’s OK too. (Ex. Hard of hearing folks needing captions, etc.)

They have two separate brains, so they can't "read each others minds" at all. But they spend time together literally 24/7 and at some point you'll just get used to how the other one phrases things. Lupita mouthed her height when Carmen said her height, not because they can read each others minds, but because Lupita obviously knows her height and knew, logically, that that was what Carmen was gonna say. This happens between parents and kids as well, when the kids are saying something to someone, which the parent know exactly what is, you'll catch them mouthing the exact words. It's a question of familiarity, rather than mind reading.

The way that you are framing it would more be classified as an impairment. Disability, especially in the social model of disability, is framed more as societal attitudes and environments that disable someone/people, as opposed to their different physical abilities. Hope that makes sense :)

I wish they would've elaborated on what term they would rather use. My sister has mental disabilities and although I believe she's capable of doing whatever she sets her mind to, I would still consider her disabled as she might need special accommodations in order to succeed. Not in a negative way, it's just a fact and I'm really grateful as it's the reason she's able to better experience life. I'm just curious as how they would've described that.

Like if one of you needs to take a medication for something that’s individual and doesn’t affect the other (depression, anxiety, etc), would you both end up absorbing the medicine since you have shared organs? My best guess, as a pharmacist, is that for the majority of medications, they would take the standard dose meant for one person. Standard drug dosages are determined based on the average person's body weight and metabolic capability. Given that they have one liver and two kidneys, and their combined body weight is still within the range of a single person, the standard dose would likely be sufficient. For meds targeting specific organs in the torso and upward which they have two of (heart, brain, etc.) it's possible that they would need a higher dose than usual since there are twice as many receptor sites needing to be occupied by the drug... but doubling the drug would also mean increasing the risk of side effects and toxicity to other parts of the body, so I think it's pretty rare that they would choose to do this.

As an RN of 28 yrs, who took the pharmacology class for fun before it was required as part of our degree, the answer is yes. They share the same digestive system and circulatory system. Therefore, since the meds are broken down in the stomach (usually), and taken up into the bloodstream from there, they will both feel the effects of the medicine. Medications go to certain receptors in the brain, so if only one twin were anxious and the other one didn't need that particular medication, then the side effects would be more pronounced. She would be extremely drowsy, for example, because those receptors in her brain don't have a need for that medication. That is the best way I can describe it in Layman's terms. They would have to find a medication that wouldn't adversely effect the twin not suffering from anxiety/depression, and probably start at a lower dose to see how they both react to it.

Apart from the psychological side, the only biological explanation I have is that their receptor regulation is differently. We're talking epigenetics and different absorption & metabolics. Kinda like how different people can have a different uptake when taking medication. Besides hormone regulation is a lot of feedback loops between endocrine organs & the brain, considering they have their own brain, they'll most likely have a different regulation.
