I agree that he throws the term around a bit too much but most of his takes here are valid. The most streamed songs of all time are generally very boring which isn’t surprising considering that these songs were made to appeal to as many people as possible. The problem that arises with this goal is that no risks are taken and innovation and experimentation is thrown out of the window which is what you need to actually create something unique and interesting.
@@User9bo do you realize how hard it is to create a generic song "meant for the masses" that gets billions of listens? That means people keep coming back to it. I'm not saying all of them are great songs, but a lot of them are very interesting and have a catch to them, that's why people like them, and that isn't as easy as people may think. Otherwise, why don't many people do this if it is easy and makes money (the most actually try and fail the majority of the time)

Anyone who’s a little experienced with music softwares can make a generic pop song very quickly. What makes it hard to go viral is that you need to be lucky af and need to have the connections and resources to do so.

@Jonathan_Finch oh for sure, I just think it does a disservice to those songs like sweater weather and riptide which blew up without tiktok. Tiktok has a huge sway on music sure but on this list there is less than 5 songs that owe any sort credit to tiktok.

whats funny about riptide is i'm pretty sure it's not even popular on tiktok it's just always been popular for seemingly no reason like i've never heard anyone talk about it or anything yet it has just perpetually been one of the most popular songs on everything since before I can remember
Vance Joy is from Melbourne, so the song was MASSIVE in Australia. From there it blew up in the UK, since they still have pretty close ties with Australia, before finally becoming popular in North America. So it's basically one of those songs by a band that's big in their home country, but is kind of a one hit wonder in the US.

I think outside of the US especially in india growing up, eminem was like the rapper most people loved or even knew. Also linkin park was the peak of modern rock

I get that you don't like some music, artist or bands, but they are at the top for a reason. Me for example, I don't really like Lady Gaga, but I won't say she is a bad singer or anything, it's just that I don't feel her music. In the other hand, I like some Ed Sheeran songs, others meh, but no matter my opinion, he is such a great artist, he has many top songs for a reason, it's not simple coincidence. Another example, I like some Coldplay and JB songs, and some other songs from them are very commercial, but that is no reason to say they are bad artists. They are just what they earned. Same with Imagine Dragons, One Republic, Twenty One Pilots. I do like all of them. But judging them for a couple songs it's just dumb.

I found Imagine Dragons when they just released their first EP and each song had like 2k views. I showed them to my girlfriend at the time and said that this band was going to be huge. She was just whelmed and we moved on. After we broke up later that year, Imagine Dragons had blown up and she posted one of their songs on Facebook and said it was her favorite band. I was so pissed lol.
