I love me some Waylon Jennings. Hard, if not impossible to pick a favorite. The song and the album that started it all for me was "Honky Tonk Heros". I guess I became a Waylon fan and a Billy Joe Shaver all at once. Just like Kenny I loved Waylon's guitar and his unique sound. Kenny Vaughn is so cool as musician and as it turns out, as a story teller. I think Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives are just amazing. Love them live and all their cds. Kenny's cd is really great too. I wish he would cut another one. I hope you have some more Kenny content in store for us Otis.
Guitar wise probably 'Only Daddy...' vocally 'Come With Me ' ... top of my head, ask me tmrwit might be different! Lol... 'Storms Never Last" .... I'm reluctant to say "Just to Satisfy You " in a way because I've hear Hoss say he never cared for it
@@otisgibbs Could you ask Kenny about playing with bassist "The Mighty Harry Bruckner". Curious if he remembers any stories of my late brother in Denver. Thanks.
Dang it, Otis... tell Kenny that you two blew the top off of the scale with this one. "Waylon LOVED Ralph. But I don't think Ralph loved Waylon..." 🤣😂🤣
I know if I see Otis Gibbs, Kenny Vaughan and Waylon Jennings in the same youtube title, I don’t need to see more than 3 seconds of the video before I thumbs up. Stoked for this. Thanks for bringing it to us, Oat!
Thanks so much for these great interviews Otis. Cousin Kenny is so correct when he says when you hear Rainy Day Woman on the radio you just HAVE to crank it up. Ralph Mooney's steel in this song is so good and his outro is on point! When we play Waylon at home my beautiful wife will grab me to dance when Rainy Day Woman comes around!
Kenny Vaughan! What else is there to say, really? (Whether waxing anecdotal, or spicing up a song with his fantastic guitar riffs, he's armed with the talent, savvy, and vibe to make it always sound so damned interesting to listen to.)
"A Couple More Years ". I sang with my acoustic guitar to a young lady who had a crush, but I am always faithful to my wife. Her sweet tears fell like rain, and mine fell a little bit too.
"Wurlitzer Prize" is my favorite right now. Tomorrow it may be "Belle of the Ball," "Dreaming My Dreams," or "Stop the World and Let Me Off." Too many good songs.
As for songs lots of his billy Joe shaver songs are stellar and I love “a long time ago”, lonesome ornery and mean, just to satisfy you and shine. Plus his cover of JJ Cale’s Clyde is a winner. But the beat as Kenny says. That disco country is so fantastic. We are always striving to emulate that groove. Thanks be to Waylon
I saw Waylon when Mooney was in the band and I will never forget it. Musically along with Richie Albright on drums hands down the tightest band I have ever seen.
The strange thing is that nobody ever talks about the beauty and the great songs on his white mansion album, it waz perfect, he brought Jesse and a couple of boys from the Ozark mountain daredevils, I love every song on the entire album, I have my copy still unopened and my parents vynal cut that me and my friends from school played to death , thanks for the channel , it's my kind of youtube
"Waylon loved Ralph. I don't think Ralph loved Waylon?". Another cool observation, from Cousin Kenny.😆 1 more, while I'm at it, "who's this guy & why is he playing, like that?". I could listen to him tell stories, all day & night. Another goodn', Otis.
Keep the Waylon stuff coming, Otis. And milk Kenny for all you can get! He's chalk full of stories. Some Marty Stuart stories would be amazing. I had RS Field produce one of my records. He'd be another amazing guest. He hired Kenny to play on that record and he was unreal. He snapped at snapped at the engineer (my friend, Jack) at one point telling him, "The boss (me) wants Flatts and Scruggs, not Rascal Flatts." Holy shit, I came out of my chair laughing. There are still some legends walking around Nashville and it's wonderful just to be in the same room with them.
I saw Waylon twice in concert both shows we're amazing at the Grizzly Rose in Denver Colorado. I still have the concert t shirt waymore blues part two t shirt this is your brain on music. I loved to hear his Telecaster guitar run through all his songs. I remember my Dad first told me about him in about 1974 . I miss Waylon. But his music will always be played where ever I go.
Favorite song I've gotta go back to Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way. I still set up straighter and crank it after the 1st 2 strums of the Telecaster.
Kenny Vaughn is one of the most underrated guitarist of our time. He has played with several big name acts. His style is original rock star and just cool as shit.
I heard a lot of those Mooney leads were his before he joined Waylon. He must’ve liked him well enough to reinvest his licks onto the new songs. Thank goodness! Something about that pedal steel
Loved that story! Wow! Thanks. I’d say my favorite Waylon penned song is “Bob Wills is Still the King” and my favorite cover he did is “Jack of Diamonds” off the Are you Ready for the Country record!
Favorite Waylon song is tough, I'll just go with I've Always Been Crazy. I read once, don't know if it's true but it's funny. That Waylon looked over at Mooney and he was passed out on his steel. Waylon said the Moon has set.
Kenny's right; Ralph Mooney was fantastic, and a lot of people in Nashville thought so, too. For a showcase of his Moon's playing, just get the expanded version of "Waylon Live." Ol' Waylon gives him the spotlight several times on that record, and Moon runs with it, hard.
That was great Ottis! Met a guy who opened for Waylon around that same time Kenny referred to said Waylon was pretty edgy to say the least back then.Clyde is one of my favourites thanks Ottis and Kenny
I was fortunate to see Waylon at The Bottom Line in NYC. I have to admit..I went there to see the opening act, Pure Prairie League. But then... Waylon came out ! When Waylon's band kicked in...and Waylon started singin'...It felt like I was hit in the face with a brick !
I love to hear stories about ol’ Hoss. Lonesome Onry and Mean has to be my favorite Waylon tune, but there isn’t one I don’t like. Love that sound of him and Ralph playing together. Pick it Moon!
Asking me that question is the same as what's me favorite Skynyrd song . I Love All Of Them ! I'm greedy like that . Thank you Otis , please don't stop !!!
Otis....I really enjoy your interviews and Kenny Tales are great to hear. I bet he has a million to share. One of you should just write a book of road warrior fables with a warning/claim that starts off like,The Twighlight Zone, to maybe keep yall from getting in trouble with the people being "lied about", but true stories are actually leaked to the wanting fans. Great Channel and thanks for sharing with said wanting fan... 👍 Kenney has a funny way to extrapolate his adventures and I really enjoy your inputs as well.....Thanks again and see yall further down the road....👍👍👍
I’d risk my life to see Waylon. Only one of my country hero’s I’ve never seen. But I love Ralph Mooney. He’s just the best. He’s my favorite steel player. Thanks for sharing
I've got a dozen or more favorite songs but Ralph put Waylon over the top, as far as I'm concerned. I had the opportunity to see/hear Moon not long before he died and you'd never make me believe that he wasn't pretty damned humble for the part he played in country music. Maybe he didn't give a damn what anyone thought but he seemed to me to be very honest as far as where he fit into the hierarchy of steel players. He considered himself to be "hillbilly" but if you listen to 'MacArthur's Park' that was the later version, he was unbelievable. The tone he got on songs like 'Couple more Years' live in Stockholm and if that doesn't grab you, I don't know what to tell you.
interesting comment about Waylon playing Ralph Mooney licks on the tele. One of my favourite W Jennings records is "Donna On My Mind" (1970), which pre-dates Rainy Day Woman but has the same lick. I remember asking the steel player in our band if he could cop the steel lick from "Donna". After a couple of listens, to our mutual surprise we discovered that it was actually being played on a tele - copied no doubt by Waylon from Mooney's work on the original recording of the song, which Wynn Stewart put out in 1962.
FIrst off anytime you have Cousin Kenny Vaughn telling stories it is going to be a great day. I really have to say I like "Rose in Paradise" best although just about anything Waylon did that was a Billy Joe Shaver song was great. "Trouble Man" is hard to beat too, you don't hear it on the radio and lots of people don't seem to like it but I do.
Old Timer(the song) from the Waymores Blues Part II album. I actually get request to sing that one at jam sessions. Most artistic and least comercial song Waylon did
Favorite waylon song , the conversation with hank jr , old school , i saw waylon in a small maybe 30 pepole show in wendover nevada , waylon was maybe 3 ft from me and my girl , my girl was really diggin ol hoss , i just gave him a thumbs up i was in a cast from a rodeo wreck in wym , utah johnny .
Waylon Jennings - Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Out of Hand. It was only on his second or third album but that soon into the Outlaw Movement and it was taking the USA, I mean the Eagles got on Pop Radio at the time with what would now be called country before the Hotel California Album, as did a few others I could mention from the 1970's doing a southern country rock sound of the era that today would be country.
To try to choose a favorite Waylon song is impossible. I listened to Waylon almost exclusively for several years , back in the late 70s and early 80s. I cried when he died.
Man, Otis - I can listen to Kenny for HOURS! That was way too short but loads of fun + funny. My favorite Waylon song will always be “The Only Daddy That’ll Walk The Line”. That & all the tracks on the mostly Billy Joe Shaver-penned album Honky Tonk Heroes. As always, thanks Otis.
Hey Otis. New fan/new subscriber/lifelong Midwesterner. Just wanted to say thanks a ton for all this great content. Truly incredible, so whenever you get the time - Keep pumping these videos out! Thanks again!
My favorite Merle songs were with Ralph Mooney. If I'm not mistaken: "Emptiest Arms in the World", "Bottle Let Me Down", and "Swingin' Doors". I take it that Ralph moved from West Coast to Nashville?
That four on the floor thing - Waylon made country funky. Ralph was his own continent. SFAIK, Mooney used four pedals. Three of those had one pull each and the other two pulls. G# to A ( twice ), E to F# and B to C#. That's it. People sell "player" lesson sets. You pay more for the Ralph ones.
*My favorite Waylon song is probably "Slow Rollin' Low". Billy Joe and him were a powerful team and really still haven't got the kudos they deserve as a soulful musical pair (hopefully now they have been reunited once again).* *Kenny is one of REAL connections to the outlaw world and there seem to be fewer and fewer of those every couple of months now, sadly. It is very nice of him to be so outgoing with his stories as he has been in all these insightful videos with him. He tells it like it is too, unfiltered and correct (talking about 80's Waylon not giving a shit about being musically sound anymore and how it's not all so rosy sometimes.* These vids are great. Really love the Waylon, Johnny, Jerry Reed, and Billy Joe stuff from the autobiographies and these sit-downs in particular, always learn something new about the old legends. Thanks again Otis!
Always the best way to start my day checking out your vodcast. Love Kenny stories. Hope your back on the road playing soon Otis but please don't stop producing these for your fans ..thanks. Rbh
