On this episode we crack open the centre section of an 87 year-old Ford banjo rear end. Unveiling all its dirty secrets.
It’s expected to pull these early axles apart and find a void full of rust and old gear oil that dates back to the late 30’s. We remove all its internals and carefully inspect them. We create a tool to help us remove that stubborn pinion and strike luck when we find another centre section that near perfect. It’s now or never to decide to run a quick change rear end.

great video. I have A model A P/U and I am finding out just how much I don't know about them every day. I grew up in the try-five era and never had too deal with enclosed drive shafts. At 75 years old your videos have most help full. Keep up the good work waiting for more great stuff!!!!

Shiny tubes. I'd be so tempted to leave them unpainted and just seal them so they wouldn't rust. Nice work!

Don't need to remove lock nuts pinion assembly presses out as a unit ,you set preload on new bearings then press assembly back into housing! Press fit!
@bennettscustomsco
@bennettscustomsco 10 месяцев назад
Yes you’re right I just find it easier to remove them in the housing

I had a brass colored wire wheel brush , it was perfect for cleaning rusty gears. And cleaning parts to be polished. I never saw another, i could clean bolts. And it hit my fingers not hurt them. I dont know where it came from what it was, i used it for everything. Never found another. My grand father or dad got it anywher from the 60's maybe before, to the early 80's it would not hurt steel unless you were really trying to. It would be perfect to clean hardened gears. I think its softer than scotchbrite wheels or pads. And it worked better, much better.it was about 5"- 6" and roughly 1.5" wide. I used it unit it was a nub , i could make steel shine like chrome, between it and the huge buffibg wheels and buffing table we built . It had a 1.5hp motor and held 6-8 6"-12" buffing wheels, i got to playing with it. Polished everything, we even did bumpers !

Yuppers, great stuff! I was wondering how you were going to remove the pinion. Vern Tardel has a great bench top remedy and it seems like you discovered a similar solution! Love quick change rears for the astethic and race tradition, but sooo costly these days. Real deal old Culver Citys and the like are becoming unobtanium for us backyard builders and even the dirt track fellars are asking strong money for newer ones. Awesome video. Fantastic! Go Bennetts Customs, keep moving forward!

23:38 that needs candle wax, heat it up until the wax wants to burn then let it cool enough it doesn't burn on contact, let it soak thr threads, then heat it again.try avoiding the wax use large pliers or wet rag to cool the bolt like part. Then heat the nut using the wet rag to shield the rest then apply more wax. It should come apart. Fairly easy (compared to before) some say it doesn't work. I haven't seen when wax didn't and something else did! It seems to seek tight rusty areas soaking in.

In the situation where you fell, use your wrench so you're applying down force, that way, if the wrench slips, you won't fall.

Hi Jordan, I When at Pilates I heard black Betty, that’s a great name for Ben’s car. It’s probably already been suggested but I a can’t recall. Loving these roadster builds.

I don’t think you can get a new 10 spline R&P set so go with a 6 spline. Modify the tube drive shaft. Keep up the cool builds!

That drive assembly represents a large amount of unsprung weight. Good thing this is not a race car.

Nice to be young and able to bounce! (Hope you didn’t hurt yourself to much) and what word did you bleep out before the swear word!. All joking apart if you run a 36-7 rear end what’s the latest date on the front end? 32 would be the date of choice. I watched your QandA on you tube I don’t do any other media. You spoke about later engines as in bens. So would you run a blower on a flat motor or would it be strictly multi carbs. Cheers Tim. (Timo) my x wife’s aunt lives in Brisbane and calls my eldest danno. Youngest scotty. And my daughter Stacey. Take care and all the best.
