And then came the 2 cylinder JD. One small step up and push the hand clutch to move ahead. I grew up on the farm, but sometimes would hire out as a teenager. Had a neighbor who would get a few of us for rock picking. We had great times, even though it was tough to get out of bed the next day with all of the sore muscles knowing you had to do the same thing all over again.

I am a arborist, I spend my day hanging from a rope using a chainsaw up a tree but yet farming is so dangerous it makes me nervous, see farmers in bins and auger right next to their feet makes me have sweaty palms. 😬😬🤞🏻

I've done both. Kind of a toss up in my opinion. Both very dangerous. I'm thankful that I survived both without serious injury.

The auger is off and wouldn't be turned on...unless, ya know, someone pushed the wrong button (lockout-tagout? On a farm?! LMAO pls). The much scarier part is the holes in the floor you can only kinda sorta see. All those dips in the corn? There's a hole there with a very strong chain and paddle arrangement that would tear your lower leg clean off and not even notice. He dances around those because while the auger was off, those paddles very much were moving.

Just a quick search for Workers comp. insurance rates for employers. Pruning/logging looks to be 2-3 times higher than row crop farming. Not to say that is necessarily an accurate indicator of which is more dangerous.

Did tree work for a month. One our crew members got super effed up when a 5 meter 40" oak bounced off another bucked piece on the ground and broke his jaw. (Ground line got pulled the wrong way). I was done after that. Not worth 13.00 an hour to me.

When I was 18 I worked for a farmer who had a theory that rocks must breed. He figured it was the only thing that made sense. Pick them all and next year the field is full of rocks again.

You really only need the threads at the pitch diameter anyways. You can take to top of the threads off no problem!

For people who don't know, that area is full of Canadian top soil and rocks (thanks, Canada!) that was bulldozed south by glaciers during the last ice age. The glaciers melted leaving the rocks scattered around in the nice, rich soil and like Zach said they get raised up to the surface by frost heave and tillage.

@@tylerbrown2817 Around 10,000-12,000 years ago for the majority of Minnesota. Really most of the Upper Midwest was covered by ice at some point but it varies where you’re at. Where I’m at in Iowa we haven’t had glaciers for at least 100,000 years as an example.

Those aren’t rocks! Dad blew some out of the field that was bigger than than rock picker. Blew as in dynamite 🧨. One had fifty sticks and I was the one picking up the pieces of granite for days.

When I was a kid, my brother and I would pick rocks on our uncle's farm. He took the rack off a hay wagon, put some wide boards on the frame and take us out into the field. After it was loaded with rocks, he would pull the wagon onto the rock pile, where we would push or throw enough rocks off until we could move the boards and let the rest of the rocks fall off between them.

Zach I’m guessing your family is from Småland in Sweden, so you can add a couple of hundred of years of rock picking. Småland is one of those hopelessly rocky places (one of the reasons people left for the states).
