As a guitar player with over 30 years experience now switching to piano, the reason is because the piano is the most practical musical tool compared to all others in my opinion.

Can we even apply the word "hubris" to a jazz pianist? I mean, when you really can achieve anything you take on at a high level, is it even possible to have self-confidence that's excessive or unwarranted? I don't think so. A word of caution for Adam, though. If you wear your Clark Kent glasses while displaying your powers as Superjazzpianoman, their value as a disguise will be compromised. Love this episode! Many parts of this video describe the divide between classical music and jazz piano with the unintended emphasis on how difficult it is for any classical pianist to cross the boundary (and for new students to learn jazz)

The title is true though. If you have ears (remember listening is the most important thing!) and if you practice for enough years you can basically do anything. Try to convince me otherwise.

Take any Bach 3 or 4 voice piece, or something from Scriabin, and try to play it through. Not feeling so invincible anymore.

You don't need much technical playing ability in order for music making to be a spiritual practice. Therefore, I don't believe selling lessons has to conflict with that - the spiritual side of music doesn't get stamped out just because of taking paid lessons. To help that stay true, maybe you could tailor some lessons to people who approach music that way, and maybe even intro classes for people who don't approach music that way yet. I suspect you probably already do anyway. I think that should be part of any improvisational music curriculum, just like learning to solo over standard forms. I don't know a pedagogy for that, and I don’t know whether you can teach that online. I think these types of discussions during the podcast can help open people's minds to the possibility. IMO, it's not so hard to crankstart that motor, and some words from an authority (yes you guys are, whether you believe it or not🤣) can be enough, sometimes. Maybe not most of the time, for everyone, but sometimes. So please, keep it up! (Internet disclaimer: no, I'm not being sarcastic. Sometimes I troll, but not THAT much🤪)

Music has nothing to do with spirituality, people who attribute talent and hard work to things like god, or having a "soul", or being spiritual as a condition for "channelling" art, are as delusional as anyone that talks to "god" and thinks that you should worship things that don't even exist nor show their "face" to anybody, let alone Jon Batiste. I cringe when I have to "swallow" that Coltrane and McCoy and Mehldau all believe in this kind of idiocies.
