Cal is my 2nd most played rapper behind NF. Thing about Cal that makes him great, similar, yet different from NF, is that he uses humor in a lot of his music to deal with his problems. Talking about his drug use, mental health issues, etc. Even his most upbeat songs have some hidden, dark double meanings. I relate to him in that way, as I too use humor to deal with mental health issues. Cal has some GOOFY ass songs, and some of those are his best, and have his best bars. When/if you listen to more Cal, try to find those moments. Because the goofy isn't always what it appears to be. A perfect example of this is his song "Money Buy Drugs" which in itself can be taken as a completely obscene Eminem-esque shock value, humorous, goofy song. However the reality of the song is him explaining that he used drugs to escape the reality of the world crumbling around him, and in doing so, he's destroying his body and his mind. I feel obligated to say this Kids don't do drugs, drugs are dangerous The brain can change in ways I can't explain But it feel like I'm stuck in a simulation The simulation is a double meaning. He's simultaneously feeling like he's in a simulation because he's on drugs, while also on drugs because the world has made him feel like he's stuck in a simulation. It's wayyyy deeper than people might give him credit for because of the wacky sound attached to it. Would LOVE more Cal!
This song and message is a nearly 100% representation of my mental state. Unstable, I'm hell bent to break, hell bound to head that way, i can hear the sound of the bells as i head that way, wish something would speed it up, maybe a little speed is what i fucking need, I need to exceed a buzz, i wanna see the light this year, i might i fear, fuck this gut feeling, that nothings real and im suffering delirium, spin that Russian roulette, like a wheel if fortune, the appeal is coursing, leave a corpse on the floor for coroner's this morning, either way, no real preferences in how i leave this place, leave a mess, or leave it peacefully, o.d on some benzodiazephines.
I really agree with your appreciation of Johnny Rzeznik, he's a very underrated lyricist. "A Boy Named Goo" is one of my favorite albums from the 90s, every song is great. Cheers, brother!
