Thank you Melissa for your input. Great advice. Many years ago, I enforced the permits while film companies filmed on location in L.A. You covered some great points about insurances and adding certain language in the agreement with the company. Your video was helpful, as I am now advising one of my daughters about the possibility of renting her commercial property in another state. If you haven't done so, a short video 'after' the shoot might be helpful and what you may have learned when the film company left your place. Thank you.
Jan From NYC Saves Money! Thank you so much, Jan! We just got notice of an additional shoot day. This means another $500 per tenant, and more for us too. It’s a huge blessing. We are so glad. Hope you are well!
Nikki Koz thank you so much! Yes! Assuming the fires don’t displace things, we’re anticipating a 5th (extra) shoot day this week. Everyone is so glad for it! Meanwhile, we’re on day 2 of no school this week due to 🔥 , which is no fun. This is the third round of fires in 3 weeks. Thank you for your well wishes!
This is SO interesting, renting your property as a filming location! Please keep us updated. Sounds like it was a wonderful financial decision for your family too 👍.
@@LynnDenton I don't, I'm afraid. Thankful to say that we earned about one kid's private school tuition from this filming week, though. It was a great blessing from 2019 that's helping us weather 2020. Filming and production is starting to pick back up (we have a neighbor who has a ton of filming at his house, and they just shot a Panda Express commercial there last month...), but it's definitely not where it was at, pre-pandemic. Anyone who has the option to shoot outside the US (in better managed countries like Canada) is basically doing so, at least in the circles that we talk with. Hoping to get our house listed this winter for some "primary residence" filming in the new year. Obviously, if we take on the risk, we hope it will be for a production that makes the effort worth the impact on our family. Fingers crossed! Thank you so much for watching! Melissa
How exciting! I checked out the film info, a crime thriller staring Denzel Washington..it should be a good movie..(.I love a good thriller...love watching 48 Hours and Dateline...real life is almost surreal when it comes to murder)....what fun for you to have a part in it AND make money as well. I think it's great. As for what I'd spend it on: depends...I'm a saver so would probably save it unless there was a specific upcoming special trip or a big need like replacing a car...I might save half and spend half. I'm as happy not spending as I am spending b/c so often the thrill of spending is short lived. I know you guys will make a wise decision..you've done a fab job covering all your bases in this endeavor!
I'm so glad you looked up the film! Yes, it has quite the cast and we can't wait to see it when it hits theaters. I loved hearing how you'd spend it. I have a laundry list of big "gotta pay" expenses for next year. I've already earmarked school tuition, and put aside 10K of unexpected income for a big overseas trip next December, so this money might just go into a fund for creating an office off of the garage for my husband or just personal investment savings. I can assure you it won't be frittered away. I look forward to paying for several things we've been putting off until money was available. It's very exciting!! p.s. went to hand off keys to our new tenant yesterday and the strike crew had left behind the paper street signs (new street names) that were pasted over our existing street signs. You'd never know they were paper - they are SO lifelike!! Going to frame them, for sure!
Tanzy Thress thank you! It’s crazy here. More fires in LA today and school closed. Lucky we are out of harms way. Thankfully filming is being extended by another day and all of our tenants are 👍🏼! It’s a huge blessing!
@@MelissaShares So glad fires aren't close to you. Money mom Dawn said one street over from her got hit with tornado. Am sure free rent is great. No wonder cost so much to go to a movie. Not that I go to them.
Wow Melissa! Amazing opportunity for you and your family. Exciting side hustle income and certainly worth all the extra hard work. T-shirt looks good on you, BTW LOL 😊💖
Rose A.L. Lindsay thanks, Lindsay! I thought someone would catch the shirt! This unexpected windfall really takes some pressure off of us. It’s also been a great learning experience!
Melissa Shares yes, a huge blessing! Hopefully it will lead to further bookings. At the start of your video I first thought you were going into Airbnb! 😂 😊💖
Rose A.L. Lindsay I don’t think I have nerves strong enough for air bnb! 😂. Film locations pay way better, then we have tenants in place with long term leases. I think every business venture has a learning curve, and we’re finally getting into our groove as landlords, thank goodness!
this is really awesome and love all the info you give!!! Sounds like a sweet deal for everyone!! I am wondering who in the world it is.... salt n pepa... hmm...Naughty by Nature? They were connected somehow if my 90's memory is correct. How exciting to have this opportunity!
JewishEducationatHome aw! I’m so glad you were willing to venture a guess! If you listened to the song, “What a man!” This man’s “face” is the lead in the movie. Want to try one more guess? He had the apartment as his green room, but honestly, his co-stars are pretty darn impressive too! Last night my husband stopped by to watch some filming and the cars in the movie are great! I’m excited to see it when it comes out! Obviously, also so happy for the unanticipated income and major earnings for our tenants. Everyone got an extra day of filming (unplanned for) this week. No one gave it a second thought. It was an easy yes!
@@MelissaShares That is so awesome!!! Win/win for everyone, and so exciting! I remember shoop, none of your business, and a few others, but I am stumped!
Allie's Best I think you’d like the story especially well, Allie - I was pregnant through the whole ordeal. I’ll see if I can shoot a summary of how we pulled it off. 😘
@@DoodleOnAMotorcycle Thank you! Clearly I'm very behind on my channel! I've gotta get back at it and film the story. We were very lucky, and patient, and took some risks taking on an additional mortgage, just as I was prepping to leave the workforce and become a stay at home mom (something I did not share with our lender) - we closed escrow and had our first baby in the same week! While being a landlord is kind of scary in this economy, so far we are hanging in there and our tenants are making their rents. We are grateful!
Great video! We are in Toronto, Canada, and we have also had 1 major filming event, and 1 tv commercial filmed at our house. I loved it and wanted to promote our house to more location scouts. I have listed it on PEERSPACE, GIGGSTER, & SCOUT SET. I have created my own independent simple website with photos, list of amenities etc., to promote it myself directly without the platforms. Any suggestions on how to promote to the right people/companies? thanks
I've been approached by a major production company to film for 3-4 days in my apartment. They've taken pictures and measurements and I've met one of the producers as well. They've offered $2000. Is that normal?
Hi Rebecca, Filming is WAY down here in LA (it was basically shut down for all of January), but shoots may be picking up where you are, depending on how the Covid infection rate is looking. To start, I would photograph you property with a few nice shots that you take yourself, and then reach out to your local film commission, and maybe try a quick google search to see if there are filming location companies who would list your property (they should list for free, then only take a commission upon booking). If your property is really unique, then that's also a selling point. Interestingly, this month the movie finally comes out that shot at our building in fall of 2019 - it's on HBO Max and is called "The Little Things." I hope you get to check it out!
Great question! Fortuitously they scouted and *found* our property (the benefits of living in LA, near studios). If that hadn't been the case, connecting with your local film commission (especially if you have a unique property that you want to make known), or listing with one of the websites for film locations is a great way to get started. Unfortunately, filming has definitely slowed down since Covid, but I'm heartened to see some friends returning to production (albeit in Canada). Fingers crossed, we'll get through this soon!
@@MelissaShares wow, thanks for sharing! how do you determine how much to charge? You've motivated me to list my home on my local film commission site!
@@DaraAbasute there are some rate calculators out there, that are based off of your mortgage payment, but I think it really depends on the nature of the shoot (exterior vs. whole property, does it require you to relocate, etc.). For us, we were happy with our compensation for preproduction, production days and a couple of cleanup days, and it was a little more complex due to payments to us and our tenants for their trouble. Here's an example of an FAQ about negotiating rates that might help: www.filmlocationswanted.com/how-much-charge-home-filming/
@@MelissaShares what are some examples of film location websites? Other than Peerspace and film commissions, what other market places are available for me to list my space?
