The way you can just read sitting on the floor is incredible

I also reread A Little Life two years after I read it for the first time and I can attest to the fact that it made me cry FAR sooner and FAR more than the first time. It's a masterful novel. I'm also ~100 pages away from finishing To Paradise and it's certainly not as harrowing as A Little Life, nor is it really anything like it, but it's very good in its own right.

The fact that you can cry reading a book cannot get through my head. I fell in love with the The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and went on to read a whole bunch of the sequel. 😂 Never cried. I just love how you are just obsessed with books. 😂

I started reading this book bc I saw your original video on it. I have yet to finish the last 100 pages because I can't handle the pain.

We need to talk about straight women appropriating the stories of gay men... as well as abled writers appropriating the lives of the disabled, or Asian-American writers appropriating the lives of black people. Hanya Yanagihara does all three, but it's the gay appropriation that interests me. In the past decade we've seen huge numbers of women (thousands in fact) writing romances about gay men - and A Little Life is merely a slightly more literary version of the now hundreds of so-called "M/M" romances released every year. These are Mills&Boon level romances about gay male characters written almost exclusively by straight women (there's the odd lesbian too) for the entertainment of straight women who find such stories "hot". That is, so long as the romance is all chaste longing, thwarted passion and maybe a little hand-holding and kissing towards the end. Definitely nothing resembling actual sex between men, because, let's be real here, Hanya and Co, find that all a bit icky and confronting. They're certainly not going to write about it, even if they clearly enjoy fantasising about it, albeit between the lines of the overwrought prose. Women who enjoy these books (or the also burgeoning genre of Hallmark-style TV romances about gay men) need to know that actual gay men find all this rather twisted and creepy, not to mention insulting and offensive. These stories (A Little Life included) are about faux-gay men, de-sexualised - neutered, if you like - with the sensibilities of straight women. Nothing about them is real. Nothing. Women like to scoff and sneer at the way straight men get off on lesbian porn (while reducing lesbians to cartoon sex objects), yet here are straight women doing exactly the same with gay men. My point here is not that this is an ethical minefield (although it is); it's really just to call out A Little Life and all those M/M books for what they are: tacky one-handed reads for horny women. So, please, for the love of all things sacred, stop pretending that any of this is literature.

Not to be overly philosophocal, but I love how words can have so much power over us. It's some squiggles on a page that we've attached meaning to, and through that we get attached to people who aren't even real and we laugh and cry and get angry with them. The words aren't real, the people aren't real, but the meaning is, and I love that for us.

12:35 I didn't cry at all when I read this book in 2019. I felt really sad and heartbroken but I didn't cry because I think I was at a point in my life where I was really burnt out and cold. It's been 2 years and I am in a much much better and happier place now and as a result I am scared of a reread. Love you both guys. ❤️❤️

It's been about a year since I've sobbed uncontrollably over by bathroom sink at Dear Comrade and I'm not ready to revisit this book for another 2-4 business years, but I'm sure there will come a time when the experience will have retreated far enough into my brain that I'll wanna read it again. ah yes the woman whose reading vlog i saw last year and started to read this book which wrenched out my entrails reading the same book again, which is gonna convince ME to reread it life's good, peace out

This book is so exploitative of queer people’s experiences. I disliked it so much. Yanagihara made pathetic caricatures out of queer experiences. Her symbolisms only solidified the oppression of queer people. And it’s sad to see, as a queer person, that you’re making an entertainment out of queer people’s struggles. Alarming even if you monetized this video. Capitalizing on your feelings, although valid, on queer oppression and trauma just doesn’t sit well to me. Maybe it’s just me but it’s so depressing to see people loving and trivializing the implications of this book by not discussing how problematic it actually is.

I actually miss her omg so much has happened in my life since we last saw her..
